A nice little insight onto an often overlooked little engine. Apparently the severn Valley's boiler crisis was due to water treatment which tackled the scaling that often comes with steam engines. Unfortunately this turned out to work too well as it royally cleared the scale out from the nooks and crannies of the boilers where the scale had in turn sealed the boilers up. Take that away and you have a fleet of engines that were leaking like cifs...!

I understood it was due to a lack of water treatment, and that reverse-osmosis treatment had sorted the problems?

I never expected you to cover this loco, but I'm glad you did! I love pre grouping GWR amalgamated stuff, particularly some of the Cambrian Railway engines, and the Barry Railway K class.

I saw that Port Talbot Saddle Tank Engine in action at the East Lancashire Railway last summer, and I even rode behind her from Rawtenstall to Bury Bolton Street and back. What a magnificent locomotive! :)

Great video. How about this engine running with a few coaches on the last main bit of Port Talbot line from Tondu to Port Talbot, a bit of a trip round the steel works and back to Tondu.

Goodness... fair play to that loco! Do we know which areas on her remained unpainted in 2000 exactly? That 'lone wolf' running bit of trivia's most intriguing it's tricky not to be carried away about matters of detail like that, see!

Chris, if you're considering another 'Gauge the Issue' video, it would be worth it to talk about the shortcomings of the preservation policy applied to when steam was still an everyday sight, and how these brought about a relative lack of comprehensive variety in what we see today in terms of representation, in comparison with the traction engine and vintage car sectors. I personally have found it a very interesting and relatively overlooked subject matter.

Looking forward to seeing this one running at the Bluebell next month - A loco I've always loved since first being made aware of it, but one that I've yet to see running. On another note, and this is probably/definitely the wrong place to ask this, but have you consider the possibility of doing some more TTNS, as having just watched this (player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/watch-coaminum-1934-online) I was prompted to watch a couple TTNS episodes again.
