The rods were still forged to be technically correct. Just a big billet was forged to give steel up to the job then the rods were cut from this instead of taking steel and forging it into the shape of each rod. That waterjet job still wouldn't have been cheap or indeed fast at that thickness and with that material. Based on experience operating them probably a good day or more solid running the jet. But this does save time machining later as there's none of that nasty heat effected stuff to get through that you'd see with oxy cutting them and a relatively kind surface to attack in terms of how it will impact your milling bits and how fast you can work. Waterjets are a pain in the behind to keep going, just remember this before you get tempted by one

This will definitely be one of the most unexpected episodes in my opinion and a brilliant steam locomotive to cover. but I'm also surprised that Chris didn't mention that technically now we have three fourths of the big four rally companies covered in brand new standard gauge running steam locomotives. The only thing we need is to get the Patriots going and we got a quartet! Let's hope that this engine continues running for many many years

Well done to the people at the Bluebell who brought Beachly Head back to life! It's absolutely amazing to see these new build projects come to a head. At least you Brits seem to be well-organised in this regard, unlike us Australians who these days can't even get enough funds and manpower to get our West Australian steam locos onto the mainline let alone build a new one from scratch.

Cracking looking loco and BR black really suits it. Great video. Also great to see some people with their heads out of the window. Some railways (notably NYMR) are looking to close this down, partly due to whitby running. It'll be a great shame if they do. Possibly an item for gauge the issue and something for heritage railway enthusiasts to be aware of and opposed to...

After the Brighton line was electrified, they often hauled the London - Newhaven boat trains. Even though the Newhaven line was electrified eventually, and the three Class 70 Bulleid/Raworth electrics were put on the duty. But often the H2's especially were still used on heavy Newhaven line duty.

Such an interesting story, even if the UK has their fair share of new build locomotives, theyre still big news. Especially for someone like me from a place that doesnt really get stuff like new builds, or see locomotives larger than a small tender engine operating much. We also dont have much in the name of Atlantics arond my whereabouts in Denmark. We only ever had 1 Atlantic type class, the DSB P-class. Our P class locomotives were built around the same time as these Brighton Atlantics, but are very different in styling. And while 2 are in preservation, 3 if we count the Rebuilt Pr 908 which was rebuilt into a low axleweight pacific in the 1940's, neither one have been under steam since the 1986. The Danish national railway museum seems to have plans for using one of the P class, 917, as an operational locomotive in the future while its sister, 931, will remain on static display in original condition. Either way Atlantics might actually be a pretty good fit for heritage operations on larger heritage lines or mainline runs. Theyre decently powerful and fast allowing them to squeeze into modern timetables, a bit more fuel economical than larger designs, yet still capable of pulling a decently sized train. For a place like the Bluebell, it seems like an ideal match.

Hey there CEG. Good to see you're still kicking. Loving the hair these days man. So here's my ask. How about heading up a campaign for a plastic scale model of the Beachy Head in 1/32 or 1/35 scale? I've kept all my modelling gear for years, waiting for a decent kit of a classic UK steam loco to come out. I don't wan't a train set. Just a detailed accurate kit to build, paint and commune with. Then sit on a shelf looking pretty. An Atlantic would be perfect. Please take up this cause Chris. No other bugger is.

What a marvellous video! I saw Beachy Head at the Bluebell's Branch Line Gala in May, just before she steamed for the first time - even sat in the workshops it looked amazing! One question - any reason why its a replica of an existing member of the class, rather than a 'next in the class' like Lady of Legend or Tornado? Is it because Beachy Head uses parts from the original 32424, and/or legacy/original parts in general? :)

I'm an LNER fan through and through; I make no bones about this. And yet, I have to say that the Brighton Atlantics like "Beachy Head" here? They just look RIGHT as the archetypal 'Edwardian express passenger locomotive', in a way that not even the Ivatt GNR Atlantics can manage.

@@TheBlueEM2 How about, for something completely different, they could build a new LSWR H16 4-6-2T? They were basically tank engine versions of the S15 class, which has many survivors, so they could just take one of the preserved members. What's more, most of the parts, including the boiler and motion, are basically already there, and AFAIK no British 4-6-2T's survive, so this would be a good idea for a new-build. They are also quite powerful and versatile, so heritage lines could make good use of it.

She fits the bluebell so well, it's been decades in the making of the need for this size of engine being needed at the bluebell so it makes sense. she's just the right size for the work, not too small, not too large, and most of all she's Brighton.
