Great overview and awesome Idea for a channel. I've been solo board gaming for about 7 years now, and that community has flourished over the years and is a bit saturated. I've recently started exploring gamebooks, and self GM'ing games such as Mork Borg and several other OSRs. I recently purchased Destiny Quest, Fabled Lands, And Blood Sword, the first books. I recently received Storm Weavers via Kickstarter and love it. Legacy of Dragonholt is another favorite. Im looking forward to additional content and discussions.

Hey there! Thank you for the wonderful comment. It means a lot. I have now had a few mention Mork Borg so I am definitely going to have to put that on my hot list to purchase, play and review. I too am a fan of OSRs as well. I have a review that I just finished recording. I believe I discussed that in an earlier thread on this video and have since finished the initial recording. I am looking forward to see how that is received. I have had my eye on Legacy of Dragonholt for some time now. I think my fiance would love to play it as she loves narrative titles now that she has experienced the Legendary Kingdoms series. If you like Fabled Lands and Legacy of Dragonholt I HIGHLY recommend the Legendary Kingdoms series. Thank you, so very much, for taking the time to reach out!

This was really a great introduction! I learned so much from this and from your channel in general... Thank you so much! The one (minor) point is that the lowest on the level of complexity I argue would be the old "Choose your own Adventure", "Which Way", and "Twistaplot" (and the like) type of books. "Lone Wolf". "Fighting Fantasy", "Legendary Kingdoms" and what not are the step just above those.

Hi lancercncs1, Thank you for the feedback. I say it quite a bit, but, I really do appreciate it and it does help keep me going. In regards to your "minor point", I have no choice but to capitulate. They were not represented, and do actually stand as the simplest form of complexity, for the solo gamer. Thank you for all of your thoughts, they are greatly valued.

Sort of an in-between category would be something like Barbarian Prince, where you're free to move around the map, but encounters will pop up from a booklet similar to a Choose Your Own Adventure. For a modern take, The Drifter by Ken Kennedy (aka Glowing Turtle) is really fun. He's also working on a sci-fi version called StarDrifter. There's also Doctor Who: Solitaire Story Game by Simon Cogan, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

Hy Rob, sorry for the long delay on my reply here. I think I have seen "The Drifter" before but let it slip from my awareness. I have added it to my favorite list on Drive Through RPG. I will have to pick that up. The Star Drifter version looks really good as well. I have play the Doctor Who Story game. I actually have a huge binder with pages sleeves for all of the content of the first edition. It is a massive work. I was really impressed by its system of generating stories and I loved that your character and contacts could grow. I wanted more. I can see how those would fit neatly around systems like D100 Dungeon and Four Against Darkness and the Gamebook Genre. D100 Dungeon and Four Against Darkness, with their supplements are almost bridging that gap on their own as well with their Choose Your Own Adventure and Hexcrawl Additions. Thank you for the thoughts and the info. I also have a new product to play and review in the way of Drifter! Thank you!

I think I'm somewhere in between the camps of Open Guided and GM emulation. I like simple mechanics and lots of tables to generate the world and events. But I also want a game that's more than just a hack-and-slash dungeon crawl. Four Against Darkness was the first solo game I really got into, but its combat-centric gameplay loop makes it a pretty quick climb to max level, if you're lucky. Plus, each character is pretty much handed to you with very little variation, making most parties feel more or less the same after a while. It's a good game with lots of cool supplements, but not quite what I'm looking for in the long term. With this in mind, I'm attempting to use the world/dungeon generation tables of 4AD in conjunction with the game Cairn and the encounter tables of White Box to hopefully create the solo sandbox game I'm looking for. I think the only big piece I'm missing is a way of generating quests. Caves and ruins filled with monsters and treasure are great, but I want some stakes and a way to make the world feel alive. I have Mythic as a basic prompt generator, but I find sometimes the system can be kind of hit or miss.

imo, the definitive solo rpg kit is TRICUBE TALES and its SOLO RULES. just enough to give the game the structure it needs and yet is totally theater of the mind style player generated play. as far as I'm concerned it basically defines what a solo rpg is.

Hi Jin Choung, I took a quick look at the system and it looks like a pretty simple and straight forward system. For those looking for a quick and easy system that does require a lot of table roles or descriptive situations, this looks like a good fit. I'll keep that one in mind and put it on my list to take a look at. Thank you Jin Choung!

I saw two channels on YT, one guy was doing a dungeon craw like with cards and playing like a board game, I was kind of "meh"... The other used just a d6 to ask yes and no questions and the intensity based on the number, and was generating whole stories based on that! Then it clicked, what if I do a map craw but roll and interpret the story too, so every location and room is relevant and reveal a bit of the world and the story. Boom! Its like I'm trying to DM to someone based mainly on my imagination but using material and rules for an extra oomph!

Hey there Adler. I think that is an excellent idea. Sounds like your throwing room, and moment to moment, conjecture in there as well. That can definitely make for an immersive experience. Sounds like a GREAT time!

Nice over view. I have read several solo games, both rpg, and board, as well as supplements, but have yet to play any of them. As you've indicated, they all seem to scratch different itches. I thought I'd mention that there are digital versions of Fabled Lands, and d100 Dungeon.

Hi Chris! Thank you for the comment. I have seen both of those in pdf. They are definitely a cheaper alternative. If you don't mind the digital medium they also are a great way to quickly navigate the books as it can take some time page flipping for both of those. I personally don't mind but having the pdf available is always a bonus. I need to get more solo/coop board games reviewed. There has been such a push for solo pen and paper lately, from the community, so my focus has been there lately. I am planning on making an announcement for a huge solo/coop boardgame that I should be doing a full series on later this year ( its not out yet ). Thank you again for the positive feedback it helps keep me going!

@@adventuresinsolitaire Those are good points. However, I wasn't clear. There are digital game versions of Fabled Lands and d100 Dungeon that are automated. I don't own them, and they're probably not desired by purists, but they exist on Steam.

Ah gotcha! Yeah I saw one of them online ( fabled lands ). Thats actually how I found out about the 8th book going into publication. A dev in the forums happened to bring that up. Pretty exciting stuff. I can understand what you mean by purist. I try not to go down the purist path as it can really leave me out of some good content, but it is hard to make that leap from book to game. It definitely looks interesting though.
