Your “alien duck” is a Common Snipe, although becoming increasingly less common these days. That crazy noise is made when they dive, they angle their wing feathers such as they vibrate to create the noise, quite rare being a distinct bird sound that’s not vocal. Part of the mating ritual or defence warning it is. They come inland to the uplands in spring/summer to breed. I’m lucky to get quite a few up here in the Yorkshire Dales, it’s my 2nd favourite bird noise after the lapwing. I’d have thought you’d come across them before on dartmoor but maybe the numbers are decreasing 😢 It’s a privilege when you hear one, even knowing what they are they still make a solo camp a bit eerie. Good to see you out again anyhow cocker, all t’best.

Amazing video Trev! As you know, a tor basically means a hill with rocks. In my opinion, the best tors are in Dartmoor. The people in Cornwall and Devon are lucky to have this beautiful moorland, even though those two counties debate about jam and cream. It's nice to hear the birds chirping. Thanks for sharing, take care, Jordan.

On "The search For' this week we search for the famous 'Dartmoor Alien Duck' 🦆🐧🐤....😄... great video as always Trev.... you got a lovely sleep setup there especially the pillow .. I loves my Trekology Auluft 2 ... it stays exactly you put it with that strap around the mat.... on getting down your pack weight try swapping out the roll mat for something lighter ... i recently tried some thin foam insulation the type you might use under a wood floor... its only about 1/8" thick but it did the trick on a recent trip where it got down to 22F / -5C overnight... i couldnt feel any cold coming up through my inflatable mattress, i stayed nice and warm slept great and it only weighed ounces... you might also consider a down quilt for the warmer months Dave outdoors and A Shropshire lad both swear by theirs and they are much lighter than a sleeping bag .... great to see you guys out and about ...ATB Dave Mc
