I was following this drama way back when. Bruce was running a Trinity certificate program, and Trinity disassociated his program. His TEFL certificate has an accrediting organization that Bruce himself set up in Oregon. I would also recommend you check out this link with students IN FRANCE disgruntled about the course they paid Bruce for: isolutions-th.blogspot.com/2008/05/beware-of-any-schools-that-belong-to.html?m=1 Bruce thinks he's waited out those who remember his actions and behavior.

My experience of a large majority of foreigners (especially UK & American ones) is that they have an over inflated opinion of themselves when most do not have any previous teaching experience. One major concern is that a couple of weeks ago I was talking to a teacher (English) working in a junior School in Isaan. He told me it was easy money and thankfully the authorities only looked for any criminal record in Thailand but not in his home country. He stated 'Thank God they didn't check my UK records' ! Made my blood run cold. I must add that I personally know a handful of teachers that are really good and go above and beyond to help their pupils.

this guy is awesome. he got into the business at the right time. EFL teachers come in various shapes and sizes. But many go on to be truly good teachers. Many have found long term careers, marriage, etc. CELTA teachers are by far the best but online courses can be excellent. UKers know how to teach the language. There is a big difference between teaching EFL in HK, China, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. students and cultures are different. This guy is doing what comes to his mind and if he can help others, then great. OTOH, but there are too many unscrupulous. Just do ur homework and enjoy the ride. btw to become a good efl teacher is very difficult. 15 years teaching in asia has proved that to me. teaching econ or math or history is way easier. but the journey for all students beings with learning english so my advice is to give it the respect it deserves. and pay good teachers more!

Enjoyed your interview. As an expat I met many English Language Teachers one became a valued friend an American University Lecturer in English now retired . He taught many years ago in Thailand and was asked by the Thai government to suggest how to improve the level of TEFL instructors , one thing he recommended among many was that they introduce a requirement of at least holding a basic degree in English Language the Thai government decided to introduce just having a degree was adequate to supplement the TEFL course but would review his recommendations should they find it necessary. My friend often commented that some TEFL instructors lacked even basic skills in teaching and would have difficulty in holding a meaningful conversation with a colleague never mind a student, whilst other's shined in their chosen profession and these he encouraged to take on higher degrees and senior posts . Wishing you and yours a very Prosperous New Year

The content in this video is very relatable to me! I got my first ESL job on Dave's ESL to teach in Taiwan back in 2000. Then eventually, got a teaching job in Japan with Nova (which went bankrupt), then eventually went to Thailand. I believe I got the Japan and my initial Thai teaching jobs on Dave's. I taught ESL and Math in Thailand. For me, he hit the nail on the head at around 25:59 with the Escapism. I'm from San Francisco, CA and found myself bored and frustrated with the same old routine. I didn't have anything holding me back and decided to move to Asia. While I have a few regrets, overall my experience teaching and living overseas was invaluable. I did earn a TEFL certificate at a TEFL school in San Francisco. I thought it was a bit pricey at the time - $1600. I agree that there are a lot of characters in the ESL game and Thailand. But I have to say by far, I had the time of my life in Thailand! Everyday was an adventure and met a lot of nice people - Thai and Farang. As a matter of fact, I noticed most farang were very happy in Thailand. My theory was because of the 'sabai sabai' lifestyle that isn't common in other countries and probably because it's much easier to find an attractive significant other. It is also a charming culture. By the way, What about Ajarn.com? You should interview someone from there. I was a member for a while and actually went to a meetup in Bangkok to meet some of the members. It was hilarious to put a face to the username!...LOL. Fun times!!

The problem with teaching/education is that the snobs think only people with education degrees can teach. I was a well known foreign teacher in China and I taught at several large universities in Wuhan and Nanning. I have lived in Thailand before also and could easily teach at university level there, but I m 53 now and I don't want to work in Asia anymore, I just visit as a tourist now. I know plenty of people with all sort of fancy qualifications and they are useless teachers. . You need a lot of experience to teach well, degree or no degree, that is what counts

You need to have a thick skin to work in the ESL business. If you become prominent you will make a lot of enemies. ESL ex pats have threatened to kill each other before and there have been incidents of violence ( mostly in the private sector) A lot of the people who run the "training centres" are criminals and so are recruiters. This is where the hate and violence comes from. People like me who only worked in the public university sector were largely immune from it.

Wait...So he went to China in 1984 at age 20, to study Chinese, and then graduated from university in 1988, when he began working in China. So, did he graduate from the University of Hong Kong? University of Hong Kong is one of the top schools in Asia. This school is competitive with many applicants from Mainland China. The HKU curriculum is taught in English. But then, there are the less-superior schools in Hong Kong among which to choose from, as well. There in no CPD (Continuous Professional Development) in Thailand. Around 6% of teachers in the UK get either demoted or struck off for failing to maintain of improve standards. About 15% of schools in the UK get downgraded after inspections. No such thing occurs in Thailand therefore what very little standards they have decline. I questioned a teacher about this and she said it's our culture, you cannot terminate a teacher if he/she isn't good. They just go to another school. I suggest that you do some research as many of the students learn more from foreigner teachers than Thais. There will always be a generalisation in this subject. @@ben-cl5in I think you're confusing teaching with working in some conversation class boiler room. I have a friend who is the headmaster of an international school in Bangkok. He was the head teacher at an international school in Hong Kong for over 20 years before. He's mid 50's and will look to retire in about 5 years. Which definitely won't be an issue for him. I mean I stayed at his place last time and his rent alone is 120k so I think it's safe to say his package is pretty decent. The teachers that work for him are all on very good money even by international standards. BUT that's because they're proper teachers. People with post graduate qualifications ( PGCE at very least ) in education. Its a profession that they love and take seriously. This has literally nothing to do with the sad sacks that have got a job in some bucket shop because they are supposedly native English speakers and that's enough. I mean it's embarrassing, many of these people can barely speak English themselves and they are now supposed to be able to teach others. The Dave Keegan types ( he's on KZitem so many will know who I mean ) that can't get through a sentence without half a dozen grammatical errors teaching kids. There is, I may guess, its like 20% I'd call the 'dreamers'. This was a bored person, probably in a predictable life who just looked out a window at the rain and decided there must be more to life. They want to see the world, they imagine doing something special with rooms of eager kids. making a difference. 10% of those will become the 10% super-bitter weirdly hostile ones. I actually meet quite a few who aren't really either but just decided they dislike their own countries. They legit believe the USA/Canada/Aus whatever but they believe their own home culture is degenerating, miserable, divisive etc. I think they just like to be left alone, actually they're usually good for teaching English and reliable types - but, don't hassle them much. they want peace and quiet. There is definitely some strange fraction, mentalists, but they are entertaining in a way, in short bursts but they are quasi-narcissistic, lowerIQ but also friendly but also CIA agents who are also Professors but also work for MI7 and not just Black Belts in a secret martial art but special color belts nobody even knows about and so on. Hey, Pete, Man! I have been thinking. I have been thinking about The Great Charlie Rose, and his interviewing style,...and YOU. I loved Charlie Rose's interviewing style. And, I loved his "set", with the black backdrop, and the the simple wooden table, which was not a new table, but a distressed-wood table, in fact. Charlie graduated from Duke, and I know you have said that you loved your time travelling in the USA, and maybe you even visited Duke University. Charlie Rose earned a J.D. from Duke, School of Law, as well. When I say that you have sort of the same interviewing style as Charlie Rose, maybe you still need to study him a bit more. Of course, we all know about the very sorry sexual misconduct allegations which bombed his career....BUT, let's not think of these things here. My only point is that you seem to be steadily developing your own interviewing style. And, my thought was that you might BINGE-WATCH a lot more interviews done by Charlie Rose to enhance your own style. Just watch the Charlie Rose interview in 2012 with Jeff Bezos, in November 2012, while Charlie was wearing such a beautiful silk tie, white shirt, etc. Or, watch the Charlie Rose interview of Bezos in 2000, while Charlie was not wearing a silk tie. You, Pete, have a very nice camera presence. You come across as being honest. And, not only do you have the gift of gab, but you sport a rather broad vocabulary, when you decide to let it be known that you have a vocabulary. You can think on your feet, too, when you want to. You could be tough on your guests, but, like Charlie Rose, you choose not to. Tolerance is Crucial for any successful interview. TOLERANCE, in all its forms, including religious tolerance, gender tolerance, racial tolerance, etc., etc., etc. Let tolerance be the watchword for you, Pete, in all your interviews; And this is why you are a good interviewer, already. Good wishes to you and your family, in 2023, Pete. Sometimes, I envy you, being in Ireland, no doubt. By the Way, Pete: Whatever happened to Maureen FitzSimons of Dublin, do you know?

I didn't know much about Maureen Fitzsimmons but I've just had a deep dive into her life after reading your comment. She was a great actress. She sold her home in Cork in 2012 and lived in Idaho with her family until her death. I've been watching Charlie Rose interview Warren Buffet. I like his style. I'm going to study him more. I'll check out the Jeff Bezos interview too

TEFL teachers in Thailand are a real mixed bag. I think it's a bit more difficult to work without a degree now than years ago so the real dodgy characters are probably going elsewhere to teach. SEA in general though has it's share of dodgy foreigners evading/escaping something at home. Most people here a while have usually met or worked with at least one person with serious criminal charges from their home country.

Who is dumbe enough to teach WITH a degree here? If you are american, a degree costs 400+$ a month in student loans If you are getting paid 30,000 baht and lose 12-15k Then why even bother?

Many words yet say's very little outwith defensive denials. I would not trust this man. Clearly successful enough in giving himself fat jowls but my gut feeling is I don't think he brings much more to the world in so far as making it a better place - without malice but purely for perspective most dogs achieve that betterment of the world just my living. I would not be his friend.

I HAD the degree and teaching qualifications already when I arrived in Thailand. I was not one of the backpackers or pretender tourists that he is talking about. It made NO difference. Same pay and shabby treatment. Teaching English in Thailand is a dog's life and not worth it. As a language graduate, I also taught myself fluent Thai very quickly (and got some extra paid work as a translator). Let me tell you, behind the smiles, Thai society does NOT respect farang English teachers. Period. You are looked down upon. They have a real grudge about having to use a language that "you were just born with." Behind the smiles for the tourist money, it's a heavily xenophobic, racist country.

Interesting interview since I was responsible for hiring and managing ESL at a major International school in Bangkok. My experience with new teaches varied over the years from the backpacker with Bruce's (and other schools)TEFL cert. to highly qualified teachers with Master of Eduction Degrees. Many TEFL cert holders failed to meet our standards until the university required a real college degree in addition to TEFL or some other ESL credentials. My experience is not recent and my comments only reflect my personal experiences. I never met Bruce but would have certainly liked to have had discussions with him.

Thanks for comment. A certificate course is only 120 hours it's not really a professional qualification. It's just an introduction. From my own personal experience, whether or not the student had a degree didn't really make that much of a difference in their ability to teach. I mean, a degree in economics doesn't really prepare you to teach English.. Let's say the experience of getting a university degree is helpful. I'm certain here to say that certificate courses are all anyone ever needs as a qualification. It really depends upon the environment expectations and curriculum. I would also say it’s a decent start. I think it’s fair to say you learn more about teaching English by teaching English that you do by studying about teaching. A certificate course allows someone to get their foot in the door, gain some experience, and decide if that career is really for them. I’ve had hundreds of my former students go on to get masters degrees and make teaching English a real profession.

@@bruceveld yep, true. it was a smart move to start a BA program. very smart. imagine some dude gets first degree, whole life changes, sense of pride, etc. some programs now are upping their game. i wouldn't mind teaching advanced ed courses to these students. I have a ton of degrees from some of the world's best universities, designed programs for the likes of Raffles, etc. But I always get a kick outta seeing the light go on in a student's eyes.

Another fine subject to listen to. I enjoyed his personality and laugh. Running the businesses he did certainly would have made him a few jealous enemies. I’m sure he is no angel and has a huge competitive edge / ego. Taking someone to court 2 times for 7 million is keen. I would worry about someone doing something crazy to you. Better off to let it go

Kudos to the guy, he says he is creative, and I agree with that, and I am sure he is, but to name a company TEFL, is not the most creative one can name a company, I mean, you know, taking off O from TOEFL and make it the name of your company of the same nature as TOEFL. You wish you would have a certificate from a learning institution that is a bit different from TOEFL. I hope TEFL is accredited by education authorities too.

I took the TEFL International course for PELT (still have the certificate signed by David Nunan) back in 2005. It was a legitimate course and the office where the students met was just down the street from Emporium. What's happened since then is that Western teachers can no longer get nonB visas because schools hire Filipinos exclusively at 50% of the salary they used to pay us. I guess I want to say 'thank you' to Bruce for providing me an excellent instructor and an excellent course.
