Hey! Thanks so much for this video. I have made it my 2022 goal to really step up my video quality on my channel. I have a Sony A6400 and clearly am not using it to its full potential. I was about to give up on it before I saw this video. I switched up my settings, based on your recommendations, and they improved most of my issues. But, I am still hung up on this weird bounce that I get. It seems like my background is always bouncing and it makes me a little nauseous when I watch my clips back. Any idea what could be causing this?
@Jason_Hermann
2 жыл бұрын
Honestly not really... It's not supposed to happen, but it is for some people, especially when using the 16-50mm kit lens. You can mess with your focus area by making it smaller and change AF sensitivities to less which should help. Also, you can stop down the aperture to like f/5.6 which will increase the depth of field and should trigger the focus less also. I honestly do not know if this is an issue with the lens or camera, because another subscriber had this issue with the 16-50mm kit lens, but another with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Lens which is what use all the time and have never had the problem... Strange for sure.

I notice it on flat surfaces of single tone. Like a wall, or something that takes up a considerable amount of screen real estate, like you demonstrated. Yes, darker environments also bugs out the auto focus, but I'm generally speaking about shooting a lit scene. That artifact looks distracting. Trying to get rid of it in post doesn't really work. My a6400 keeps shifting focus when I use wide instead of zone and becomes blurry for milliseconds driving me mad. Will registering my face help prioritize? Hi Jay - I have had my a6400 for a week and this is my first camera that isn't point and shoot. A question I have is when I connected to my monitor - which is HDMI 1080p - I saw myself but it was very grainy. From the computer input it is crystal clear. So without me sounding to much of a dummy did I have the cameras output set wrong? - I must admit to setting it to movie mode on the top wheel, but didn't adjust anything in the menus from straight out of the box. Please can you help. Thanks, Peter.
@Jason_Hermann
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, when you say it is crystal clear from the computer input, what does that mean exactly? If the footage is grainy, that usually means the ISO is extremely high. The footage you see on the TV should look the same as what you see on the back of the cameras LCD screen. Although it is larger, so the noise might be easier to see on a large TV. I would recommend checking the ISO and seeing what it is at. HAs far as I know, no HDMI setting will cause this to happen.
@PeterMossUkulele

@@Jason_Hermann Hello Jay and thanks for coming back to me. So I wanted to use my 27” computer monitor for was live monitoring whilst recording. Initially live it was grainy and I was disappointed. @Jason_Hermann
3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can turn off auto focus, but that has nothing to do with the entire scene being sharp. That is called depth of field and you would need still select an area to focus on manually. If you want the entire scene sharp, you will need to stop down the aperture in the lens to like f/11 or so as an example. @Jason_Hermann
Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion Bill. The Filter is allowing the shutter speed to be slower, because it's like wearing sunglasses pretty much. In this lighting environment if I were not using the ND filter, the shutter speed would be like 1/400sec for example, because I am using the lens at f/1.4. This is not good for video, because you want the shutter speed to be double your frame rate. In my case 24 is the frame rate, so I want the shutter speed at 1/50sec and the aperture at f/1.4... A filter is required for that... Have you seen this video yet? kzitem.info/news/bejne/zaposaRja590e3Y

Af drive speed and track sensitivity is normal, Focus area is "area" and focused on the object, Face tracking on. Maybe I miss something? Or manual is the only answers? Thank you very much.

I think what you are describing is the focus breathing. That is basically the micr adjustments that are being made to track a face, but intern causing the background out of focus area to change which is intern causing the "breathing" effect. Does that sound about right? To fix that you would need to use a less shallow depth of field or manual focus. Jay

Hi! I need help, please. I want to set "Face/Eye Priority AF" to ON like you have. But, it tells me I can't. "This operation or setting not available as follows - XAVC S 4K" - I am shooting interviews. So, I want to ensure it stays in focus. All of them so far have not been. I also get the same message when I try to select "Touch Tracking" - It only allows me to choose Touch Focus. Yet, nothing happens when I touch my screen. Not sure how to ensure my interviews are crisp like your video. :(

What settings would you recommend for using motion scenes, like recording driving with the camera pointed out the windshield?
@Jason_Hermann
3 жыл бұрын
I would use the zone area focus to make sure the camera does not focus on the hood of the car. You can move the zone up towards the top of the screen. Other than that I would just try and double the frame rate you are recording at with the shutter speed and prolly sett the camera to f/4 or so depending on what lens and what kind of lighting you are recording in. You may also need an ND filter for brighter conditions to help keep the shutter speed slower that it wants.

@@Jason_Hermann First off, thanks for the advice! I have the a6400 kit lens (16-50mm). I have a variable ND filter, but i find there is a noticeable loss in quality when using it. Perhaps it's because it's a $40 filter and not a $200 filter? Thank you again for your help, i appreciate you taking the time to respond :)
@Jason_Hermann

Yeah, cheap filters are not near as good just like cheap lenses in general. Also, you don't want to darken the scene more than necessary or else the camera will need to use a higher ISO. You ultimately want the shutter speed double the frame rate and ISO at 100 for example.
@galaxytraveler5779

@@Jason_Hermann Perfect. I have the shutter at 60 since my framerate is set to 30. For night time, i have set to auto ISO with a range from 100-3200. I had it set to 6400 but was still getting plenty of grain in darker areas. I guess grain is inevitable though, even with a lower f-stop like 1.4

Low light best settings would be the lower the ISO the cleaner the image, so using a fast aperture lens will help lower the ISO. Best to add lighting if possible when/ if the ISO is really so you can try and lower it.

So, when plugged into a video capture card, using an HDMI cable, does the camera act like it's plugged into a monitor and we lose facial priority automatically in 4k? This is key for live streamers using things like elgato 4k cards.
@Jason_Hermann
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, when recording in 4k it will not have facial priority when using the HDMI out to a monitor on the Sony A6400. In 1080 it does work though. The new Sony A6600 however does not do this in 4k when plugged into a monitor and does maintain facial priority I have read, but have not tested myself..

Hi Jason and thanks for the great info. I used the settings you mentioned, and I had some issues during the filming of a podcast. Could you help me find out where I went wrong in the settings because the sony a6400 keeps trying to focus on the bolts on the microphone stand which is located in front of the subject and thus creating a constant focus battle whenever the subject moves. Can you see it? So the subject is always in focus, but there is a push and pull motion throughout the video on the area of the bolts. What am I missing in my focus settings? I am using continuous AF, AF, release, wide, fast. AF drive speed fast, AF tracking Sens Responsive. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. Best regards, Mike

My guess would be your shutter speed is to high? It should be double whatever frame rate your are shooting at. For example 4k @ 24p, you should have 1/50sec shutter speed...Often times an ND filter or higher aperture value is required to get your shutter speed that slow in bright conditions.

If you consider the quality and definition of 4K / 1080P videos and Photos what camera fo you recommend ? The A6400 or the New ZV-E10?

The sensor is the same, so the video and photo quality is only dependent on the lens used between the two cameras. I would go with the A6400 because it has the viewfinder also. Otherwise the ZV-E10 would be the camera of choice for me between the two.

I'm guessing it is a flaw with some of the kit lenses. You want AFC when recording video normally otherwise I would use manual focus for sure! I would recommend getting a prime lens and try using that. Have you tried using the touch focus instead of touching the focus button on the gimbal? This way the focus is on exactly what you want? It's not easy to do while on a gimbal. I usually use the center zone area for that to keep focus on mostly the center of the screen with Face AF ON usually.
