@@tdawg719 No. 1920x1080 is the same file size no matter the sensor (bit depth and frame rate being equal). 1080p uses about 2 megapixels, so probably about 10% of your camera's pixels. Cropping in camera just uses different pixels (more of the ones closer to the middle of the sensor).

@@gregmonforton4103 it would absolutely lower the file size. If you’re down sampling to certain resolution than the end product would be the same size. But a picture taken in crop mode will be smaller than a picture taken in FF.

FF will always give you more subject separation when keeping identical compositions, so dof will be thinner than in crop mode. Cuz moving in with your feet is not the same as zooming with crop.

When you use Crop Mode in-camera, you have the 4K information, and you can even more zoom in POST, to get even bigger reach if you are delivering in 1080p.

So crop setting outputs a crop sized final file? Not super sampled to 4K?
@GraphicMill

The a7III has a much higher resolution sensor than is needed for video. Full frame is downscaled from 6K to 4k, and the APSC crop mode is also downscaled from 6K to 4K but in a smaller (cropped) area of the sensor. The resolution is there because the sensor has a high enough resolution to do that. The quality difference when cropping into the video clip is evident because the APSC crop mode is already pre-cropped yet is at a full 4K resolution, where the full frame clip has to be cropped more in order to reach the same cropping as the APSC crop. You lose quality because you are losing resolution as you crop more. It’s a similar situation if you compare a full frame photo to an actual APSC camera image. If you crop into a full frame image and match the crop of an APSC image. The APSC camera image is sharper because it’s pre-cropped and shot at 24mp, but the full frame (once cropped) is only (roughly) 16mp. So things start falling apart. If you consistently need to crop into the capacity of a certain lens, (such as shooting wildlife), you would get better results from an APSC Camera because it’s pre-cropped but at full resolution. Sadly, because the a7SIII does not use an over sampling (higher resolution) sensor, the APSC crop mode is only 1080p, not the full 4K. It simply doesn’t have the extra resolution in the sensor itself to produce 4K in the area of an APSC crop on that 12mp sensor. You’ll need a larger focal length lens to get that crop in full frame 4K. That is one of the disadvantages of using a 1-1 sensor. But, the advantage is less rolling shutter and it’s easier to capture 4K-120 because it doesn’t need to process a heavier (over sampled) image and throw away information while recording, so, 4K-120 becomes doable without overheating or limited recording time. This dichotomy is the reason why I have the a6600 (APSC) Camera for certain situations and I’ll sell my a7III once the a7IV arrives so I have an over sampling camera, that (hopefully) has 4:2:2 10bit and can match in (colour wise) to the a7SIII. There is always some reason to spend more money!! 🤣🤪

@GraphicMill

Ramon Solorio, that’s in interesting question and we’ll have to test that. It’s promising because 4K represents 8.3 megapixels(3840x2160) but the sensor is 12mp. So, there is obviously some down sampling happening. And there is still a crop mode available on the a7SIII, but it’s apparently 1080p only. Yet both areas are higher in available sensor resolution. Digital image zoom may actually utilize those extra pixels and not downsample?? (I’m not sure and would need to look deeper). Sony states (or someone stated) that the sensor is a 1-1 sensor readout. But mathematically, that doesn’t seem to be the case. There is about 50% more pixels available. If an APSC crop is 1.5, that means we can reverse that math in multiplying by approximately .666 to determine pixel count in that area. Based on a 12mp sensor, the APSC crop area contains a sensor resolution of 8 megapixels. (Obviously) That’s just slightly less than 4K. So, shooting in APSC crop mode, using your crop lenses, you’re capturing 1080 which is downsampled from almost 4K. Now, don’t quote me on any of this, but it seems to add up. That’s certainly an acceptable scenario and there is nothing wrong with a solid 1080 video clip. As there was nothing wrong with 120 or now 240fps slow-motion in 1080. Bottom line is, the a7SIII has been built to be an unstoppable 4K capturing machine. It has everything we had hoped for. The a7III has created stellar work over the past couple of years and the a7SIII has addressed every single issue we had and raised the bar in many other areas. This is a spectacular videocentric mirrorless camera that will work for you everyday, none stop, for years. It’s a true workhorse for video creators. I couldn’t be more excited! Side note: I’m honestly not excited about 8K, especially out of a hand held mirrorless camera. It’s total overkill and it’s also an editing nightmare. Perhaps in 5 years things might be different. But even looking at a full 4K TV, I don’t see reality that sharp and saturated. It’s too much! We all talk about a more ‘cinematic look’ to our footage and there is an agenda with some people to use vintage lenses to help create that cinematic feel... and that boils down to a softer image. Great cinematic stories are softer, easy to watch. Yes, SciFi and heavy action blockbusters are more in-your-face and that’s where 8K might be appreciated, but for the most part, 4K is already plenty. So, we need to shoot and frame our shots properly in 4K and capture a great story that touches people’s hearts. We can even do that in 1080 or 720 and still move people’s emotions. So now, it’s not the camera, it’s all on us and the edit. Lol

Chris Brockhurst interesting ok so the differences are so negligible that there isn’t really a clear choice minus the effect of being able to “see” the crop ahead of time in camera. Your camera is factory program to go to Super 35, so you would have to go into that setting and put it into FF by disabling 35mm/ff auto. 35 mm is better for shooting in lowlight and has been the std in cinema for decades, but some directors do shoot in FF but their cinema lens cost over $10000. If you have apsc lenses, you can shoot video with them in Super35 and get great footage and reach as well.

I should say I'm surprised! Never expected the difference between these 2 be as narrow as this and it shows how a downsampled 6k to 4k image is more detailed than a 4k footage. It means 4k out of a 24mp apsc sensor is way detailed than a fullframe footage on apsc mode as even 42mp sensors cans provide enough megapixels for a 6k footage on crop mode.... I wonder why nobody has mentioned that the A7r4 is the only fullframe camera being capable of this feature if it does though! And that purple fringing on apsc mode comes from physics.... Watch Christopher Frost lens reviews and see how fullframe dedicated lenses treat on apsc sensors usually weaker.

If you're shooting really wide (like with the 7artisans APS-C 7.5mm F2.8), crop mode becomes more or less necessary. Even with the closest RAW "Lens Correction" Lightroom profile (Samyang 7.5mm F3.5) maxing out past 200, the full-frame image has a huge amount of barrel distortion; Whereas, when shooting in APS-C mode, I'm able to properly correct the image with that same Samyang profile at 130. Just something to be aware of, I guess 👍🏻

Hi Chris, This was a great video and I search for it on KZitem and found exactly what I was looking for. I have a 70-180 F 2.8 Tamron FE and set my A7C on cropped mode, used clear image zoom to max and zoomed to 180mm. It matched my 30X zoom pocket camera which is around 900mm. I was thinking about getting the Sony 200-600mm F.6 but now I am going to wait a bit. I am really not much of a pixel peeper so quality is not paramount. What is is the ability to use a gimbal for video and the Sony 200-600mm is just way too heavy. Thanks for all your hard work because I really appreciated your video. Sincerely, Craig

some of the softness seen in FF could be that the dof is thinner than in crop mode and/or the FF image is not using the center part of the lens, where the crop mode is. Overall, I agree, it doesn't matter too much, but for most subject separation and lowest noise possible, FF is king, but this is for another video.
