Congrats on the successful repair. I been there and done it quite a few times on TV's that have had broken traces. Imagine if someone gave you this to repair and having to say "hey i got it done for ya, it did take 30hours of labor that will be $1000 bucks please." So you could only do this repair for yourself. this defiantly points out how important it is to ship things properly.

Thanks! For sure, there's simply no way paying someone a reasonable hourly rate to repair this would be economical unless, unlike me, they're very skilled and quick to identify and fix the issue! For what it's worth, I was never happy with the quality of the repair in this video and the color would get flaky when everything had heated up. I re-visited the repair a while back and added proper bodge wires to all the broken traces, a picture of which is here: x.com/retrobitstv/status/1690831776623558657 It's still not professional quality work but I'm happier with this and it works 100% of the time now :)

I still have a breadbin C64 with a svideo cable I made with the resistor in line to make it work on standard svideo monitors. Now I have an svideo to hdmi converter on the way so I can run both my UII+ on original hardware and Ultimate64 on an HDMI monitor. @badreality2

@@retrobitstv Really? I'm glad you checked, because that surprises me. All of the self-terminating PVMs that I have seen, will use a symbol, that looks like a squiggly line, next to the BNC video out (not only will the RGBs line have this symbol, but the composite line on a self-terminating monitor will have it too). This is the first monitor that I know of, that doesn't have those symbols, that self-terminates. ...on a side note, there are also PVMs (made by other brands), that can be manually self-terminated, not only by a BNC terminator, but by physical built-in on/off switches, by each BNC connector.

@retrobitstv

Great question, and the answer is yes. As with my other CRTs, the sync signal the IIgs puts out has something strange going on and doesn't work acceptably. I don't know if it's something wrong with my machine in particular or just how they all are designed. I need to get a scope hooked up to the IIgs output and see what's going on so I can try and adapt it to work properly.

@@retrobitstv It would be great to hear how it turns out. I have an Apple II GS that I picked up in the middle of a move right before COVID hit and I haven't even unpacked it (I honestly don't even know if it turns on). @@styloroc2000 The Commodore 1084S-P seems to be the only CRT I have that can handle the IIGs properly (as well as the ST in low or medium color mode). The 1084 has a funky DIN connector for analog RGB, but seems to work fine with both RGBhv and RGBc sync signals. If you stumble upon one for a fun price, get it, but these seriously have become scalper territory. Here in the EU just get a KV-14xxx model. The consumer versions. Image quality is very close (the tube itself is the same). They look cuter, as they give that true eighties/early nineties kids room nostalgia, and with SCART they are much easier to hookup. The monitor only supports 15khz so 240p or 480i. Nothing that's higher like 720p or 1080i. Also, component video / YPbPr isn't the same as the analog RGB with composite sync that this model of PVM uses. You would need a converter or a cable that puts out RGBs natively.

I have two working Amiga 1080 monitors I've had since they were new. I'd love to be able to adapt them to my PC laptop which has both VGA & HDMI outputs to be able to play retro games in analog RGB mode on my 1080 monitors. Would you have any idea how to adapt them? I've been looking for years, and found nothing. Only people doing the opposite (why? Run Amiga hardware on LCD's. Yuk). I know people have used Amiga monitors as test bench monitor for arcade PCB's. I'd just love to be able to use the MAME emulator and others on this monitor, but in RGB mode, not grainy composite video mode. I built 4 MAME machines all using CRT's, including a WG 6100 color vector and a G05 b&w vector. My raster monitors are 19" open frame arcade monitors that use regular TV tubes as RGB arcade monitors for a very authentic picture of classic games like Pacman and tons of others, but these came adapted from the manufacturers with VGA computer hookups and you have to set the refresh rate on the video cards to 60 khz. I love the picture on these If I could use my 1080 monitors for this, I could be testing games in my living room instead of my basement arcade, so it could be handy. Thanks for any tips.
@retrobitstv
2 жыл бұрын
Most VGA PCs output 31Khz or higher so they won't work with the 1080 unless you use an external downscaler but the result is not good. There are some VGA cards that can be forced to output 15Khz as long as you're in a 320x240 video mode and in DOS, but they're relatively few and far between.
@n8goulet
2 жыл бұрын
@@retrobitstv I'm hoping there is so way to do it with a downscaler as someone recently had mentioned, so I can try out various games & emulators in the comfort of my living room. In my basement arcade, I've been using 19" arcade open frame CRT monitors which unlike computer VGA monitors of the 90s/2000s use a regular TV tube for authentic look of retro 80s games, but the boards on these monitors instead run at 31khz and came with VGA connectors running at a fix resolution of 640x480 with a 60khz refresh rate. About 20 years ago I started buying these, and they are very difficult to find now and difficult to find people who can work on them. The tube went in one, the other 3 I've been able to have repaired as needed so far with one possibly needing service again. Both classic arcade games from Pacman into the 90s look fantastic, providing the same look when I compare the games at the many retro arcades I visit on a regular basis. It has not been a problem at all that most of the games ran at lower resolutions originally or 15 khz. They still look the same on these monitors. I've been very impressed, and I'm picky with monitors. Computer VGA monitors of the 90s look very different. I also run emulators for the Amiga, Atari 2600/7800/8 bit computers, Apple ][, Colecovision and others. All look & fantastic as I remember, and I still have most of my original consoles & computers since I was a kid or teen (now in my 50s). I'm also very satisfied with the general software emulation of them, except rare cases. So I'm just trying to do the same on my 1080 monitor. A more recent stumbling block maybe you or someone on this thread could help with. Most computers in the 90s & earlier 2000s work fine on these special monitors when set at 640x480 60 khz. I'm unable to get machines newer than Core2Duo to sync on the monitor using the same video settings. Any clue? I have an i5 machine and AMD i7 equiv waiting to upgrade. I'd be so grateful if I could figure this out. Most of the classic games work fine on the Core2Duo, but there are a still a few that don't, and the never versions of the emulators often need more power to run even old games, such as Atari's Destroyer from 1977 runs slow on the Core2Duo but fine on my i7 laptop. It was probably a 1 mhz game! Not sure why it's slow. Much newer games with far more advanced graphics & sound run fine, even on the same emulator.
