We're all glad you found your way through. ❤ Ren wrote this in tribute to his friend Joe Hughes, who got lost in his darkness and was never found after jumping from the Menai bridge. (The video was recorded on a bridge, too.) I love the way it can be read from the perspective of the person who cannot go on, or the people left behind. Freckled Angels was written about Joe, too.

I saw that video earlier, and it was really sweet, and I'm thrilled she's starting to get some love at last. When I look at the number of views on some of her videos it's little short of criminal how few there are. She has some new music coming out soon (?), can't wait. I think independent is the way of the future - cut out the middle-man, be free to speak your truth and people will find you.

Independent is independent and really hard to make it in the music biz, regardless of being female or male. Not sure why you pre-qualified it considering the biggest pop stars on earth are mostly women.
@horsehollerer
Жыл бұрын
@@manuelper I hear you, but I fear it might be more accurate to say that the biggest sex symbols in music are mostly women. Regardless of their level of talent (which is usually very high imho) the industry's expectations for how female artists look, behave and create art are very different than for their male counterparts. I cannot imagine that the likes of Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, Bad Bunny etc have to deal with the same shallow aesthetic expectations forced upon, say, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Dua Lipa, HER, Olivia Rodrigo etc. (Women should be able to wear/do whatever they want, of course ... I'm talking solely about industry framing.) E.g. for years, Billie Eilish was repeatedly demonized by the media, and even sections of the industry, for daring to act/think differently and for rejecting the norms for female artists. And I think Chinchilla said in an interview recently that her record label told her not to release Little Girl Gone because it was too aggressive and would ruffle feathers ... and besides people simply wouldn't like it. Without the benefit of hindsight, and the knowledge that everything would turn out ok, it must have taken a heck of a lot of courage to reject the powerful, controlling, profiteering music industry, in favor of preserving her artistic ideals ... and yes, sadly I think it's harder for women to do that. Cheers.

@@horsehollerer Sex always sells, but that doesn't mean there haven't been huge stars that did not become huge stars on the basis of talent alone. Look at Adele or Aretha, to name two "divas" off the top of my head. And let's not pretend that there haven't been plenty of men that were huge just strictly on the basis of being 'pretty'. Shit the entire boy-band phenomenom (including the likes of BTS) is built on it.

As usual, great reaction. As for "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide; Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs, "Freckled Angels" being one examples. It is dedicated to Joe Hughes, who committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010. Someone else commented that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from. His body was never recovered. Their live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it due to my own daily struggles. Although, losing your best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would also recommend their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk in Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable.

He got far with his music act Trick tha fox and the Sony signing but then him becoming sick just made it all crumble and he had to pause everything for almost a decade until the 2 Stem cell transplants around 2016 gave him his life back. Since then bit by bit he's been able to push himself again & create and gaining recognition and fans with his busking, The Big Push and the video's with some going viral.
