The second call was correct. You can't step in the way of a catcher throwing out the runner. Contact does not have to be made. And what most people do not know: the batter's box does not protect the batter. If you step in any direction which impedes the catcher's ability to make the throw, even if in the batter's box, it's interference. It's best to make your normal swing and not make any other subsequent movements outside of your normal follow through (and staying in the box) when a runner is stealing.
@BoomerKeith1

Exactly. Batters can be called for interference while remaining in the box if they do anything to impede the catcher. I had a JUCO game where a batter attempted a "warm up swing" immediately after a called strike, while the catcher was rising to make a throw to second on an advancing runner. I called the batter out and had every coach on that team telling me I was wrong. I directed them to rule 6.06, which clearly states the aforementioned.

There doesn't have to contact for batter interference to be called but at the same time there was no contact and it was a really good throw. So did it actually interfere with the throw... I don't think it did and this would have been a good no call. Stay within the rules but let the players decide gray areas and the other team had a runner in scoring position that got canceled by a no matter how you look at it questionable interference call.

If you had you would have seen a clean throw with no contact. You could call it but you would be equally right for not calling it. I don't think you call it and I know you don't call that in professional baseball. Why you ask? Well Dave because the batter didn't interfere with the throw. Why you ask? Well Dave because there was no contact and a true throw there was no hesitation at all by the catcher. The batter BARELY leans out of the batter's box. Had the batter not leaned out of the batter's box/sort of over the plate the throw would not have changed at all.

@@davej3781 He absolutely follows through on the throw as he normally would. It was a good throw and the catchers throwing motion is not interrupted and he gets the throw off with full power/speed. No way shape or form is the guys throwing motion is interfered with. The bottom line is that catcher got off a really good throw and that could not happen if there was interference. Not calling inference there is perfectly ok this it is not black and white either way this play is the very definition of a gray area where you use your judgement and either way can be right.

If that head coach isn't suspended it is a travesty. The NCAA has a rule that you have to immediately leave the facility after being ejected. You don't get any last words at all by rule so if you comment or argue at all even one word you are to be warned then suspended if you don't immediately leave without argument. That is a rule that the NCAA coaches committee created a few years back. The problem is Conferences and umpires do a horrible job of enforcing it. Horrible job by the umpire crew and the home plate umpire. You don't even know he is ejected I thought he was pulling the card out to issue a balls and strikes warning because he did not signal ejection. The crew was super late getting their to escort the guy off the field.
