Making more new discoveries as we traveled through Southeast Arizona on our grand "A Year ON The Road" RV adventure, we stumbled across the stunning Chiricahua National Monument just south of Willcox. The product of a devastating volcanic eruption nearby, roughly 27 million years ago, Chiricahua is known as the "Wonderland of Rocks," because of the vast amounts of volcanic ash that landed hereabouts and slowly turned into rhyolite, forming into unique pillars and shapes that have been steadily eroded over the millennia. The caldera caused by the explosion is 12 MILES wide, and the National Monument is a lasting testament to that stunning volcanic power. with an eight-mile scenic drive that concludes in the grand overview from Massai Point, 6,870ft above sea level.
