Ummm Umm! A southerners dream right there....Bags of pure goodness! We have a guy here local that does/did this same practice. But, he doesn't understand the pea harvest. The last time I got peas from him, they were sour. We tired to explain the heat they go through. But, he wasn't going to be told anything. So, he lost a lot of customers over that.

appreciate peas more but don't see how 100 bags a day pays the bills not like soybeans semi load after semi load

Thanks for watching/commenting! I started driving (trucks) on my own in the 3rd grade. By 5th grade they would send me to town to get parts….but that was in the 90s. Most young kids are to wrapped up in virtual world these days.

We tried a water bath once to pull the heat out, to many issues. We would just stack crates in a cooler 1 row deep with widow fans pulling cold air thru. It did good job, still by late morning early afternoon we just quick picking in heat.

Water causes problems with shelling. Blow air across them for several hours and they shell way better.

We plant dixie lee peas up here in Eastern North Carolina. They are a bigger pea but good and sweet. We usually get two pickings off of them. Sometimes three.

If we hand pick most varieties will continue to make until frost or disease gets them as long as you don’t let any peas mature on the vine. We picked cream 12 by hand every 3 days for a month before we mechanized harvest

@@PatrickShivers OK. Gotcha. We hand pick our peas. Always have. We also let them dry out and pick them for seeds to plan next year

Patrick, they look like green runner beans to me. If they're peas what sort are they. I'm in southern Australia so unfamiliar with this crop.

“Cow peas” are also called “southern peas” and those terms encompass 20+ varieties ranging from tiny cream peas, like these and lady fingers to large crowder peas like purple hulls and blackeyes.
