For all the people asking Setarko "will you make a video about Ukraine"-no, he will not. Setarko isn't a military/economics/political expert, he knows just as much about the war as you do. Besides, he stated his position a few times in commuinty posts and has nothing more to say. Finally, if those arguments aren't enough for you, i'll remind you that speaking about such things will not only cause horrible chaos in the comments, but can also be, to some extent, not exactly safe for Setarko's channel.

Dude, you have no idea how big of a deal the Canada vs Soviet Union series was in Canada. My dad still tells me stories all the time about how they literally stopped school so that all the kids could watch the game. It was both a huge shock that the Soviets were so good and a massive point of pride that we won. Honestly I think a phenomenal movie could be made about the series that explores the perspectives of both sides. Both the sides of the teams and the countries themselves. There is so much potential drama there. Though I would be afraid that if a movie was made in either Canada or the US that it could become a piece of anti-russian propaganda instead of an impartial dramatization of the events.

From 1975 to 1991, the clubs of the USSR played 108 matches with the teams of the National Hockey League. During this time, the Clubs of the USSR won 58 victories, 10 matches ended in a draw and lost 40 times to the representatives of the NHL. The most successful team in NHL history is the Montreal Canadiens, with 24 Stanley Cups and 35 Finals appearances. The greatest number of times the winner of the USSR championship was CSKA Moscow - 32. Their meetings with each other: 12/31/1976 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 3: 3 12/31/1979 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 4: 2 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 09/18/1990 CSKA - Montreal Canadiens - 3: 2 CSKA won here! Also, CSKA is the record holder of the European Ice Hockey Cup, which won 20 titles, and from 1978 to 1990 did it 13 times in a row. Champions of European countries participated in the draws of this tournament. Therefore, CSKA can be called the strongest team of all time! Meetings of the owner of the Stanley Cup with the champion of the USSR, who became in the season in which the match took place: 12/29/1979 New York Islanders - CSKA - 2: 3 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 01/12/1991 Pittsburgh Penguins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 3: 4 Meetings of the owner or finalist of the Stanley Cup with the champion or silver medalist of the USSR Championship, who became in the season in which the matches between them took place: 12/31/1976 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 3: 3 01/11/1976 Philadelphia Flyers - CSKA - 4: 1 12/29/1979 New York Islanders - CSKA - 2: 3 12/29/1985 Calgary Flames - Dynamo (Moscow) - 4: 3 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 01/09/1990 Boston Bruins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 1: 3 09/13/1990 Spartak (Moscow) - Minnesota North Stars - 8: 3 01/12/1991 Pittsburgh Penguins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 3: 4 As can be seen from the results, the USSR clubs on the field turned out to be stronger than the NHL clubs. Also, the symbolic team of the century included 4 players who played in the USSR championships and 2 players who played in the NHL. The six members of the symbolic team were chosen by voting organized by the IIHF. The selection committee included 56 hockey experts from 16 countries in Europe and North America. Symbolic team of the century: Goalkeeper: Vladislav Tretiak (USSR) - 30 votes. Defender: Vyacheslav Fetisov (USSR) - 54 votes. Defender: Börje Salming (Sweden) - 17 votes. Wing: Valery Kharlamov (USSR) - 21 votes. Wing: Sergei Makarov (USSR) - 18 votes. Center forward: Wayne Gretzky (Canada) - 38 votes In connection with the above, the USSR championship can be considered the strongest league in the world!

I don't know about now, back in the 1980s, hockey pucks in the USA said "MADE IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA" on them. So I'm not surprised to hear that that is where the Soviet Union went looking for expertise. ... It looks like they still are.

Your videos are a great resource to get to know other parts of russian history and lifestyle, even those "non serious" matters, like sports in this case, thank you!!. It's a great video but I don't necessarily agree with your standpoint about russian football. Yes, they're far away from the level of the 'football powers', and you can rarely find more than just one good player for any playing position; but still they've proven to be good enough to reach quarter-finals (and yes, granted! they went through a lot of penalty shootouts, but just as other great teams have done in the past!). So I'm pretty sure that if football becomes more popular in russia and some actual 'little promises' player get playing abroad (in europe), it's very likely from your and many other peoples minds to change about russian football team! Again, many thanks for your content and work! p.s: and If you didn't make it yet, please someday make a video about soviet/russian rock music and it's impact on russian society! best regards!

It's worth noting that for a long time international competitions such as the IIHF Word Championship and Olympics were only open to amateurs. Since all of Canada's best players went to play professionally in the NHL, Canada's best players couldn't compete internationally. Canada saw this as unfair as they considered Soviet and Czechoslovakian players to be "amateurs" only on paper and eventually refused to take part those competitions. The 1972 Summit Series was the first time professionals competed internationally, but was only an exhibition tournament. Four years later the Canada Cup was created as a tournament in which amateurs and professionals could compete side-by-side. The Canada Cup was replaced by the World Cup of Hockey in 1992, but interest has declined since professionals are now allowed to compete the World Championship and Olympics.

One more thing about the cooperation with Czechoslovakia. The history of the 1969 championship is very interesting. Originally it was supposed to be held in Prague, but because the Soviet tanks occupied the city the year before, it was held in Sweden. There the Czechoslovaks beat the USSR twice, but that never happened (once even 2-0). Then the Czechoslovakians refused to shake hands with the USSR team, live, it was an international scandal. They were very motivated, and even though they only brought home the bronze (and the USSR gold medal), the nation welcomed them at the airport and praised them for how they returned the favor to the USSR team. It also had political repercussions and exchanges at the highest levels, with Marshal Grechko coming to Czechoslovakia and even threatening military intervention again. And you think to yourself - it's just sport. Since then, sports commentators have noticed that our team, even if it doesn't give its best performance, is always significantly more motivated in a match with the Russian team.

After seeing those "unlike football" moments you've reminded me that World Cup from 2018. When Poland got phenomenally sent to home by Senegal I was shouting shit (in style of "kurwa, jebać was, umieta tylko w reklamach grać") like that commentator from the last clip, just in negative aspect. So I thought: why not to watch Russia play? I was shocked to see Spain being ultimately kicked out by them and then the meme match came: every other Slav cheering a fight between Russians and Croats. And after switching to cheering Croats they really stole everyone's hearts after being exhausted with having to play 3 extended matches, including 2 penalties series... Yeah, Croats deserve to get a star on their shirts the next World Cup comes.
@Setarko

I don't really think many people in Russia were that upset by the loss to Croatia on penalties. Before that WC everyone though we would not make it out of groups. We looked like shit in friendlies before the WC. Uruguay was seen as an absolute favourite, Egypt had Salah and there were legitimate concerns that Saudis are a tough opponent. And obviously nobody expected us to beat Spain. Also, it is hard not to like this Croatian team so losing to them was fine, I guess. I would really like the Croats to show up at this World Cup, but I'm afraid that their golden generation is getting too old for 2022.

Let's define the best in the history of hockey. And the best were Canadian and Soviet hockey players, it was they who most often won various tournaments. *The best championship in the history of hockey* Champions of European countries participated in the European Ice Hockey Cup. For the first time the Soviet club took part in this tournament in 1968. Since that time, Soviet clubs have won this tournament 21 times, once a club from the Czech Republic and once a club from Sweden, the Soviet clubs lost to them in the final. As we can see here the overwhelming advantage of the Soviet teams. Now let's compare the meetings of the USSR clubs with the NHL clubs. From 1975 to 1991, the clubs of the USSR played 108 matches with the teams of the National Hockey League. During this time, the Clubs of the USSR won 58 victories, 10 matches ended in a draw and lost 40 times to the representatives of the NHL. But it is logical to compare the results of teams playing on equal terms, that is, the first team of the USSR with the first team in the NHL, the second team of the USSR with the second team in the NHL, etc. Based on the results of the Super Series matches, this is problematic to do, since they did not play according to this principle. But let's try to do it. Meetings of the owner or finalist of the Stanley Cup with the champion or silver medalist of the USSR Championship, who became in the season in which the matches between them took place: 12/31/1976 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 3: 3 01/11/1976 Philadelphia Flyers - CSKA - 4: 1 12/29/1979 New York Islanders - CSKA - 2: 3 12/29/1985 Calgary Flames - Dynamo (Moscow) - 4: 3 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 01/09/1990 Boston Bruins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 1: 3 09/13/1990 Spartak (Moscow) - Minnesota North Stars - 8: 3 01/12/1991 Pittsburgh Penguins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 3: 4 Here the victory from the scores of 5:2 was won by the Soviet clubs. But during the meetings, the Soviet clubs from 1975 to 1989 were strengthened by hockey players from other clubs, which puts the participants in the games in unequal conditions. Soviet clubs strengthened their composition from other clubs with 1 - 6 hockey players, and on average - 3, (7) - me (except for the strengthening of Spartak, the players who played during the super series for various teams). But since 1989, Soviet clubs have ceased to grow stronger. Therefore, let's take a look at the match statistics of real clubs without strengthening them with players from other clubs. In the super series 1989/90 and 1990/91, Soviet clubs played with their squads without reinforcements. As a result of these series, Soviet clubs won 30 victories, suffered 24 defeats and drew 4 games. Meetings of the owner or finalist of the Stanley Cup with the champion or silver medalist of the USSR championship in matches without reinforcement by players from other clubs: 01/09/1990 Boston Bruins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 1: 3 09/13/1990 Spartak (Moscow) - Minnesota North Stars - 8: 3 01/12/1991 Pittsburgh Penguins - Dynamo (Moscow) - 3: 4 The victory of the Soviet clubs with a score of 3:0. Moreover, in the 1990/1991 season, 14 Soviet hockey players had already left to play in the NHL, among whom were Sergei Fedorov, Sergei Makarov, Alexander Mogilny, Alexei Kasatonov, Igor Larionov, Vyacheslav Fetisov. And this clearly did not strengthen the championship of the USSR. As can be seen from the results, the USSR clubs on the field turned out to be stronger than the NHL clubs. Share of games played by USSR clubs in Super Series: 1. CSKA - 33.33% 2. Dynamo (Moscow) - 20.37% 3. Wings of the Soviets - 13.89% 4. Chemist - 13.89% 5. Dynamo (Riga) - 8.33% 6. Spartak "- 6.48% 7. Falcon - 1.85% 8. SKA - 1.85% Most often, CSKA played in the super series, so I will take this club for comparison. CSKA played 26 (wins) -8 (losses) -2 (draws) with NHL clubs. For comparison, in the 1988/1989 USSR Championship, CSKA had 23-8-5. If 2 points are awarded for a win and 1 point for a draw, then the average number of points scored per game in the Super Series for CSKA will be 1.5 points per game. On average, USSR clubs played 5 matches per series. An average of 9.5 NHL teams took part in one series. Therefore, I will calculate how many points CSKA scored in the USSR Championship, not to take into account the points of the first stage. 10 teams took part in the second stage. In the second stage in the USSR championship, CSKA in the same seasons in which CSKA played in the super series, scored an average of 1.49 points per game. The average number of points scored per game in the 1989/90 and 1990/91 Super Series for CSKA (without reinforcement) was 1.71. That is, in the USSR CSKA championship, points were given more difficult than with the NHL clubs. Therefore, according to the results of the meetings, the best championship in the world was the championship of the USSR. *The best club in the history of hockey* The most successful team in NHL history is the Montreal Canadiens, with 24 Stanley Cups and 35 Finals appearances. The greatest number of times the winner of the USSR championship was CSKA Moscow - 32. Their meetings with each other: 12/31/1976 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 3: 3 12/31/1979 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 4: 2 12/31/1985 Montreal Canadiens - CSKA - 1:6 09/18/1990 CSKA - Montreal Canadiens - 3: 2 CSKA won here with a score of 2:1! 09/18/1990 CSKA beat the Montreal Canadiens 3:2 without being reinforced by players from other clubs. Also, the Ice Hockey European Cup was most often taken by CSKA, which won it 20 times, and from 1978 to 1990 did it 13 times in a row. According to this indicator, CSKA is significantly ahead of other clubs. Therefore, according to the results of the games, CSKA is the strongest team of all time! The USSR national team was represented by about half of the CSKA players. The share of hockey players from various clubs in the USSR national team from 1975 to 1989: 1. CSKA - 51.78% 2. Dynamo Moscow - 19.82% 3. Spartak Moscow - 10.06% 4. Wings of the Soviets Moscow - 7.40% 5. Torpedo Gorky - 3.85% 6. Tractor Chelyabinsk - 2.37% 7. Chemist Voskresensk - 1.78% 8. Dinamo Riga - 1.48% 9. Motorist Sverdlovsk - 0.59% 10. SKA Leningrad - 0.30% 11. Salavat Yulaev Ufa - 0.30% 12. Sokol Kyiv - 0.30% *Symbolic team of the century* The symbolic team of the century included 4 players who played in the USSR championships and 2 players who played in the NHL. The six members of the symbolic team were chosen by voting organized by the IIHF. The selection committee included 56 hockey experts from 16 countries in Europe and North America. Russia's futsal teams do have a lot of naturalized Brazilians tho. But yeah, Russian players are also good. Maybe it is due to the fact that you can actually play futsal during winter lol

My ex Jorgen would say that the Soviet Union took up hockey because they finally saw the light. I was surprised about the1980 Olympics and that the U.S. beat the Soviets. It got turned into a propaganda coup that demonstrated that American capitalism is why we won. I nodded off during that. I don't know much about hockey except that its a religion in the Scandinavian countries. Member of an outlaw motorcycle gang ends up in prison, the club or gang will pay for that person's kids hockey while doing time. Canadian prisons have hockey rinks, if one doesn't behave themselves, then they lose their hockey privileges. According to my ex, Sweden is the best at hockey, they are champions at all times, even if they lose. Logic flaw ... Was interesting video. Thanks

Vladimir Putin really seems to appreciate sport in the country. I mean learning how to skate and then playing hockey one year later is pretty impressing. Sweden, Russia, Finland are the best games to watch when their is a world cup or olympics! Really enjoyed the video! Could you do a video on Russian football? Big clubs, national team etc?

Seems that Hockey in Russia is like Golf in other Countries. - Rich & Powerful people do it, not because they like the sport, but because it's where you can meet other Rich & Powerful people to make dirty deals.

"Plane-crash ?! What Plane-crash ? There was no Plane-crash !!!" - Vasily Stalin (I don't know how true the story is, but after that scene in "The Death of Stalin" I looked it up. It does seem like Vasily Stalin might really had been put in charge of training the Soviet Ice Hockey team. Not because he knew anything about the game, but because he was such useless drunk, they couldn't trust him to do any serious job. However, When most, if not the entire Russian team died in a Plane-crash*, he DID manage to cover it up and Stalin never found out. * = For once a real real accident)

I really tried to like ice hockey I watched lots of games But I can't... I get bored after a few minutes 😂 The goal is too small, the goalie is too big Most of the time we cant see where the puck is That's total nonsense to me So I just stick with football FIFA banned Russia from the world cup, but hopefully they will be back on the next one 👍
@Setarko

Well I have pretty much the same issue with the puck 😂
@Bullwine

The key to it is not necessarily to focus on the puck, but moreso how the players are positioned and how they react. In the words of Wayne Gretzky, "A good player knows where the puck is. A great player knows where it's going to be"

How popular is motorsports in Russia after Kvyat, Sirotkin, Petrov, Shwartzman etc?
@Setarko
Жыл бұрын
Well tbh I'm not really sure myself. Yeah, people rooted for Kvyat, Petrov, etc. but there is this notion that motorsports are the sports of rich people. And it is not entirely untrue. So I wouldn't say that motorsports in Russia is a sport that is loved by ordinary people.

@@redbullsauberpetronas Not very popular. It's something you would watch occasionally, but not anything you would go to do. Russian teams take over rallies if anything, not flat racing. There's a carting ground and an off-road racing ground not very far away from me, but it's way less popular then figure skating or even "sport tourism/hiking with tents" or anything. Probably at the same range as equestrian or yachts - crazy rich people stuff. I know more people who do equestrian then those who race, but more people who watch racing (usually, F1) then those who watch equestrian. And more people who watch biathlone (skiing+ shooting) then F1 and racing in general. And i dare say you're more likely to meet a person who has experienced participating valley ski racing competitions, then one who has ever watched motor racing live. Russia is also generally not the place for sport-style-cars (high speed low profile) and motorcycles to be popular. The stereotypical millionaire car is not a Porsche, but a black Mersedes Helendwagen
