Remember to play to game for fun and not to look at the speed-running community as the base for what you and the rest of the community should be. If you like speed-running, then go for it. But you like taking your time or play wacky builds, then do just that. And don't be toxic toward people who plays unoptimized builds, when playing with random people.

That largely depends whether they have the brain space to know what optimized means. ie not having guard skills on db or something like. meta builds can be anything from speedrunners to min maxxed wide range/sleep bombers, true them kinds of builds wont be dps champions but because if they actually know what skills work together they will just be knocking shit over, paralysing etc etc. There is a point about playing what you find to be fun but at the same time don't spoil other peoples hunt by 100% being too stubborn/stupid to just play 'properly'. Have 1.7k hunts with Hunting Horn in Iceborne, somthing like 50% higher than next most used weapons IG & HBG. But in Rise I got less than a 50, which is maybe 10% of IG and HBG. I get wanting to make it more approachable, but it's to simple now. I hate the new buff mechanic, and alot of the nuance of the weapon is gone. I do like the new performance in stead of OG R2 input, I like song of infernal flame mechanic. But I can't stand the 2 button input songs, or spamming Zr too A combos for optimal damage. I really missed 180° back swings, back+input abbreviated notes, and tracking 4-5 input chains to build buffs. I haven't played Sunbreak yet though(sold Switch after 500hours of Rise), hopefully I'll like HH better on PS4. Not looking promising sadly. Probably pick up more GL & Lance though, there definitely more interesting than Iceborne.

@@Xero_Remains I agree with how a lot of the weapon's nuance is gone with the changes made to the weapon. I still love playing it time to time but the things that made it enjoyable are kind of gone now in lieu of just going ham and still being able to pull off the same things that were a struggle to get in older titles like 4U. There's only a need to know 3 melodies, which can easily be achieved by doing 1 or 2 things in Rise. In World/Iceborne there was a few more things to know; and in 4/4U there would be an assortment of melodies you needed to memorize that changed between hunting horns in addition to needing to periodically apply self-improvement.

Heavy bowgun secondary. It is indeed the most powerful overall, but there's a lot of misunderstanding about the weapon that is difficult to understand from just watching a speedrun of the weapon. For example, rising sun does not add extra hits, it slows down the bullet allowing more procs from piercing ammo. This means it is useless with spread ammo and since it slows down the bullets, you need to pre-fire where the monster will be otherwise you just miss. An organized run will attempt to lock down the monster to prevent that. Rising moon increases bullet velocity increasing your effective critical distance. I don't know if you can even use them together, they might cancel each other out or only count the last one it passed through, haven't bothered testing it. The only thing for sure you get is 2x wirebug damage for mounting. Crouching fire buff make other ammo's more effective like piercing and normal, overall they are very nice to use now. For elemental piercing and spread, it's probably more effective to just keep shooting. While HBG can do bucket loads of damage, it's overall not as easy to use as LBG due to it being slower and not so obvious skills. While you can do damage more than other weapons, when asked how you can out damage other competitive HBG players is the real demonstration of the skill ceiling.

There's a requisite level of proficiency and experience you need to have in a weapon before truly understanding how difficult it is to optimise it. I've run with Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Hammer and Dual Blades and the sections of the video you cover these weapons in show an elementary and sometimes misinformed outline of their playstyle. - Dual Blades are super easy on lower tier monsters where you can spam Spiral Slash with traps/other cc but on endgame monsters that can fight back, actually optimising your positioning and timing to exploit every possible Spiral Slash window can be quite difficult, due to the move's trajectory and hitbox properties. Demon Flight spam whilst relatively safe because generous s is also hard to aim and ensure you connect all hits with favourable hitzones. Some monsters you can actually still run Demon Flurry Rush and use Demon Dance for DPS when the monster isn't downed i.e. Chameleos and Teostra. Dual blades is also one of the more complex weapons to optimise a set and script for each matchup because it's so element reliant e.g. element shitzone monsters like Astalos, Lunagaron, Gold Rathian and Valstrax require some weird specific setups to get a good run. Also people don't prefer to use regular Demon Mode because it is "faster", its used because it does more damage in the majority of matchups. - I'm not sure what you mean when you mention Switch Axe not having a "whole lot to optimise" - if it's regarding just basic combos that's pretty true, morph loop combo almost always wins, but optimal combo choices aren't hard to optimise for other weapons either. However, setbuilding with Switch Axe is super diverse in terms of options you have for every hitzone - element phials, elemental power phials, poison power phials and exhaust phials all work. Furthermore, one thing you glossed over was proper positioning, but you addressed it mainly as a means to not get hit - I think the most important part of optimising and mastering Switch Axe is positioning and movement. Not only is your defence reliant on positioning and movement incorporating morph slashes and side hops but all your offense builds off it (ironically that clip you have of my gameplay has some very bad positioning and movement). Switch Axe's wide sweeping moves need you to properly position and aim to land every hit of the morph loop or EBC on the best hitzones, and you must constantly microposition to maintain aggression and set up for the next combo or counter, particularly on mobile monsters due to your own limited mobility. Also using ZSD "every now and again" isn't exactly an optimised playstyle - ZSD is usually a DPS loss relative to morph loops or EBC, its usage cases are specifically to extend DPS uptime in scenarios where you won't be able to hit with other moves, or for specific part break setups where the fixed damage is strong. - A couple nitpicks with SAED Charge Blade. Missing phials from aiming wrong is less of an issue when mastering the weapon and more of a basic problem for less proficient players. The optimisation is positioning yourself properly against the monster's moveset - if you don't have the right spacing and distance, no matter how well you aim in terms of direction, some phials will hit suboptimal hitzones. Also Offensive Guard isn't what makes guard point SAEDs stronger as almost all SAED runs use element phial now - Counter Morph Slash is what boosts phial damage. The part where you say you don't want to always SAED from CPP is outright wrong and misleading - you charge your shield at the start of the hunt, you charge your sword when you can't SAED, but when possible you will always want to SAED after landing a CPP to maximise damage. When you cover CSS style you seem to spend more time going over the moveset additions Sunbreak brought and only briefly covered the playstyle but it's another positioning-heavy playstyle. The keys to optimising CSS apart from positioning are good KO management, and when the monster isn't cced, precise movement and timing - in HCZS' Risen Teostra runs there are times he snuck in CSS swings and cancelled the ticks early to greed some extra damage whilst being able to block in time. - Your initial summary of Hammer is misguided. Hammer is not about powering through monster attacks while charging, with both Courage and Strength styles you spend more time weaving through them - also there are not "a lot of the moves" which are armoured, just Dash Breaker. You don't "use Water Strike to counter any attacks", but you just use it sparingly when required because it's not that powerful of an option, and Hammer has very good mobility that can just allow you to avoid attacks and land charged strikes between them. Almost nobody abuses s from charge mode swapping - Keeping Sway gives s, preserves charge level and keeps you in the preferred Courage/Strength mode. You are correct in saying that optimising Hammer is relatively simple though, it's just headsniping, good movement and KO management - the execution is sometimes very difficult though with monsters such as Zinogre and Anjanath.

On the topic about Crouch shot I think it is very strong (best used with piercing and normal side and ok some other bullets types) because the ability to not needing to reload after shooting for extended period of time as long as you don't hit the overheat gauge is very power because you can switch between needing to crouch shot and normal shooting, and getting out of crouch shooting doesn't leave you completely exposed since you can use your silkbinds or side-step out of most attacks. Granted two of you Evade option are Superarmors and the other is a counter move you will be taking damage in exchange for doing even more damage.

My take on GS is that it's actually pretty difficult to play optimally. It HEAVILY requires monster knowledge to know placement, positioning, and proper timing. Most of the other weapons have some form of unga bunga that can still move out in time when an attack comes it. GS just gets punished hard. Also, the number of times ive seen a TCS miss. Even pros in their livestream can get frustrated when their rhythm is off.
@eivind261093
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with this. I would personally put bow in at least medium, and GS in at least hard; GS has a deceptively simple moveset, but the bigger challenge is the insane amount of monster knowledge you need in order to have any amount of success. I'm by no means a speedrunner, and I'm probably fairly average in terms of skill - but GS is my worst weapon by far. Even after a good amount of practice, it feels like any GS run I try takes twice as long as literally any other weapon.

@eivind261093
Жыл бұрын
@@Mik-kv8xx And you still need pinpoint timing and precision, to a much larger degree than any other weapon. The timing on the counter itself is relatively easy, but the timing to get the optimal amount of damage out of your attack, as well as the timing to actually hit something, as well as the fact that Strongarm is ruined by any multi-hit move, makes it still harder than other options, by far. It's a simple moveset that's more difficult to properly execute than any of the other weapons. And yes, I've played all of them. Proper execution of a GS run turns the monster into your plaything, but with literally all other weapons, you can accomplish nearly the same result - nearly, not quite - with much, much less effort, knowledge, and skill. Now, if you're a speedrunner, or a long-term veteran to the series, you'd likely already have this knowledge, making GS feel deceptively easy to you. But most people by far do not fit into either of those categories, and for those people - the vast majority of the playerbase - GS is going to be one of the hardest weapons to play effectively, if not the hardest.
@Mik-kv8xx

@@eivind261093 your first paragraph is completely insane. The pinpoint precision you are referring to doesn't exist. The center of the blade bonus was removed and hitting something with a HUGE sword is easy. Now, timing. Releasing the button when your sword glows white isn't hard. Now let's talk about multi hit attacks. Imagine you're fighting a malzeno and he raises his wing to do a stab. What do you do? Do you counter straight away? NO. You dodge the first one and counter the second one like a normal person. But wait! There is a second solution! JUST EQUIP THE FUCKING RAGE SLASH. Problem solved. Second paragraph. I hunted dozens of rathians, tigrexes and nargacugas with the SnS. They're my most hunted monsters and the SnS is by far my most used weapon. I optimized the crap out of my SnS runs and my set (embolden guard chop) and I consider myself an excellent SnS player. One day I finally did it, I got a sub 2 minute on a rathian. Then out of curiosity I try to do it with strongarm GS with a shitty unaugmented Scorned set. I got a sub 1:30 on the first try. I'm so salty about that and this weapon that I haven't played it since. Ok I believe you said something about knowledge and maybe positioning. Knowledge, isn't really necessary anymore, all you need is to know which attacks have a small opening after them, that's it. Positioning too has been nerfed thanks to power seathe. Also I'm not a vet, I got into the series not even 2 years ago. Well after Rise released. Bonus point, Strongarm brainwashes players which I think I'm most upset about, when I watch people play this weapon all I see is a dumb fucking house fly flying around doing nothing of value and waiting for a strongarm opportunity. I used to think rage is a very good gs player in base rise, his gameplay was great to watch, but after sunbreak, he's down in the gutter, braindead. That's it, sorry for making it so long I hope you didn't fall asleep like I do when playing bowguns.

@@Mik-kv8xx "Sub 2 minutes" and "1 minute 30 seconds" tells me you are either a speedrunner or someone who minmaxes their runs to the point of being practically a speedrunner. Which makes my entire comment not applicable to you. Like I already pointed out, in the comment you're complaining about. Also, half of your comment is a rant about how you don't need knowledge as long as you have knowledge. That makes no sense. "You don't need knowledge, you just need to know which exact attacks have an opening (which needs to be significantly larger with GS than most other weapons), which exact attacks are multi-hit moves so you don't get hit by the second or third attack after countering the first, and what exactly are the visual cues for these exact moves - and preferably you should know all of this before he even starts the animation, so you can be properly positioned so your attack actually connects." That's knowledge. Which you're claiming is unnecessary. My point about pinpoint precision is referring to the fact that the hit detection of GS is strict; it's a massive but narrow blade, attacking in a downward arch, meaning your 'side to side' margins are very small. If your attack is off by a teeny tiny bit to either side (or, for that matter, you get attacked, or the monster moves, during the massively long animations), you do zero damage, and need to re-do ALL your setup - bug cooldowns, power sheathe, reposition, wait for the perfect attack to counter without being hit by other random moves, and so on and so forth. Which, again, is a problem that's negligible if you have the monster knowledge for it. So not applicable to YOU specifically, but certainly to newer players, and players who would like to enjoy the game without spending an insane amount of time thoroughly studying each monster's moveset in order to optimize every aspect of their gameplay. Don't get me wrong, I think GS is awesome. I love the concept of a slow, hard-hitting weapon. But it is undeniably one of the, if not THE, hardest weapons to get properly good at if you're starting from scratch. And unlike other weapons, there's basically only two levels - you're either godlike, or you're completely useless.

Awakened kinsect attack (or as I like to call it, the Bug Yeet) may feel underwhelming but I find it works best with an assist kinsect and the boosted powder extract. Don’t look at the damage of a single Bug Yeet. Consider the damage of two or three back to back where you refill on extracts in between with the boosted powder. It’s essentially the Insect glaive version of Gunlance shelling, where you get high damage that ignores weak spots (as far as I know, I’m pretty casual compared to a lot of fans but it looks like it does the same thing as gunlance shells). This strat may not be the best dps, but it feels fun to me and I’m sure people can work out how to optimise it better than me. The one thing I’d ask for is that the boosted extract not be collected when you touch it, because you often accidentally pick it up when it first spawns so you lose one of the limited uses per cloud. Maybe make it be picked up by the bug instead where it completely overrides the extract the bug may get afterward when it hits the monster
@TgfkaTrichter
Жыл бұрын
What I hate about Awakened Kinsect is how long it takes and how easy it is to miss it. I am an IG main with over 1k IG hunts under my belt but I never really used the Awakened Kinsect attack. Sacrificing your extracts is one thing but the attack just does not feel good to use imo. If it would be faster and its aiming easier you could think about it, so it isn't worth it. Also the rather low damage does not help it as well. Even with speed kinsects the damage output is rather meh cosindering that it costs all three extracts and is a high commitment and easy to miss move. With assist kinsect you do more damage with Tetraseal ground combos or airial style and powder kinsects have the problem, that Awakened leaves a lot of clouds but does not mark the monster. So to get a nice powder explosion in, which would outdamage the other kinsect options by far you first have to mark the monster without destroying the clouds, while hoping that the monster does not move away or destroys the clouds itself. I am not a Meta player, hell I use powder kinsect, which isn't meta by default (but fun as hell), but Awakened Kinsect is just a bad move. Overall Capcom was not very generous when it comes to new silkbinds for the IG. We talked about Awakened Kinsect allready and Kinsect Glide is completly useless. Thankfully they buffed IG in other way, by giving us new cool Kinsects, buffing Tetraseal Slash, which was useless in base Rise and gifting us with the amazing Kinsect Slash.

Even though I like watching speed runs and also playing monster Hunter I don't like watching monster Hunter speed runs because most of the time monster Hunter speed runs are about keeping the monster as still as possible so you can do as much damage as possible the problem I have with that is that instead of having a good fight where the player kills the monster quickly because they made good decisions during the fight constantly predicting the monsters moves and countering them accordingly the monster is immobilized for most of the hunt and only decisions the speedrunner has to make is how to do the best combo to do the most damage and maybe setting up additional traps to keep the monster immobilized again which to me personally is boring. The types of monster Hunter speed runs I enjoy watching are when the player instead of trying to keep the monster immobilized as much as possible has actual fight with the monster and still kill it fast because they're just that good I find it personally much more visually entertaining as well as intellectually entertaining seeing the player do just the right move at just the right time. The insta-block timing got much more generous and you're not only relaying on spiral thrust for your main damage as the motion values for a lot of your basic moves got buffed as well. There's ofc still runs like Narwa or Chameloes where the skyward thrust is a better option than anchor rage and that adds some variety overall but it's 100% easier to use Skyward thrust correctly then playing around with the jankiness of spiral thrust. Where weapons like charge blade have you memorize a bunch of button combinations for big damage, Lance has you memorize the monster itself. You don’t need to focus as much on “first I press this button, then this, then this” - you need to think “This monster is starting up this attack - where do I need to aim my attacks to be sure I hit the monster in its weakest point while it’s moving?” Watching some lance speedruns is a truly eye-opening experience for many.

Lance has a surprisingly high amount of burst damage with Skyward Thrust... when used properly. When not used properly, it's the most self harm DPS move available. And the key to knowing when a Skyward Thrust is a shining beacon of damage output versus a depressing solo flight into Loser Land? Monster knowledge. And it's a monster knowledge that most weapons never have to consider. How vertical and aligned are the vital areas of the monster during any given animation. Lance, I feel, also suffers the most when attacking smaller monsters. That's when I feel we're reduced to just point and pokes.

One of the most impressive Lance techs is Skyward Thrust's ledge cancel. Basically it's an extremely precise positioning tech where at the end of Skyward Lance's animation you will land right on the edge of a ledge, fall off the ledge and cancel the recovery animation, allowing you to reuse Skyward Thrust or any other move. 4:12 so on the topic of greatsword, you say that landing TCS is the "traditional playstyle," but wouldn't critdraw builds be more appropriate to title as traditional because they have a longer history of play? Before 4/4U, Greatsword started off without charge attacks and eventually had had one which was the overhead slash. In 4/4U the strong charge, horizontal slash, and jumping attacks (no charge) were introduced. Generations had different weapon arts and styles (which are kind of what we see in Rise), this I think was when TCS was introduced but it was more specific to one of the hunting styles if I"m not mistaken. (Feel free to correct me on the history of greatsword changes btw) Greatsword isn't limited to only TCS play is the other thing. Crit/Punishdraw is back and even better (especially when combined with an aerial style after sheathing -> wirebug -> unsheathe charge); Aerial greatsword is still as fun as I remember it being in Generations. It's a versatile weapon that has both safe and risky playstyles with their own set of rewards. This is going to sound like blasphemy from a person who has played Greatsword since 4U as a main weapon, but you don't always have to go for the head. You can also go for the tail or breaking other parts of the monster. Greatsword can get away with not always going for the head/weak parts whereas other weapons like the bow will experience a significant damage drop from not hitting a weak spot that could be detrimental to their play. And I say this because even if I deal white damage on a part my GS gets deflected on, I still see at least 100 damage was dealt (I use a crit/punishdraw build where I don't even have to charge attacks at times, so I spend hardly any time between dealing damage. Mostly I just attack, sheathe, rinse and repeat and occasionally when I can punish a big move I'll do a T3 charge attack then sheathe again. Far from optimal but it's a safe playstyle that works, when each unsheathe no charge slap deals 250+ each time you can kind of just machine gun greatsword for fun). It's not always about doing the max of what is possible, it's about enjoying the game (even though making armor sets and weapons for every weapon can be expensive as fuck). Overall, pretty interesting video.

I don't think Serene Pose is a defensive skill if we are discussing the weapon from a speedrunner's perspective. The current LS meta seems to use Serene Pose as the weapon's main payoff as the wirebugs have shorter cycle and the damage is grouped more tightly, and most importantly do not require a long opening like helmbreaker. I think there is an intermediate level of experience, between casual players and speedrunners, one where a player recognizes the monster's full moveset and is conscious of the options their weapon affords them in response, and this list would make more sense in that context. From my experience within a speedrunning community, discussing weapon difficulty is akin to ranking which Olympic sport is harder, it is just not a very meaningful metric to begin with.

also in note there is a difference between skilled gunners, support gunners,s and casual gunners. DO NOT USE the speed runner gunner build, for the love of Fatalis, please do not copy the speed runner gunner build, these builds are not for casuals I see a lot of speedrunners build in the random hunt only to end up back at camp. every time I see a random hunt with a gunner they often carted because they should know, the gun is not easy to play with, sure you can just point and shoot only to see white low dmg because you don't know where to shoot at. You are multi-tasking crafting ammo, watch the monster combos, and ofc the gunner has a lot of mandatory skills that must have no matter what like spare shots, recoil down, deviation down, and reload speeds. gunner is called glass cannon because we are paper but do a sh*t load of dmg if you know WHERE TO AIM at, there is a time even aiming at the head you do white dmg so try to learn the monster's weak spot.

I think its easy to learn and play the bowguns BUT the difficulty comes in for the armour sets/skills, if you don't look up a guide, or used them in multiple games, it can be extremely hard to know which skills you need, at what level and what skills to prioritise first. That is a large part (at least to me) of Optimising LBG and HBG, so whilst standard play is simple enough, point, shoot, reload, all the timings, critical ranges and deviation changes based on that and you should learn what skill load out works best for you, plus the BG your using.

As an Insect Glaive main, I have to disagree with the recommendation to not use powder bugs. While the assist bugs definitely do a lot more direct damage, the heal/status powder bugs provide some very helpful free status while also giving free healing, the latter of which is, in a way, infinitely more DPS than assist bugs. Remember, DPS while carting and running back from camp is 0, and if the team uses their final faint, that's effectively _negative_ DPS equal to the health the monster had lost (since you have to restart the hunt with the monster restored to full health); defensive and healing skills are badly underrated in a lot of Monster Hunter content here on KZitem, and I think a lot of hunters watching that content suffer for it.

Tbh this is the first ive heard about slide slash. I've mostly been doing complete circles of endless combos around monsters, switching in and out of archdemon and just spamming and weaving about. Its mostly been going rly good for me, especially with lightning/paralyze. The moment the status hits, I Piercing Bind up and just wail away doing as much dps in there as I can before the effect wears off. Then its just rinse and repeat. Often times i keep forgetting when im supposed to capture or kill the monsters... Ends up surprising me when they suddenly die and I'm still in the middle of the piercing bind setup.

This tier list seems more about TA run meta playstyles difficulty than weapon mastery. Weapon mastery isn't limited to play styles, and in my experience It's generally very skilled players who use gimik or off meta styles, because they have the mastery too get away with it. Otherwise cool list, and obviously this all subjective opinions anyway. Couldn't factually make a list of difficulty to master every weapon unless you've done so yourself, though even then difficulty can be subjective.

In all seriousness gaurd dash leaping thrust (plus or minus charged sweep base on context) is the best lance out-of-neutral dps combo rn in sunbreak, you don't really lose dps doing it As someone coming from MHW, lance became a lot more forgiving in sunbreak, you have two infinate guard moves (insta-block and anchor rage), out-of-jail free card and good mobility option (sheathing retreat), and tbh these are not that hard to learn and optimize, at least won't be harder than any other counter moves.

Disagree about Heavy Bowgun . Its OP for speedruns only(or at least when playing in a team) . In a solo normal gameplay , it has very few defence options. Keeping monster KO locked solo is almost imposible. Yes, when you do damage , its insance . When the monster attacks, you are basically a sitting duck(and it will happen unless you are god gamer or hunting low tier trash) . The few defence options available , all make you build your entire gameplay around them more or less.
@pidi6761

i agree with you the heavy bowgun is only avaliable with endgame sets dealing the most dmg and locking the monster in place it is really slow and doesnt have many defense options especially fighting monsters with ranged attacks like valstrax i mean if anyone can kill valstrax the first time with an hr 99 HB set he is simple a god xd

It is true that with some monsters, because os thier movility, its pretty hard to use it properly against them. I have sadly been disliking Greatsword (my "favourite" weapon) more and more in gen 5 It used to be a high risk, high reward weapon where you had to know monster attacks and openings to make the most of your weapons huge attacking power. Then with the introduction of world they added the shoulder tackle a way to negate knockback and reduce dmg to stay in the fight... ok not to bad you can ignore a hit but can still be juggled or killed if not careful we all kinda wanted something like this. Then with the introduction of Rise and the wirebug skills Greatsword began quickly changing from what it once was. Greatsword became one of the most mobile weapon options through use of spamming out Power sheath and Adamant charge slash to zip all round the area with wirebugs, ignoring attacks and buffing your already crazy attack. (I actually like the lions maw hunter art from gen but Lions maw wasnt an evade at the same time, making power sheathe a bit much imo) You can literally use these switch skills to ignore normal movement if you understand the distancing well. This was fun to be fair but got boring for me quickly because it was way too powerful and just didnt feel like greatsword anymore. Then with the introduction of the strong arm counter in Rise the weapon became even more ridiculous able to zip around the map with powesheathe and then use SaS to counter completely ignoring damage and then do more damage than a normal tcs every 3 seconds... this counter was so powerful and affected greatswords new playstyle so much that not long after uncapping my MR I quickly stopped using Greatsword and haven't used it since Slowly over time the greatsword is becoming to easy and boring to use and branching too far away from what made it special in the older titles.
