Calculating the normal stresses on thin-wall spherical pressure vessel is not hard. Here's a description of where the stress expression comes from along with a numerical example.

I don't understand why the pressure acts on the circle of the cut. I would have thought it acts on the same thin area hollow ring on the inside of the circle... Anyone mind explaining?

yes you are right , it gets complicated there you have to consider a small area on which the pressure is acting and then integrate it (considering small element as a ring).
