An interest walk from "splitting the check" to the death of "Indianapolis Bones". In comedy writing, detailed setups that lead to a surprise denouement are called a "Jarvis street transfer", for the Chicago writer (Walter 'Rye' Schultz) who first used the device in Laurel & Hardy's classic "Esplanade of Romp". This film, which was shot on location in Chicago on the grounds of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, used writing styles like the "jarvis street transfer" to reinvent comedy. Our country's best comedy colleges (the best of which is SUNY HA!) were smart to make mastery of the "jarvis street transfer" required learning, and based on the quality of "Splitting the Check" SNL writer's clearly did not skip class to play hacky sack on the quad.

@@skankhunt-wy9wy i gave the abbreviated version of the story. I totally skipped over the jealous writing partner who claimed he was the Jarvis inventor...and I never mentioned anything about how Rye Schultz got so lost in Chinatown opium houses that he had to start over after losing all of his money to a dealer named Dante Rudd Mcgee. Dante's own story was cut short after a failed attempt at a leadership takeover. SNL paid tribute to this in their skit where that weak dealer played by Chris Redd tried to take over the drug empire run by Keenan. Sure you can laugh at the surface jokes...but comedy is so much funnier when you know the underlying stories used by today's comedy writers. Mikey Day's dissertation on Rye Schultz is required reading for any kid who is trying to make it in writing.

That's one thing I liked about Canada. Virtually all the restaurants use the same handheld system that by default splits the check to each individual and what they ordered automatically. They pass it around, you tap it with your card, done. You could even say hey, split this app between X and Y person, done, easy.

Omg yes, my friend group just went some months back and that was so delightful, made things fair, and easier when you factor in conversion rates from CAD to USD.

Owen Wilson as an Indians Jones type character is what we neeeed!
I've totally been in this situation. Met a group of friends for drinks in a hotel bar some years ago. When we receieved the bill we discovered that one couple, who had left early to go home, had added their dinner to our tab. Needless to say they were never re-invited to join our evenings out.

You know, Owen Wilson would make a decent secret agent Hames Fond.

Ok, this sketch is all over the place....and I want more! Let me guess, Dr. Bones is also a surgeon, and he performs surgery on himself after being shot? Bring episode 2!

The pitch session for this had to be interesting. Either that or one of the more reliable SNL writers was just like ‘hey guys, I’ll have something for you by end of day,’ and everyone was like ‘cool.’

Can't believe I have not seen this before. This is, hands down, one of the most brilliant SNL skits ever. Wonderful absurdist writing and performances. And proof why they need to retire the topical cold opens of late and do stuff like this instead.

Look, ending sketches is hard. If you wanna do it with a hard left into utter absurdity, that is 100% fine by me 😂
