I painted my own bike with spray cans. I watched Your videos and got inspired to do it. Right from dismantling the bike piece by piece and then getting the old paint off and spraying primer and the final coat of Satin black. The bike looked super awesome. Thank you! You’re a great teacher 👍🏻❤️

Rank amateur here, if you are like me you may want to read on everyone else this wouldn’t apply to you. Watched this excellent video. I just finished restoring and doing a camo on my 20 year old cruiser bike and would like to add my own experiences in doing this. While this guy is superb and does an incredible paint job all I was after was something to make it nicer then the worn out finish that was on it from the factory, which I accomplished. He used high quality primer and paints and clear coat while I used 4 rust-oleum camo colors for everything which was about half the cost or more. I used rust-oleum over krylon as my research found that it’s a better paint for outdoors that is made up of different chemical compounds. I also purchased the self adhesive sheet for stencils for some 6 bucks that he provided the link to. I used 800 grit sandpaper to rough up the original paint and then coated it with rust-oleum self etching primer for aluminum. I only camouflaged the top tube for an accent and painted the rest of the bike deep forest green. I top coated it with rust-oleum gloss. If you notice at the beginning of his paint job he paints light blue and then finishes with dark blue, the final coat with be the majority of the color of the camouflage. I sprayed with the clear coat like he did and then went to wet sand. The rust-oleum top coat did not hold up well at all to that. It came right off and and scratched up and dulled a lot of the camo so I stopped but it did smooth out the layers (lips) of paint caused by having all those stencils. So then it hit me, I took some cheap artist paint brushes I had laying around, sprayed one of the camo colors onto cardboard, dipped the brush into the paint and painted over the existing patterns. What I discovered along the way was, this is how if I were to do it again I would do the entire camouflage part of the job. Not being a sign maker I printed camo designs on my printer I found on the web, cut them out, put it over the foil traced around them, cut the foil and stuck them on the bike. Even if I just did what he did which was make random patterns with the knife it would still take quite a while. As an option I would suggest spray painting the entire bike one of the camo colors, just get a cheap artist brush and then paint camo designs with the remaining 3 colors directly onto the bike with the brush and forgo the stencils altogether. Cutting out camo designs, sticking them on there, painting, then sticking more on over and over and then having to remove them and then sanding is way more labor intensive. Painting directly onto the bike doesn’t leave the lips caused by the stencils and it’s almost impossible to goof up the paint job due to the nature of camo designs! Additionally, you can see how the camo is coming along and not take everything off like he does and find out you have to much of the last color or not enough of another. Also to note, the stencils pulled up some of the paint in about 5% of the places where I removed them and in very few of the other spots the next coat of paint leaked underneath. Not a big deal but I thought I would mention it. The rust-oleum paint is not meant to be brushed on and in the places I touched up if you are really looking at it you can see it was not as nice as spraying it on. If I had to do this over again I would have purchased a better paint for the hand painting portion but I would have painted the first coat with spray paint. I also would have purchased the clear he was using as I’m sure being a 2 part it’s much better. The end result? From a few feet away 99% of the people would not be able to tell my paint job from his and standing right next to it 95% wouldn’t know the difference. Only time will tell how well after riding for many hours just how well the cheaper paint and top coat holds up as when I’m not riding the bike it’s stored out of the elements and in particular, the sun.

Dude, what an amazing paint job. Thank you for showing how to paint over vinyl and removing it. I tried doing this, but I didn't have a good tool for helping remove the stickers and therefore, the corners or each sticker yucked up the pain job each time. I ride road bike primarily, right now I have a 2021 Specialized Allez Elite Pro and I love it. I recently decided I would like a Gravel bike but don't want to spend a ton of coin on it so I decided on a little project. I am taking an old Specialized Rock Hopper (all steel hard tail and forks) and converting it. I have almost got all the components I will need so I will start breaking it down and getting it ready for painting. After watching this video, I feel I have come away with all the information I need to do the kind of job I want to do, something that looks like it came off the factory floor looking like that. Thank you for this video, I learned a lot :) After clicking the like button, I saw it jump from 3.1K to 3.2K, Glad I am helping :)

I have been following your instructions and removing the paint on my frame over the last month with 400 grit wet sand, but now I wonder if I have taken too long? If I do the whole frame in 800 grit wet sand then prime on the same day will this work around the problem?
