I cannot decide. Both are amazing guitars, the examples are lovely and the player is a brilliant, sensitive guitarist. The cedar guitar is mellower, more serius, a bit woody and rustic sometimes, the spruce is cleaner, a bit more fresh and playful, but this particular spruce guitar has shorter sustain than the cedar guitar. The actual tone also depends of the player's touch. I must note that I've never heard a cedar top guitar with so bright ringing trebles.

In all but one of these demos I preferred cedar (I preferred spruce in the Villa Lobos example, possibly because that's what I expect to hear when I hear that piece). As others have noted, the spruce here sounded dry, a bit thin, and to my ear notably shorter sustain in the trebles. I know this is something that many argue comes with time (I have experience of a spruce guitar opening up nicely), but it's one of these 'gambles' guitarists take on the promise that a guitar will 'some day' get magically better, and I feel is often abused by people selling them. Whether it's spruce or cedar I'd still strongly promote ensuring you connect with the guitar you're trying for what it is now rather than waiting, hoping it will drastically change.

Nice playing! Good selection of excerpts for comparison too. They both sound good, and I'd be happy to own either guitar. I think the excerpts that tended toward a naturally brighter sound because of how they were written sounded better on the cedar. Likewise, those excerpts that tended toward a naturally more mellow sound because of how they were written sounded better on the spruce. It's like the brighter spruce guitar made the mellower tunes sound better and the more mellow cedar guitar made the brighter tunes sound better. It's like opposites attract to produce a better result. The interesting case is what happens when you play a bright sounding excerpt on the brighter spruce guitar. Is it too bright? No, I think it still sounds good, and it seems it's possible to take off some of the brightness with technique so the sound isn't too ping-y. But what about a mellow excerpt on the mellow cedar guitar. Is it too muddy? In this case, yes, I think it does lose some definition and clarity. I think one could compensate by playing with a brighter, clearer articulation, but this might be more difficult to accomplish than taking brightness out of the sound of the spruce guitar. For that reason, I would prefer the spruce as an all-around guitar, although I think they both sound great.

Well, the logical conclusion is that you'd need one of each! Some songs lend themselves very nicely to a more mellow sounding guitar, others to a brighter sounding guitar. I like spruce for its "honky" midrange. It's got attitude. The cedar in these examples, except for the last one for some reason, seemed to have a muted midrange. It almost felt claustrophobic. After that, the spruce felt like I was coming up for air. On the last piece, though, definitely the cedar. Thanks for the comparison and the beautiful playing!

Your performance here is perfect! Great talent. Thank you for this study! I enjoy comparisons, even tho (as with my selection of sterio systems) each will sound "perfect" when not heard side by side. Perhaps the style of music would be the basis for choice? Romantic, historic, sad, mysterious tend to be for cedar while fast, energetic (flaminco) might be for spruce. AS a personal choice, I really like the looks of wood and the wood grains. Cedar usually always gives that while spruce often not so much. Additionally, some modern spruce tops have a "too whitish look" of laminate which is not appealing to me. The sound however is the determining factor always. Please do more comparisons like this. Perhaps same guitars with different strings? Also, perhaps you might establish some "specific criteria" for the industry whereby all comparisons would use the same strings and the same music selection. So that forever we could have more identical comparisons. Playing different music and different strings always changes the basis for comparison. Thanks, again, Cim for this brilliant study and performance!

When listening to this comparison I scrolled down so as not to be able to see which guitar was being played so as not be be influenced by the appearance of the guitar. During the performance on each instrument I would consider my impressions then scroll up to see which guitar was being demonstrated. I always chose the cedar-topped instrument as my favorite. Both are beautiful, however I prefer the cedar for the "sweetness" of the first three strings(E, B, G) and the depth of the bottom three strings (D, A, E). Also, the timbre seems more even across all strings as compared with the spruce-topped instrument. To my ear the cedar lends a fullness and depth to the timbre that is missing with the spruce. I think that if one wants to "brighten up" a cedar topped instrument, they can do so with different strings/tension. As always, it all comes down to the individual musician's perception and favored voice of the instrument. Adi.

I have a Kohno # 10 with spruce top, built in the 70’s. It is a wonderful sounding guitar. I bought a production La Patrie Collection with Canadian Cedar. I played them both, but, not a lot. I had put them both away for over a year. I didn’t play them at all. I decided to get back to those guitars and I was very pleasantly surprised by La Patrie. I bought it new 4 years ago and now it has opened up. It took 4 years for the Cedar top to open up. It has more volume, clarity, harmonics and richer tone. Now I prefer the tone of that Cedar top. I guess Cedar can take a lot longer to open up. But, when it does, you will very much notice it. It will make you think that you have a totally different guitar. As far as the volume, I think the spruce top sounds like it has more. But, it is just that the brilliance cuts through a lot more. That very same brighter tone in the spruce might not let you hear a deeper, darker, richer tone that the cedar might offer you. I mean that is what I have experienced in the last 4!years of owning both tops.

I think Cedar sounds better on slow pieces with interesting articulations as it can blend stuff together and fill the spaces. Spruce is for faster stuff, when you need clarity and focus for precise structures. Cedar can get muddy and blatant, Cedar can get shrill and frantic. OFC you should have both. Compliments to the player, yet I think he prefers Cedar.

For me I like both, 60% cedar 40% spruce. If I had one guitar it would have to be cedar. I am going to get a Spuce guitar to go with my cedar and use both. Cedar is warm and tender. Spuce is bright and lively.. Maybe a little sharp in places. But I like that too. For me one of each please.. As a another gentleman said they suit different music and styles in different ways. I think a good idea is to mention John Williams and Julian Bream. JW uses mostly CEDAR JB mostly SPUCE.. Listen to their duets.. The two players and Spuce / Cedar sound really great together...

Normally I prefer spruce to cedar but in this video I prefer the sound of the cedar. The luthier made this cedar guitar sound bright and clear, there are bell ring sound in high notes

I think Cedar is brighter, but what do I know. I am a drummer. I just bought one of each wood. Cordoba and Takamine. I like both the looks. Wish I could play like you. Getting better. Swapped my Les Paul Standard for a Taylor Acoustic Electric 200 Series in Sunburst. Can't believe I did that but no regrets. These acoustic guitars are addicting. I have Strats and Teles ready to go but I have learned to love acoustic. Never thought I would say that.

I have both a cedar and a spruce guitar. I use mainly the spruce guitar for baroque and music till F. Sor but my cedar for romantic and new music. I prefer though the bells on the spruce guitar - clearer sound. The looks of my cedar guitar is better, I prefer the darker time.

These are both extremely nice sounding guitars. The spruce sounds pretty exceptional for spruce, to my ears. In general, because I like the romantic stuff, I gravitate toward the sound of cedar. For anything with a high tempo, I think it has to be spruce, or it gets a bit muddy.

Spruce has always been my favourite... they say that cedar will alway sound the same. as spruce will age over time.

The dynamic range and note separation of spruce bests cedar every time for me
