Thank-you for this video. I will add it to my SS Norway playlist. I sailed her 4 times in the 1990's and she became a treasured friend. I miss her terribly and never thought I could feel such emotion for a ship. But her beauty, grace and majesty along with the wonderful memories of the fun weeks I spent cruising on her made her easy so love.

This is amazing! You know, I would enjoy sailing on something like this today if it was still around. I much prefer the older smaller ships!

Yes the new ships lack elegance, they are just a hotel on a hull

Thank you for your comment! It needed to be done since there are many videos on youtube of Norway but none fully documenting her final years of service and her untimely demise in 2003 , the new generation must be educated on the past so we can preserve and rebuild our fallen maritime icons and remember a golden era in its final hours and days. These days no one cares about it , I spent countless hours making the anthology series 4 parts long & over 2 hours long combined , it was a labor of love .

Right before my very eyes, they disappeared. The last of the great parade, the massive ocean greyhounds who spent their whole lives plying the Atlantic waters. They still existed in my lifetime but now they are gone...

You John Maxtone-Graham you! :) Thanks for preserving the final years of the France-Norway as only a true maritime buff could.

That's what happens when you don't follow recommended operating procedures of the boiler manufacturers. Fail to follow proper maintenance procedures. Fail to follow proper procedures when lighting off the boilers or shutting them down. They would heat them up too quickly and cool them down too quickly. they also failed to use proper procedures when making repairs. They also failed to properly lubricate the boiler support feet, which were designed to move as the boilers expanded and contracted.Failure to do so over stressed the boilers even more. Which resulted in the explosion. the Norway's boilers had been under going that kind of abuse and misuse for at least a decade prior to the explosion. It was only a matter of time before one of them blew. In fact during inspections after the explosion. It was found the 3 remaining boilers were on the verge of a catastrophic failure.

Are there pictures from the investigation online? Ten years of abuse is a lot for a steam boiler, to wreck four of them is a sin. Then to try and sell the ship for 25 million is a bit much....

35:18 : Wow! And to think whoever was operating this camera had no intention of capturing a boiler exploding. They were probably just wagging it around the harbor committing to tape whatever the lens pointed at, then, boom.. RIP to the 8(9?) crew members in the wrong place when that happened.
