I'm from Florida but lived in STL for two years....I had never seen that sort of abandonment/dilapidation of formerly nice, prosperous areas. That being said.....the real bad areas of STL are isolated almost entirely on the north side of the city, and there's almost no reason to go there unless you live there. The city's suburbs are some of the nicest in the country, and I never felt unsafe really as long as I was in populated areas. Lots of humble, hardworking locals from the 'bad' areas, don't get me wrong, I am mainly talking about abandonment/urban decay and the problems associated with it (drug crime, mainly). The nice, historical neighborhoods of STL are absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth visiting.....STL is FULL of history, a lot more than you'd expect.

Developers and the more unscrupulous types come to North St. Louis from out of town and dissemble the abandoned buildings and houses for the brick. There are some fabulous old houses in that part of town. You can find abandoned 3 story mansions, or giant places that were bought and turned into tenement housing in the 50s and 60s before further falling into disrepair through the 70s to today. Even the smaller, row-style houses had tons of architectural flourishes inside and out. Elaborate masonry work, hand crafted ceramic tiles, inlaid wood. The windows would have been filled with elaborate and beautiful stained glass. But abandoned houses get stripped. For the copper wire and pipes, art work, and brick. It's a wholly unique architecture and artistic styling, from a time when St. Louis was the 4th or 5th largest city in the country, and an economic boom town. Olympics and World's Fair in one year. World and nationally renowned breweries. One of the first professional baseball teams. Half a century later and the population was cut nearly in half. How the mighty have crumbled, brick by brick.

I went to private school, Girl Scouts all within the hood and never felt stuck to stay there. It’s a very unique place.

I was in St. Louis for 30 mins one time. It was last September. I stopped at a BP Gas station on Grand and Broadway. It was the same and different from the life I knew at the same time. I bought alot of gas because I had a long way to go. I saw a Redbone walking towards the hotel. I wanted to watch the Redbone but I said I better get where I'm going. I got back on the expressway southbound, a few exits I got off, drove through the city a little, drove to the Arch, drove to the Rams stadium. OMG downtown was a ghost town compared to my city. Then the 55 was right there, I got back on it back to Chicago. And that's all I know about St. Louis that 30 minutes.

Strong family values and striving to succeed in education are the only things every young black person needs to succeed. It’s a lazy lie and excuse to blame racism. Ignore the hype kids, study hard and love your family and community and you will change the world.

Talent is evenly distributed, oppertunity is not. If you dont think living here will fuck with your life chances move your family here for their formative years and tell me how they get on.

The well is running dry, people. Money spent paying $8000 or more for every kid to be born on the public's dime, then there's WIC, then free medical care, housing allowances, free meals for kids provided by the schools, etc. Really, the underprivileged are pretty damn privileged and not shortchanged when you look at the total benefits package. Schools can't do it all for your kids. Parents still need to parent. There's no substitute for that. As a white urban professional, government has only taken $$$$ out of my pockets and never put anything back until the recent covid stimulus. Hey, just getting married raised my tax bill $3000 annually due to the marriage penalty.

@Pete is never wrong -- The poor districts and inner city schools in PA used to get SO MUCH equipment granted to them by federal programs that they had it parked in the halls still in crates and boxes when I went to high school. No lie.

BS. Every minority group in the US has lived in the ghettos and been through the ringer (read up on the Chinese experience for example) but the big difference in long term success has been education and strong family bonds.
