just fyi..closing off the valve that is pulling suction is bad for your pump..u can lower that vacuum from forming to fast by opening the other valve very slightly, just like u did when u let the air in at the end..this way the pump is still moving air and able to cool itself..but not be under as much vacuum in the chamber

Hey there, good video! Thanks for sharing. I do some of this and have experimented a lot with pen blanks. Heres what Ive found: 1. Lots of dye. I put at least half a bottle of resin-dye in per litre of juice. It needs to be almost black when you look at it. 2. Woods vary hugely. Some stabilise after half an hour of vacuum and 30 mins of soaking, others tale 4 hours of vacuum and 3 days of soaking. 3. Baking takes1 hour. ... 2 hours is too long and you risk baking out the resin. 4. You can rough turn the pen and THEN stabilise it. I didnt think this could possibly work (heat cracking, tube gunking etc) but it does!! Saves you time and juice! (the points 1-3 above refer to blank stabilisation tho)

l can say - you no longer have that vacuum pump huh .. you turned it off wrong .. l've own a vacuum pump for 29 years now... never turn off a vacuum pump off while in a vacuum ... break the vacuum before turning it off .. you need to change the oil in it too

Hi Chuck Thanks for the shout out. The Boston Terrier pen turned out brilliant, I thought I mentioned the first couple of coats of CA before the sticking the nail art on. I must have forgotten sorry. The stabilizing pot looks like a pretty cool bit of kit to have around I might have to invest in one those. Great video. All the Best Tony

If you place a metal gauze over your Pyrex pot, it will pop the bubbles before they overflow or get into the vacuum pump.

Hello I've recently bought a vacuum pump and in the manual it says to change the oil every time after using cactus juice. Do you do this / what are your thoughts?

I have seen vacuum pots that look like that on Amazon. They say not to use them for wood stabilizing. That the lid will crack do to a reaction with the fluid. They even mention Cactus Juice by name. Have you had any problems or did you get a different lid?

Glen Coultas I’d like to know that too. I bought one that says no wood stabilization. But they said a glass lid would work

i just wanted to say the catus juice does not go in the wood while under vaccum. if you think about it the vacuum is pulling air and moisture out of your wood how can the catus juice enter the wood to stabilize it. wood needs to stay in the catus juice for at least 1 day on hard wood up to a week. if you mark your container before you start and let it sit for a day you can see it will go down about 3/8''of a inch. if you want to watch a guy do it right watch jack lore you tube do knife handles. i did it the same way you did until i watched him. nice pin thanks

First time seeing something like this. A quick amazon search shows that the resin is really expensive. Do you get it locally? Can you reuse it?
@ITurnTwo

Nick Chambers unfortunately i have not had the chance to work a local source. you can probably get from ebay or amazon. i have purchased from both turntex.com and woodturnerscatalog.com. you can definately reuse the product. i think it is a 6 mos shelf life once you add the catalyst. i probably got at least 7 or 8 reuses out of the last 1/2 gallon. good luck.

Harry Watts Thank you for the feedback. I have found stabilizing to be an easy process that can provide a lot of interesting blanks with spalted and "rotting" wood. Good luck.

I've been turning for a little over a year now and I want to expand in to stabilizing wood and acrylic. Great Video!! I don't typically do back flips, but that Boston Terrier made me do one!! My wife and I have a Boston Terrier and the nail art is already on it's way!! What a FANTASTIC idea!! My wife is going to flip when she gets it!!

Michael Milano Thanks for the input. I found the smaller the nail art the better it blends into the pen. the larger pieces tend to "stick out". cut as close as you can to the image. I used a very small hobby scissor. Its a slow process and i applied 32 bostons to my wifes pen. good luck and please let me know how it turns out. Bostons are a great dog, Mrs. T has a house full of them,
