While I think you are right about what most Americans need to worry about, I think you are wrong about what they actually worry about. You are looking at the big picture too much. Most Americans are worried about whether or not they are going to have enough money to buy medicine they need so they can continue to work. They worry about if they can work and pay for childcare and if they can afford to buy gas and groceries after they pay for someone to take care of the most important people in their lives. They are worried about whether or not they can afford to get their child who is graduating from high school a gown and cap so their child won’t be embarrassed because they are poor. They are worried about how they are going to get enough money to wash their clothing at a laundromat. They are worrying about what they would do if and when their car breaks down. They are worried about not being able to pay their rent. They are worried about the empty beer cans they found in their kid’s bedroom. They are worried about their kids grades, friends, being bullied for their differences. Not an exhaustive list, but you see the difference in what you are suggesting. What Trumpers get from Trump is the same thing that they got from soap operas - a relief from their own problems for a short while. Trump’s problems become more engaging than their own and thus more interesting and attractive. His consuming self-interest engenders a weird me-too empathy.

I am also concerned about the muted mic, not only because viewers won’t see Don’s nastiness & aggression, but also because Joe will hear him going on & on. He will say quite provocative & awful things to enrage Biden, such as bringing up Hunter, a low blow that almost made me cry when you replayed last debate.
