Casey Jacobsen banked in the game-winning basket with 3.6 seconds left and scored 26 total points as the #3 Stanford Cardinal defeated the #1 Duke 84-83 Blue Devils after trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half of the 2000 Pete Newell Challenge at the Arena in Oakland.
Duke, who would go on to win that season's national championship, led 72-57 with 6:53 to play before Stanford took advantage of the Blue Devils' foul trouble and mounted a comeback, scoring points on all 14 of its final possessions.
With Shane Battier, who scored 17 of his 26 points in the first half, on the bench with four fouls, Stanford was finally able to use its superior size and depth to take over in the paint, with twin brothers Jason and Jarron Collins leading the way. Jason posted a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, with Jarron adding 14 points and 6 rebounds. Battier fouled out with 35.7 seconds in the game, with Carlos Boozer (4 points) having already fouled out at the 4:45 mark.
Jason Williams was stellar for Duke, scoring 26 points and dishing out 5 assists. He caused headaches for Stanford's point guards, causing Mike McDonald to foul out. Julius Barnes, who played extensively due to McDonald's foul trouble, provided the defensive highlight of the night when he rejected Williams' dunk attempt with 7:34 left in the game.
The 2000 Pete Newell Challenge was the second meeting between Stanford and Duke, with the Cardinal having beaten the Blue Devils 80-79 in overtime the previous year in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic the previous year at Madison Square Garden. The two men's basketball programs haven't played each other since the 2000 Pete Newell Challenge.
