Me and my sister each had one of those "The Force Lightsabres" in the 70's, and what I actually did as a young kid, was, I realized that the inside was like a flashlight. I had a couple of old flashlights from Cub Scouts and I took them apart, and I taped the insides into the hilts so that the bulbs pointed up the lightsabers so that they lit up in the dark. I moved the swiches down to the bottom of the handle. It was worthless in the daylight, but it was fun to sword-fight in the driveway and in the yard at night. Also, back in the early 2000's, I used to work at Staples. Our back room manager came back from his break with a lightsabre on his belt. We were like, "Where did you get that?". He was like, "Oh. The toy store in the plaza across the street is closing and clearancing them off dirt cheap!". So every, single, one of us, who worked in the back of the store, went over there and bought a lightsabre. Then... for the entire rest of the work day... whenever customers weren't around... we were Jedis. You would be straightening an asile.. and it would suddenly get quiet... too quiet... and you would slowly reach for that sabre at your belt... grab it.. whip it up.. and immediately deflect a blow that was coming at your head from the ambush, ***KISH!!!*** ***WHUM!!! WHUMM!!!*** ***KISH!!! KISH!!!*** and this crazy battle would happen in the aisle. There was this moment when this utter Jedi brawl broke out in our back room. There was about 10 of us, in this massive sabre duel with all the sound effects and sword flashes... And suddenly we all stopped... Our general manager was standing at the door, just staring at us with this... VERY blank expression on his face, completely frozen. He then.... just shook his head, very slowly. He backed out of the room VERY slowly, and closed the door. And we didn't see him again the entire day.

Tbh, my favorite lightsabers as a kid were the basic ones(back when they were solid and only had three handle variations). Like yeah, they were chunky and inaccurate, and didn't light up or have sounds, but they were functional for both swinging around AND dueling(I'm talking prequel hardcore). I mean, the ones that light up are nice, but you could barely see the lights during the day, you could hear the clunking of blades past the sound effects, and if you dueled too hard, you'd dent your blade and make it look bad. The basics cut the crap of lights and sound effects, and were durable enough that it took a while to break them. The damage you got from dueling was white with dents rarely happening, so you could write it off as the energy of the lightsaber.

Im a 90's kid. So that green Luke Skywalker blade was so rad when it came out. Even today I see that red box and those gold bindings I feel....here comes that word I cant stand to use anymore... Nostagicccccc. Ahhhh. Yea but I do. I was around 9 when these toys were being released and Star Wars was making its BIG 90's comeback!!! I was that Star Wars kid at school. I got made fun of and the girls completely put me in the nerd/dork category every time I brought a Star Wars Insider to school. I remember the week the magazine changed its name from Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine to Star Wars Insider, and the first issue of 'Insider' was released. Mom brought me to the post office and this dork/nerd sent in his subscription. This era was not so dark for Star Wars fans. It was a time of great imagination and hints/lore of whats to come. Im getting off track, I could go forever. I always wished for a fully retractable lightsaber. Back in this era I would always say to my friends. 'Why cant they just hide the last part of the tubing?" I remember trying to hollow out the green blade and see if I could push down the base. Never worked and that became my blade-less side holster. I for some reason always dressed as ROTJ. Until I ordered my official Bespin jacket out of the Star Wars Insider catalog section and came to my senses. I took some big leaps and changes from 9 to 12 in my Star Wars decision making. Yes so it took 24 years for them to go.... (Kenner/Hasbro): 'Oh guys... you know we can make a saber that goes like this. You know, kinda works like those 3rd party knock off ones that are fully retractable. Ours would be way better considering we got all the resourses and people and tech to make a decent accurate version...Oh and yeaaaa... MILLIONS OF DOLLARS!!!!" Iam very happy with this TOY. Thank the lord it arrived. Hopefully they will make more handles. Or a line of toys accurate detailed sabers. Please dont wait another 24 years. Please. If this is all we ever get. Then Iam 100% satisfied. Well 99%...Iam 32 now Hasbro. Could you pick up the pace on cool toys like this!!! Um... get your playset thinking helmets on! (Iknow the Jabba stuff is very impressive!)

That was one of the few toys I DIDN'T get from the first Star Wars toy wave!!!! I have replica prop hilts from Master Replicas (and an Icons Obi-Wan ANH hilt plus an independent company ROTJ Luke hilt) but I've NEVER had a lightsaber with an actual blade and/or sound effects! I've played with them in stores but restrained myself from buying the Master FX line because I felt I'd waste too much time playing with them and that I was WAY past any chance of cosplaying, not that I was EVER that geeky about my fandom!!! I had a remote controlled Kenner R2-D2 but those things were made with crappy parts and I wore out the wheel motors very quickly. At least that's what I think -- or maybe my parents let me think that and just didn't replace the batteries and threw it away because they got sick of hearing me play with it. Anything's possible. Parents can be cruel like that! If I were going to spend $500-$1000 on something decent that was mass-market and electronic, I'd probably get a 1/4 to 1/2 scale R2-D2. He's still the neatest robot design I've seen in my entire life.

I had the "Power of the Force" Darth Vader saber as a kid. Also had to get the Darth Vader mask that had a voice/SFX box connected to it that you could hang on your belt. The mask had a tiny mic inside that would down-pitch your voice through the voice box as well as having the option to have Vader's breathing constantly on loop while talking through it. I didn't like how the 1995 saber didn't retract all the way, either, but it was the best I had. Retracted, and lit up, it kinda looked like a theater guiding stick theater workers would use to guide people into the theater and to their seats, lol.

It's a shame that after all these years there still isn't a definitive toy saber. I'm personally fond of the flick out sabers that didn't light up due to my personal reasons of D batteries cost a lot and my Qui Gon saber seldom knew what being on looked like. Still though, that one from Hasbro looked like it showed a lot of promise as a fully retractable, spring loaded, light up lightsaber. Sad it was a dud at the end.

Damn. That last one was doing so well. It had everything you would want in a lightsaber toy. Spring loaded blade that shoots out of an accurate handle with synchronized lights and sounds. It looked magnificent. But then it jammed and all of the sudden you realized it only has a single time play value before it breaks. After that, it’s worthless. None of its pros mean anything anymore. Its main gimmick, a spring loaded blade, is gone, you can’t play with it anymore, so it doesn’t work as a toy, and with that blade piece just sticking out, it doesn’t work as a replica, blade extended or retracted. Not only is it a bad toy, but with all previous savers having more than just one time play value, it might actually be the worst one painted to look like the best.

I always retracted my 90s Force FX toy sabers one segment at a time, using two hands. But then, I was 15 in 1995, and maybe I was just overly cautious. If Hasbro doesn't recommend this method in the instructions or on the packaging of this new saber, it is a fail in that respect, however I can't imagine engineering a plastic toy incorporating an extendable/retractable sword blade that won't have the potential for getting jammed. At least, not at a mass-market price point.

I had he "Force Beam" orange handle lightsabre when they first hit our local Co-Op department store in Scotland. They were sold in a huge floor display box with the handles sticking up. I know it looked nothing like an on-screen lightsabre, but in reality it didn't really matter. It looked really cool when lit up outside on a dark night and if I remember, it was really quite robust. It also made a great accessory to my Palitoy Han Solo pistol, and the Storm Trooper rifle with the rotating barrel that looked like a barber shop pole :)

When I was about 10 years old , I made a 'saber out of an old paper towel tube , cut to length and angle like Luke's, put About 3 lights out of my Millennium Falcon model in it , hooked it up to a homemade switch made out of a metal piece and some tape hookeo to a 9 volt battery, covered it very carefully in inside out foil, and took some old windshield wiper rubber strips for handles. This was right after Empire, earlier I had gotten one of those balloon Jokers, and needless to say, it didn't last 'till the water got hot! The one I made didn't have a noticable blade or sound , but my friends were VERY impressed. I ended up making 10 or 12 of them with different colors (I painted the lights with opaque paint, I even made my cousin Penny a PURPLE ONE! And this was back in 1981! ( Purple was her favorite color!), Anyways, keep up the good work , you and Melinda are keeping nostalgia alive, and I for one deeply appreciate that!😎

Great video as always! I've always been surprised by how long it took Hasbro to make fully retracting electronic lightsabers. That foot-long blade chunk lived a much longer life than it should've.

With all these videos popping up about lightsabers at that new Disney Star Wars Galaxys Edge place, would be awesome to see your take on it and if you two could go and give us your take on it :)

Hi Michael, I really enjoy your content! Thanks for making stuff that's fun and informative to watch. It really doesn't seem like a quality toy lightsaber is in the cards, huh? Have you looked into the DIY saber community lately? They're not mass retail toys, but they're getting achingly close to the sabers we've seen on-screen for so many years. The prices have come down considerably, and while they're still not what I'd consider cheap, they're far more affordable than they were in the early to mid-2000s when the DIY saber movement began. I'm sure you'd be able to commission a talented sabersmith to assemble your Skywalker Graflex lightsaber.. without having to sell a kidney. Thanks again! Love your show!

You forgot the other lightsaber with the locking saber that went all the way to the hilt and wasn’t chunky, from the prequels.

Sometimes being a deprived child works to your advantage. When I was a kid, I had the Force Beam knockoff saber. It had clear plastic discs you could swap out, and you could have red, blue or yellow, and even could combine them to make green and blue. Years before the PT, Power of the Force, or what have you. It literally wasn't until a couple years ago I realized they were knock offs and not official LFL licensed sabers, but as a kid, I was happy with mine, anyway!

I still have my spring action Vader lightsaber. My brother has Luke's. I still remember dueling in our garage with the door down and the lights off. They don't work anymore (I think it's because the batteries were corroded) I tried to clean them out with vinegar and a qtip, but no luck, still won't turn on.

I had the red lightsaber from the 70's-80's, not sure how it lost the whistle on the tip, my cousin had the yellow one (because some stupid necessity from my uncle of giving him the same toys as me on holidays), then I think the blade part was lost, I always wondered if the hilt was always supposed to be that gigantic.

Always wanted to know if the force lightsabers I saw advertised back in the day (specifically those adverts packed in with other toys) were intended to make noise, AND what that noise might be. Thanks for clearing up an age old question for me. (Also, it should be noted, I subscribed due to the Jan 2020 High Council)

If I’m being honest the electric light saber that has a little bit of blade length from 1995 it’s actually the handle that is a lot more accurate compared to the Hasbro ones because the brown piece is really thin just like the one in the movie well compared to these new Hasbro ones it’s really thick and it’s the same length as any other Lightsaber toy
