I thoroughly wash the rice 3 or 4 times then I add about 5 or more cups of water and switch on the rice cooker and let the rice boil to release the starch. I then strain the rice and put back the rice to cook. The rice cooker will switch off once the rice is ready. I use a normal rice cooker.

Very nice unit, although 37% removed is really not much at all...remember, you can only wash, and wash, and wash over again and remove "maybe" up to 70% starch at best, but from the exterior of the kernels only. Each kernel is composed of at least 60% starch of it's weight still inside.

The cooked rice seems to stick at the bottom of the rice cooker. Also, I assumed that the accumulated water in the pan comes from the steam below. How can steam carry starch with it in the air? I also think that this is just another gimmick. Thoroughly rinsing your rice before cooking it would remove more starch than this small kitchen appliance.
@anchored555
5 жыл бұрын
Beau Ly Rice sticking to the bottom is unavoidable because the pot is stainless steel without a nonstick coating. I actually prefer it that way because I try to avoid cooking in nonstick pots because I’m not sure if chemicals from the coating get leached into my food. Also, I had the same doubt you did whether steam can carry starch. Unfortunately, La Gourmet doesn’t do a very good job of explaining how their process works. What I suspect happens is that the starchy rice water boils up (like when you cook rice in a saucepan) and is trapped in the upper bowl, so it’s not condensed steam. I just bought this rice cooker, and the water collected in the upper bowl on the Low Starch Rice function is definitely starchy rice water. I did rinse my rice a few times till the water ran clear, before cooking it, but the water collected in the upper bowl was still cloudy with starch. So I think it does work to reduce the starch in the rice, but I’m not sure by what percentage.

In the old days we have been cooking low starch rice without realising. We put plenty of water with the rice just like if you are cooking porridge. If we want rice just simply remove excess water with a laddle once the rice is almost cooked. Some people drink the rice water as soup.

Works great if you pay attention to instructions. kzitem.infoUgkxviiltW7NlHbp_VL_bLbIkbLAvILVhnia For those that complain about "mushy" or "wet" rice I suspect they are using the included cup to measure rice (which is really only 3/4 cup) and then putting in water using a separate measuring cup that is a full cup. This results in too much water and you will get mushy or wet rice and think it is not done. Just use the included cup for both rice and water, or your own measuring cup for rice and water according to your package directions. It will come out fine. I've used mine for years for brown and white rice. If your machine is bubbling white froth out of the steam vent then it means you should have rinsed your brand of rice first to remove some of the starch. Sheesh. Makes me wonder how people can cook well enough to feed themselves.

Washing the uncooked rice in a full metal kitchen strainer (the type you use for flour) under streaming water until the water stays clear, helps too. Shaking the strainer so the rice scrapes against the metal, helps remove the starch.

I dont think so its healthy. Because the 1.normal water we use in rice cooker is 1 cup rice= 1 and half cup water. 2. La gourmet need 1 cup rice = 2 and half cup water. Which is higher than normal use of water and the water trapped is just less then extra 2 cups you used. Which mean Its still absorbed more water (starch) than usual.

so i am guessing the other low carb rice cooker method where instead of steam catcher like this one and instead cooking the rice in a steel steamer basket while letting the starch water stay bellow the steamer basket rice cooker is more effective since this one only does 37% while the other method at minimum is 40% and can go up to 57% of starch removal and you get a giant stainless steel steamer basket as well... well this is helpful and informative as well... thanks for the video....

i have a similar one by yumasia, it works by boiling the rice to start which dissolved the sugar/carbs in the water, this is normally reabsorbed into the rice, but because the rice is suspended, once the water boils away it switches to steaming the rice, and the sugar water is left behind and nor reabsorbed.

Hi Roland, I actually bought this rice cooker only after watching your demo. Indeed, for the Low Starch Rice setting, the water collected in the upper bowl is cloudy with starch so it definitely does remove some of the starch that would otherwise be absorbed by the rice. What the manual didn’t mention was whether the aluminium plate with silicon gasket under the pot lid can also be removed for cleaning. I am concerned about this as it could collect dirt. It doesn’t seem to be easy to remove, and I didn’t want to use force in case I broke it. There is a steam knob in the top of the cover that comes out easily for cleaning, but the plate under the lid seems to be fixed. For most rice cookers, that plate can be removed for washing. Do you know whether the aluminium plate under the cooker lid can be removed for cleaning or is it fixed and you can only clean it by wiping? Many thanks for your help.
@spicenpans

Hi Anchored. Thanks so much for watching our video :-) I’ve just checked with La Gourmet and they confirmed that the aluminium plate can’t be removed. You can only clean by wiping. Please use warm cloth to clean it in order to have better result - according to them. Hope this helps.

So, if all it is doing is keeping the rice separate from starchy water----couldn't you just achieve the same result by doing the boiling method to cook rice? I mean cook rice in 5 times as much water as it needs, boiling til the rice is cooked and then straining the rice (leaving the starchy water behind)??? And, is there are actual data that proves rice cooked in this cooker is less starchy, therefore being better for diabetics? Or, does the company just make the claim with nothing to back it up?
