Before people start crying, this service isn't for personal users. Its for the commercial users of seas who need internet. Where they are paying $200,000 PER MONTH for shoddy 25 mbps speed with 500-2000+ ms latency. SpaceX themselves were paying their old VSAT $165,000 per month for their rocket landing droneships. The old VSAT customers pay $2000+ per month for DIAL UP 128Kbps speed. If they want to pay for 2 Mbps, thats $4000+ month. If you want 25Mbps, that's $20K+ per month. Then there's monthly bandwidth limits, which means if you're in business of transmitting or using lots of data, you have to pay well into $100K+ as they charge $1 PER MB. $5K per month for unlimited 350Mbps, low latency is perfect for any of the commercial passenger cruise ships, oil rigs, research vessels, cargo vessels, military vessels, etc. For personal uses, RV starlink may work temporarily. Its not durable and isn't meant to handle sea salts yet. A rugged starlink for personal use may come or may not, you might need to modify the starlink to protect it from sea salts.

Great update, thanks! This is massive progress and great development. It's early stage technology, so understandable it's expensive now. Let's see where they are in 12-18 months

Their regular service is about $110/month. So when Chis implied it was expensive, the numbers of $130 and $150 were running around in my head, and I was thinking "sure, it'll be tough, but I can swing that!" Hehe, I was, uh, a bit off.

Gotta admit.. we were fully anticipating a higher price for the global marine market. But not that much higher! We were thinking more in line with the business service, maybe $500/mo.

Hardware cost is comparable with "traditional" maritime setups from the likes of ViaSat, Inmarsat, etc... but the monthly cost, and data bandwidth/performance, from StarLink is literally orders of magnitude better.

It depends on where you’re going. Around the Bahamas and South Florida that’s total crap. Yes for satellite Internet access you are correct, but you can get almost continual bundled unlimited 5G and Wi-Fi here in Fort Lauderdale that works at least throughout the Bahamas for way less than that a month. Probably less than $500 a month. But then many fools have bought Teslas also. And I can tell you from having been picked up in them many times to be taken to the Brightline train station here, they are the absolute worst riding cars I have ever been in in my life. Moreover, they rattle. I guess it’s because of the 5000 pounds of toxic waste sitting at the bottom of the car on its floorpan (i.e., the batteries).
@5thGenNativeTexan

@@haroldfletcher5493 I think you misunderstood my comparison. I'm talking about commercial grade satellite internet that's currently sold for large yachts, ships, etc, which typically cost around $10K per receiver and then can be tens of thousands of dollars per month for the data service. Thus, that's why the maritime version of Starlink is about 70% less cost than other existing providers. Now, for many boat owners who are just looking for good internet, this won't be the service they're looking for.

Yeah, it's gone from insanely expensive to just ridiculously expensive. It would be pretty silly to spend $60k/year for internet on my $60k yacht. Glad it's a good deal for you and your mega yacht owning friends, but us little guys are still priced out of the market and apparently Elon has no intent of changing that.

I worked as an IT support for oil rigs they have 1 to 3mbs at sea that most of the times does not work, this are not for ordinary consumers, these are for container ships, warships, cuise ships, oil rigs. And yeah rich people, but it changes the industry for private companies who works at seas.

why would the hardware be any different? . Suspect a regular starliink or RV type would work fine. Especially when perched in port or at anchor. Perhaps with artificial AREA limitations. We'll try to find out; have a system on order. We're not a megayacht.

Elon, that price is effing nuts. You’re not talking to somebody with a center cockpit with three 350 hp engines on the back, I’ve got a 50 foot Jeanneau DS sailboat. And I wouldn’t pay you $5000 a month. I don’t pay $5000 a month from my law office. And the only reason I really need Internet on the ocean is to conduct business with my clients, none of which live anywhere near me due to my weird area of law practice. Besides, the comment about The pricing being comparable to other services is total BS. In Fort Lauderdale there’s a company that specializes in offering you unlimited 5G and Wi-Fi connections bundled throughout at least the Bahamas, for well less than $500 a month. They will give you close to the same download speed, certainly relative to the needs (even the needs of a practicing international tax lawyer) of a couple on a sailboat. I can practice international tax law with no issues at 100 MB a second download I don’t even need that much. Who in the hell needs 350 Mb a second? Only a cruise ship or an airliner. Of course, at least when the next high season starts in the winter, you’re likely to install some of that outrageously priced crap on the mega yachts around here, but not with me.
