You just have to admire the very few things that are made without planned obsolencence. Aviation and millitary are the only places left where they make things as good as they possibly can, and not to be spent fast and thrown away for profit. Russian helicopters(yes I know it's made in Poland) are the only ones still flying in many parts of the world where they have no chance of living up to the manual, and treat them almost like an old car. Of course they fall out of the sky once in a while, but you'll be amazed to see what's actually still taking off in some remote places, like the Himalayas or the African jungles. Incredible machines.

I work in aviation, to start a turbine after sitting out in the weather after 20 years is not a good idea, for the helicopter. Helicopters are inherently dangerous when neglected, bearings, swashplate, Hydraulic rust on the rams getting into the seals and valves, just to much to go wrong. It should be dismantled and inspected first and all fluids changed and lines purged. All critical electrical connections should be disassembled and inspected as well. But it was interesting.
@walterF205

Takes more than a few days to do the kind of repairs needed. It could take weeks with the right crew and equipment. At a minimum the engine should be replaced, lines purged, electrical connections cleaned and tested. As I said I still work in aviation and have worked on helicopters, as well as jets. Helicopters are very unforgiving in flight even when something simple goes wrong. However your answer is reasonable one for someone who doesn't work in aviation though. Best Wishes n Blessings Keith

Aviation is not a forgiving business when you can die in a fiery helicopter or plane crash, along with innocent people on the ground. Not trying to be mean, just stating the real facts. I'm actually a very forgiving and kind man. But when in comes to aviation when I see something being done haphazardly I always point out the dangers of people doing dangerous maintenance. Best Wishes n Blessings.

I've been flying helicopters for more than 40 years and it really doesn't look good to see excessive flame and smoke coming from a turbine engine on a start. Of course, I am taking into account that the engines may have had residual oil in them and perhaps the fuel controllers may be a bit out of adjustment, but still, that is a fairly lengthy duration for the fire and smoke that came out of this engine. I sure hope they did not "smoke" the hot section of that engine as that kind of mistake is very expensive to repair.

THEN turn on alternator... then after about 5 seconds and your blades slowly Start to spin... you throttle Up a LITTLE.... then start switching on your radio, avionics, and GPS, etc

"Repairing small things"... Yeah sure. The fuel sitting in the lines would have separated, eaten all the pipelines, seals etc. The white smoke on start up suggests inhibiting fluid, which means the aircraft would have been put into "long term storage". To then be able to start up an aircraft after being inhibited, would require significantly more work than "a few small repairs"

Whoops...almost. :-) This is one of the newer NOHROR "no head rotor" choppers. Rather impressive technology for its age....

+C Roberts And the better part of that technology is that the main rotor does not even need to be rotating. I think that was a breakthrough for the time.

I learned how to say "left" and "right" in two languages here! I presume all the labels are in Dutch?? So many switches. I'm an ex helo pilot myself.

The switches are labeled in Eastern-European (presumably Polish), but the added white stickertags that you can see above some switches are in Dutch.

I am not in the aviation field but I work in the maritime industry. Would a pilot use the terms "left" and "right" or "port" and "starboard?"

That ammount of knobs, lights and switches in planes and helicopters are a nonsense mess! when will they invent a helicopter with a single switch FLY - NOT FLY?

For the same reason that humans aren’t either ALIVE or DEAD, and for the same reason that the weather is not all either RAINING or NOT RAINING. Reality is a little bit more complex than that, and the man-machine interface must capture that - otherwise it’d be a lie. Even cars have lots of knobs lights and switches that are hidden behind a service interface, so you don’t see them and the manufacturers don’t physically install them in each car, but you get all those in diagnostic software you run on your laptop or scan tool attached to the car. And sometimes the fact that those are all hidden out of sight is a problem, since most humans are better at pattern recognition than software is. If you had all the warning and caution lights and diagnostic displays in the car, and weren’t silly, you could easily discern that eg. a fuel pump circuit current gets out of whack when it’s very cold. That’s valuable information, and not all in-car software is good at capturing it so that someone can later review the data. You can look at any “simple” subsystem in the car - say the brake system - and there are dozens of fault monitors and variables that you could certainly wish to look at in real time and be assured that nothing is borderline and you won’t get an ABS/BRAKE light halfway into your upcoming cross-country trip. Car manufacturers spend a lot of money to develop failure prediction algorithms so that you don’t need a qualified human to view all the lamps and gages in real time. But even then, the car’s computers don’t know your intent: they don’t know you’re leaving on a long trip and need to depend on the car. So if they were to signal a fault because they predict that something will fail in 2000 miles, most people would be complaining that it’s “ridiculous” and “a scam to get their money”. So, again: reality is not black and white. There’s much more to a helicopter’s state than “FLY - NOT FLY”, just as there’s way more to a car’s state than “DRIVE - NOT DRIVE”. Sure, the car manufacturers have to pander to the lowest denominator and hide all the complexity away because some part of the public would be highly phobic to learning what any of it means. But for those of us who are not idiots, the extra information would help making informed maintenance decisions, as well as inform our changes in our driving technique if a fault develops yet the car has to be still driven. It’s not good that it’s all hidden away - it’s more of an insult to intelligence. Well, certainly you don’t seem to mind though :(
