I ran out 4 days ago and my refill has not arrived yet. I am already having improvement in memory issues and sleep disturbance. I will probably not be resuming it.

I was prescribed atorvastatin for mildly elevated cholesterol. I did not develop the more common muscle aches. Instead I gradually started having severe indigestion, frequent heartburn, pain in stomach, broken blood vessels in my feet, and other seemingly unrelated symptoms. After 18 months, I became severely ill with hepatitis, jaundice and hemolytic anemia. The prescribing doctor started running multiple tests and trying to blame my problems on one cup of coffee per day and occasional glass of wine with dinner. At my worst, I dropped 10 pounds in a week, no appetite, and couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs. After 4 weeks, she realized how sick I was and I was admitted to hospital where I was treated by a hematologist, infectious disease doctor, and cardiologist. All had their own theories and treatments for me. I did some research and decided to stop atorvastatin against doctor’s orders. I immediately started to feel better and 10 months later have regained most of my energy. Doctors still recommend that I take a statin, just a different one. My answer is NO, NEVER AGAIN!

True quality of life is more important than quantity of life. Last week I just went and had a blood test and everything was good except for my cholesterol, it had gone up a fair bit as the last 6 months I had increased my consumption of meat and eggs. Doctor suggested statins and I said I would not take it. I would just modify my diet I would never take it, he wasn't happy. I am not going to be manipulated or bullied into taking something I don't want to take. You have to stand your ground.

I got my cholesterol level fairly low and I ask the doctor to get me out of my statin and he said "no". I went ahead and cut my 40 mg down to 20 mg and if my cholesterol remains low, after a year, I'm taken myself off statin and wait for my next blood test. Sometimes, doctors do not pay too much attention to your health. You are just one of many patients. I'm still taking Xralto for my Afib and Metoprolol Succinate for my blood pressure and heartbeat. I was put on statins and other drugs for over 20 years and still had 2 more heart attacks, 12 stents and 2 endarterectomies. One day I just made up my mind to quit all meds, get off sugar, alcohol, grain and processed food. I felt great after about a month. Dropped 30 lbs in two months, waist down by 2 inches. Had a blood test and cholesterol was thru the roof, 400+. Dr insisted on stats again and I finally agreed to only statin but none of the others. I now feel sluggish, put on weight, headachy, and generally fatigued. One more blood test in about two weeks only because I made the deal with doc, then I’m off again. I’m not convinced cholesterol is a problem if I live a clean lifestyle.

Wow. I was having pain in my upper arm, thought I had torn a ligament or ruptured muscle. I quit my statin and it went away. Until I saw this video, I never associated that pain with the statin. I worked in a hospital chemistry years ago, and did chemistry profiles, including cholesterol. The high normal was 300. As soon as statins were developed, the high normal got dropped to 200, in order to sell their new drug. Always keep that info in mind when making your own decisions about your meds. I am a retired RN and I can assure you that our Healthcare system is not about making people well, there is far more money in keeping the population sick. It is ALL about the $$$$$.

After two years of high LDL a doctor finally scared me into taking Rosuvastatin 20 mg once a day. All of my other diabetic tests came out perfect. My HDL was 84, triglycerides 82, Blood pressure 118/80. My feet look great. I am not overweight. I eat keto carnivore. Immediately after the first pill I felt spacey. I was driving home and it’s as if I’m here then a few yards later I’m here missing part of the drive. Then my knee started aching. I’m a 1.5 Diabetic with a CGM. My previous dexcom G7 tracking showed my blood sugar was always level between 80 and 135 for several months. Then after starting the statins my blood sugar was all over the place. Never below 125 mg/dl. Had to start taking more insulin. Then one night at bedtime my heart started feeling like it was going to shoot out of my chest and it was fluttering like crazy, The next afternoon I could feel my heart fluttering and I stopped taking the statins. I was on them for two weeks. It’s been six weeks since I stopped and The heart pounding fluttering at bedtime started up again. And both my legs ache 24/7. Not just the knees but the entire legs. So one night I got up to take some aspirin for the legs and I noticed it calmed my heart down. Next night same thing so now I just take two baby aspirin every night before bed. Sent a text message to my doctor and I’ve gotten the silent treatment. I was taking 100 mg two times a day of CoQ 10 while on the statins. I have read that this leg pain can either go away in 7 to 10 months, or it could be permanent, or I could end up in a wheelchair. I also read that people who have leg pain that liver and kidney damage that goes along with it.!🤬 I’m sure if I ask my doctor what’s happening to this extra insulin in my body that’s not being utilized tthey’re going to tell me that it’s not harmful. High insulin levels are damaging. Also the aspirin does not take the leg pain away. Let me add that I’m going to a functional medicine doctor next week. Also the only medical person that’s ever helped me and not hurt me more was a naturopath. I’ve moved so he’s over 200 miles away but I’m going to make an appointment also to go see him in the spring. Looking back there has not been 1 Western medical Dr. that’s helped me in this journey. They have all done harm! And ignore the food pyramid. Find out what works for you.

If you research every study with large amounts of people the mortality rates of people on statins are dramatically lower than those on placebo. In addition there was a study with like 40,000 people they gave half people statins and half placebo... 95% of the people reported muscles weakness and side effects lol.

I have issues with this. If you can't trust your Dr then get another until you find one that communicates by listening as well as prescribing. Just like everyone else physician's are fallible. Also there are those that just seem curt or terse. Again switch if needed. My youngest likes that kind of dr but she has a lot of medical knowledge and can converse with them knowledgeably. I like ones who listen to my issues. I go to a practice that has 4 supervising Dr's and about 8 interns who are still learning and very open with new knowledge. I have several issues, including Long Covid, which means one of my daughters or my 25 year old g'daughter must go with me. I also get detailed chart info on line. Just a few weeks prior to that she had gotten new glasses which included a full eye exam. She went back to the eye doctor and a re-exam showed a problem. I don't remember exactly if it was a hemorrhage or what, but the doctor said some type of trauma had taken place and that her eye would never get better. We tried to figure out what this trauma could have been. I don't know what made us think of the statins, but looked it up on the internet and found out that it was a known side-effect. I had Rhabdomyolisis, Presyncope, and IBS with statins. My doctor kept prescribing them but in lower doses convinced that a moderately elevated cholesterol was worse than the side effects such as sever muscle cramps and light headedness which almost caused traffic accidents on several occasions. After moving out of the area, my new doctor had me tested for signs of Rhabdomyolsis. The tests confirmed my suspicion and my new doctor took me of statins immediately. My muscles have recovered somewhat but not completely and the Presyncope cleared up almost immediately after I stopped taking statins. IBS is still with me. My doctor also said that having slightly or moderately elevated cholesterol was not a major issue and the condition had been blown far out of proportion by doctors and researchers working for the drug manufacturers.

I have also experienced rhabdomyolysis, although the cause was NOT statins. I had a kidney stone a while back, and before that, a testicular torsion, but rhabdomyolysis was far worse than either of those, and is the worst thing that I have ever been through. I am writing this because rhabdomyolysis is very uncommon, so most people have no idea of how terrible this condition is, so here is a guy to commiserate. The immediate symptoms were mental confusion, minor hallucinations, and drhydration, yet without experiencing thirst. However, the recovery was worse. Once the cause was eliminated, my muscles began to regenerate; this process would manifest as around 30 minutes of excruciating pain in one of my large muscle groups, such as my right thigh (for example.) About 30 minutes after the pain stopped, the same process would begin in some other muscle group. This process just kept going, rotating through all of the large muscle groups; all four quadrants of my back muscles, thighs, calves, etc, and this continued for a full SIX WEEKS. Additionally, for the first week I experienced diarrhea *once every hour*, regardless of if I had eaten or not. This resulted in severe dehydration, and I had to force myself to drink a tremendous amount of water. I can only hope that your symptoms were less severe.

@@barrybrevik9178 Thank you for your comments. I have suffered many of the same symptoms you did though without the diarrhea. My digestive system went the other way with severe constipation. I almost got into two car accidents when I turned in front of oncoming traffic at a traffic light. There was no arrow just a green light. On both occasions, I had to pull over to recover my senses. I agree the muscles were the worst. Severe cramps would strike in large muscle groups seemingly at random and nothing but time seemed to quell them. For me, it lasted about six months. I'm truly sorry you had to go through that.

I was prescribed statins back in 2011, Simvastatin if I remember correctly. Within a couple of months, I started having both leg and back pain. I didn't make the connection between the statins and pain until I listened to The People's Pharmacy program on American PBS radio. On the day I listened, a guest Doctor was talking about the side effects of synthetic statins, such as leg and back pain. He recommended using natural Red Yeast Rice instead. Red Yeast Rice was where the original statin compounds came from and then synthetic versions were synthesized to replace them. I bought a reputable Red Yeast Rice brand and started taking it instead of the Simvastatin Within two weeks, my leg and back pain vanished plus my cholesterol was still where my Doctor wanted it. I confessed to him that I was no longer taking the Simvastatin. He wanted to try other statins and see if they caused leg and back pain. I tried at least 5 different statins (I can't remember which ones) but all of them had the same painful side effects. Needless to say, I still take Red Yeast Rice to this day. I had to go off my statin due to severe joint pain, pain to the point where I thought about it when ever I moved. My cardiac doctor acted as if it was a trade off. I could be miserable or risk not reducing my cholesterol which was barely over normal. I opted to enjoy life instead of the misery of immobilization which I did to reduce the pain of moving around. Doctors don’t think of the side effects , only pushing meds for the pill companies.

also I have that side effect of an elevated blood sugar reading, coupled with being on a Keto diet, I've lost a lot of weight, however, the last A1C was 7.1, the doctor and I realized since I have no symptoms of diabetes, type 2 variety, it must be the Symvastatin I take. Though I am grateful that the statin has helped reduce the cholesterol but more importantly has minismized any heart issues, by BP is now about 127/75 or so. I reversed my type 2 diabetes in 2015, and the statin helped minimize any heart abnormalities due to elevated cholesterol. Good Video and thanks

I was on a statin a long time ago and did not realize how bad the side effects were until I stopped taking the pills temporarily when my medical plan changed. The difference OVERNIGHT in how I felt mentally and physically was unbelievable. I considered myself allergic to statins. Years later a cardiologist convinced me to give them another try. Big mistake. Within 3 days of use, I again felt like crap and found a side effect that most doctors tell me doesn't exist. It aggravated my tinnitus greatly, and seemingly permanently. I have been off the statins long time, but my brain is still convinced that I am in a forest meadow in the evening. The chorus of chirps, buzzes, clicks and other cricket/frog sounds is loud and never ending.

With regards to statins causing muscle weakness or breaking down muscles, think about it - our heart is a muscle! The risk of damaging my heart is one of many reasons I refused to take statins when my (now ex-) doctor told me more than 20 years ago that my cholesterol level was so high I would drop down dead from a heart attack if I did NOT take statins. My cholesterol is probably still high, just as my mother's was all her life (she lived to age 96 without heart problems), and I am in good health at age 70. I take no prescription drugs. My ex-doctor, who takes lots of them, is younger than me but has a number of health issues now including heart problems. I have read that properly prescribed drugs are the third most common cause of death.

In her 70's my mother had cholesterol that were consistently hovering in the 300s and her doctors kept prescribing /changing her statins due to side effects. She decided to stop them, ate a healthy diet, occasionally used drugs when her BP was elevated, never stopped physically traveling all over the world, loved to debate on any topic. In the last year of her life she visited the Philippines to celebrate her birthday and to play mahjong with lifelong friends with the same passion for the game. She aspirated on her cake around Thanksgiving developed pneumonia, long ICU care followed but she passed away after Christmas at the age of 96 years. About 8 months ago a stomach CT noted an inlarged liver, however liver labs were fine. Liver CT showed a small amount of scarring and more detailed labs found smooth muscle antibodies (SMA) - Which possible means hepatitis)...

While your brain represents about 2-3% of your total body weight, 25% of the cholesterol in your body is found in your brain, where it plays important roles in such things as membrane function, acts as an antioxidant, and serves as the raw material from which we are able to make things like progesterone, estrogen, cortisol, testosterone and even vitamin D. In fact, in a recent study available on the NIH Public Access site, researchers showed that in the elderly, the best memory function was observed in those with the highest levels of cholesterol. Low cholesterol is associated with an increased risk for depression and even death. This understanding of the important role of cholesterol in brain function raises concern as we now see changes in recommendations for prescribing statin medication. Some estimates indicate that moving forward, the number of individuals taking statins to lower cholesterol in America may actually double! This presents a worrisome proposition for brain health.

My cholesterol levels had increased over the years to about 200-210 total, LDL 100-110....HDL remained constant over last 25+ yrs at about 62-66....Primary and Cardio prescribed 20mg atorvastatin.....Noticed energy loss fairly soon, but didn't put 2 and 2 together.....Shoulder muscle pain and neuropathy in wrists stated this year....Onset quite sudden in both cases...Really hope there's no long term muscle or nerve damage....I recall that cholesterol wasn't considered high until it reached 240 (20 yrs ago??), now it's 200.....Statins are the most prescribed meds in the U.S. (research results....not sure if that's really true, but probably close enough).....Big pharma $$$ in statin scripts...... Side note: Was on blood thinner until about 6 months ago, too.....I see my primary twice/yr after blood work.....Everything always fine until starting blood thinners; red platelets low during that period....Up for semi-annual with primary next month (aug. '21)....Curious to see results after dropping thinner and statin....If cholesterol back up to 200, so be it... In my case, statin more deadly than slightly elevated cholesterol.....Still take 81mg aspirin every day.... Sorry to bore ya, folks, but wonder how many others have had similar symptoms with their statin....

My family is one cardiac mess. Two grandparents with strokes. My nuclear family? Casebook case. My mother and brother had/have hyperlipidemia. My Mom lived till 94 as she followed a diet, starting back in the 60s, and exercised every-day. She was extremely disciplined and it worked. She lived until 94. My brother who had the same condition needed a quadruple at 60 He was not disciplined.. Continuing, My Dad and middle brother both had mild heart attacks., Brother-65/ Dad- 77. I am the only one,12 years younger, who has been completely free of having of one symptom of cardiac disease. My BP ran towards 150/90. I think I had 'white coat hypertension' :) This was for decades. Norvasc lowered my HP to 72/132 I was running 7-10 miles a day until I was diagnosed with the cardiac genetic disease, HCM. The HCM Doctor called me in the 5 out of 1-5 range. Meaning I've never had a symptom from HCM...never dropped dead and as they say, was the golden boy. MY LDL climbed to 171 but my HDL was always around 60. It is thought that having Gilbert's disease protects the heart from cardiac events and I have this harmless disease. Here is the rub. I started a statin because of my family history. I could not tolerate one statin or beta-blocker. It was bad. I knew I had to take one statin so I started rosuvastatin. The change was immediate. As someone who got out of bed and was ready to 'rock n roll', suddenly I was in the bed, every morning, feeling like I could not move. I was fine by the afternoon but I had lost a certain amount of energy. Every morning I would dread waking. as I could not move until I made myself It is still the same. Meanwhile, my LDL dropped to 105 on the statin. I upped it to 7.5 and it dropped to 95. I will never take more than this amount. I have discovered that if I take 1/2 motrin-1/2 Tylenol at night, it makes a big difference.I am still bone achy but my energy is such that I can get out of bed when I wake . btw..Co.Q10 upset my stomach.Couldn't take it. Really good video. I suffer from Familial hypercholesterolemia and statins have been a life saver for me. I've been on statins for 30 years. I have noticed no side effects aside from muscle soreness; but I run and lift weights 5 days/week and surf or rock climb the other days. Perhaps that's where my soreness comes from? Balding, yes, but I was losing my hair years prior to beginning my statin use. I do believe my blood sugars increased, in par, because of statin use. I went as high as 111 on my blood sugars until I modified my diet away from carbs and my last measurement a few months ago had my blood sugars at 76. And lastly, I do believe statins should not be a "take it and forget it" kind of medication. It's important to stay physically fit while on statins and be mindful of alcohol and sugar intake. YMMV.

I stopped taking it, switched dr, now I take flaxseed oil and levels are perfect. But god!! That screwed up my life for a few years! Never again!!!

My mom was on statin tablets for years, so many side effects. Last year an Indian friend of hers introduced her to a doctor who used natural medication with no side effects. my momma got cured, my kids spent their summer holidays with her. I’m so happy, I can refer you to dr. Naomi if you need help

Thanks for making this video, I had a past doctor that didn’t like statins but never told me why and my new doctor thinks I should be on a Statin but I was curious to know what the side effects were, so at least now I know what to watch for. Thank you so much

I’m sure I’m probably not the first one to ask this, but if statins aren’t the way to go to lower cholesterol, what is?

@@rotfan77 Diet, but over a long period. Statin for a shorter period. It is just my rational opinion. Take statin to lower the cholesterol level than a good diet to maintain it.

Some people find the side effect never goes away. Change in diet is a much better way to improve health overall. No one has a statin deficiency. No one needs a statin. Statins do not increase life span, nor do they prevent heart attack or stroke. Watch videos by Dr. Ken D. Berry, MD, and other smart doctors on how to improve triglycerides and HDL and LDL particle size with a better diet. Ask doctor for a copy of your lab results including reference ranges. Cholesterol tests are actually a marker of inflammation. Here’s what I mean… when a warning light lights up on your car’s dashboard, you don’t treat the light itself… you fix the root cause, what is usually found somewhere in the motor. Same with the body. You don’t treat the cholesterol itself (the warning light). Instead, with a much improved diet, you treat the inflammation in your body (the motor). Your body will run better overall, and be reliable. You’ll feel even better and naturally be more active when you feel better. Turning out the light in the dash, will not deal with the underlying problem. Treatment should not make you sicker in another way, like causing Diabetes, or Dementia.

I suffered from Rhabdomyolysis when I was first placed on statins. Incredibly painful. I was changed from a lipid soluble statin to a water soluble statin and this solved the cause but took a while to reverse the damage done. If you get any symptoms don't delay and head directly to your doctor.

Look for information about the former ABC ( Australian Broadcasting Commission ) medical investigational journalist Dr. Maryanne Demasi , who attempted from 2013 to initiate debate about the use of statins. She ended up being silenced by by her employer with a gag order, and her TV program "Catalyst" was cancelled, with all members from the executive producer down all sacked. Her very logical and extensive investigation showed that it was impossible to gain access to any of the statin research. She was continually told that the research shows that statins were safe and that you will just have to trust us on that. The only problem is that the authorities holding the statin research were financed by the pharmaceutical industries! No different to a drug carte saying that fentanyl is completely safe to use.

Went to a new doctor, was told by staff that she was prescribing a statin to “Prevent a heart attack”. Actual words, they’re that smart evidently. Started studying about statins, first thing that strikes me is this drug is stopping a normal bodily function. Normal, like you know it’s “Supposed” to happen. Second big issue is the lack of studies on side affects, for a major drug that’s been around for a while. That’s stopping a normal body function. Then there’s the issue of the sales pitch, numbers misrepresented to exaggerate the benefits. Like saying it will prevent a heart attack. Need a new doctor.

Good move , your heart is one of the biggest muscles, I’m amazed the majority of Doctors know very little of the real negative side effects other than what is written o the side of the box. Even if you don’t feel the side effects it is still doing the damage.

Initially the major side effects were never disclosed by the labs, all swept under the carpet. As far as i recall there was a big court case/cases over it.

I had to stop taking Rosuvastatin when I discovered it almost destroyed my Kidneys and my Creatinine levels went sky high. (over 1200) (This was shortly after a heart attack and triple by-pass surgery) Put me in the hospital and I was very close to needing dialysis. I have recovered some what, but my Creatinine levels (160) are still high after 2 years of treatment but very slowly returning to normal. They now consider me allergic to statins and now taking Ezetimibe for cholesterol reduction.

Was put on a statin for a slightly elevated LDL. After two weeks I went from physically active to barely able to walk upright with severe hip joint pain. Weaned myself off and was back to normal in weeks. Tried another brand last year and had same results after 3 days. It is now in my medical records that I cannot take statins.
