The time had come once again for Viscose Company 0-4-0T 6 to make its annual visit to the Catskill Mountain Railroad in Kingston, NY. I wasn't actually planning on coming up here at first, given that I've already seen #6 up here twice before. However, that changed when I learned that RS-1 401 would be on the east end of the train instead of GE 45-Tonner 42, meaning that it would actually be running long hood forward on a passenger train. It's not much, but I figured seeing 401 running with its front end facing the right way for once would make for some cool shots. I was able to chase the 10:30, 12:30, and 2:30 runs this time, allowing me to get at least one shot from every publicly-accessible crossing along the line.
Starting off, we see Viscose Company 0-4-0T 6 and RS-1 401 idling with the train at the Westbrook station. 401 was used on the train in place of 42 this year to provide extra power and allow the train to travel further up the line without burning through too much of #6's water. This is also the first time I noticed that #6 is equipped with an emergency horn, mounted under its boiler. Soon enough, it was time for the 10:30 run to depart. As it did, I got sprayed by some of the hot steam shooting out of #6, which is why I flinched and moved the camera around a bit.
I wasn't able to beat the 10:30 train to Washington Avenue, so instead I went out to Hurley Mountain Road in Ulster to wait for it there. Since there aren't really any other places to see the train along the active track west of this crossing, I stayed here to wait for it to return east, now led by 401. From here, I moved over to Washington Avenue to see the train passing the Best Western Plus. After this, I took a lunch break in the hour between trains, then moved over to the bus garage crossing to wait for the 12:30 run. For the return trip, I figured I'd wait for it at U.S. Route 209, seeing as I've only filmed the train coming back east there once before. I was also able to see it at the Kingston Plaza entrance.
For the 2:30 train, I went back to the Washington Avenue crossing to wait for it. This ended up being a hot day to begin with, but this is the point where I really started feeling the heat, so I spent some time hiding in shade and waiting in the car before the train approached. It was a close call, but I was just barely able to beat the train to Route 209 to get my last shot of #6 leading. From here, I would return to the bus garage crossing to see it coming back east, then beat it to Kingston Plaza to see the train passing the parking lot and pulling back into the Westbrook station.
