I currently run a freelance illustration business and am looking to do a side-hustle in writing. As soon as you said bridge business and how you explained that it’s “for those who want more free time to spend time doing hobbies” is what I related to from the get-go. Because that’s exactly what I’m looking for. I want to spend more time doing outdoor activities, I don’t want to spend most of my life working for someone else in that way. And I feel like freelance writing for others is the way for me because I love reading and I love writing stories.

Wow, this was really inspiring! I’ve been at Musician since I was a small child, I know so much about that, that I end up, talking myself into writing lyrics, or using my story telling skills towards that…But I’ve secretly wanted to be a writer since elementary school. Whether I’m at an amusement park, a concert, or even a date,😂 there’s always this inner narrative running, that I feel I need to express, but often don’t know where to put it. I would love to finally get this out of my system, and use it to benefit my life, (instead of just being a distraction, or a conversation with myself). Thanks!

I've always "prided" myself at being able to write, (even when I was a sports writer for a local newspaper here on Hilton Head Isl. some 40+ years ago AND DIDN'T KNOW "JACK" about sports !!!), so there's something to be said about living vicariously through others, even though they may know less than you. Ok ok... This is a fantastic video with really great tips. But I have questions. As someone trying to break into freelance writing, even looking on websites offering spots for writers, EVERYONE wants proper credentials. They want to see extensive samples and lists of published work. They want alllll the details. And as beginners, let's face it, we've got none. Even getting into crap sites like Upwork, they want a proper job title and CV. Not everyone as that, even if we have a desire and maybe a tiny skill in writing. How in the world do we over come this, and not just give up because we don't all have the same level of privilege and are trying very hard to build just that. Everyone seems to have a strong fancy background in corporate careers already.... So is this something that is truly for the already successful? Or can us peasants find our place in this freelance writing world too?

Okay, I have a background in Information Technology, specifically Administrative Applications. And I have a background in songwriting and getting original songs made. I have a background in Holistic Health and Spirituality. I'm on Upwork and have been creating memes. I'm watching this because I want to freelance in the areas that Dr. Bruce Lipton, Gregg Braden, and Dr. Joe Dispenza discuss. Ancient Aliens, the new Physics, Geology, and esoteric subjects like Near Death and Shared Death (NDE and SDE) experiences. I've volunteered for folks like Dr. Raymond Moody and Energy Medicine and Life coaches too. My niches don't see to connect, so would you say I am better suited to the Generalist Freelance Content Writer? I already have two blogs, LinkedIn account, Instagram, Facebook, etc. Thank you! This is a very concise and helpful video.

Hi Sean, can you tell me if when it's stated in the contact page of a blog that they’re not accepting guest posts / any submissions, does that generally mean that I shouldn’t cold email them at all? I wouldn't send them the cold email to pitch any specific posts ideas, but instead to introduce myself and ask for a call to further qualify them and offer my services.

Hey Sean, this is a huge help for new freelance writers! If you don't mind me asking, what's a good way for us to search for clients to reach out to? Let's say I'm an outdoor enthusiast and know loads about hiking gear. Should we be looking for brands that sell goods (ex. Keen, Osprey, Hydroflask) or more along the lines of informative/entertainment websites (ex. Backpacker) to contact? Also...I'm finding it difficult to find the editor or content manager's contact info, is there a way to navigate this? I seriously appreciate any response, I'm definitely eager to start my freelancing journey.

Great questions! The short answer would be to reach out to all of the above. I'd start with smaller blogs in the industry, as there will be a higher likelihood of success. Even if your first jobs are unpaid "guest posts" for an outdoor blog, that experience and the credibility that comes with it makes it worthwhile in my view. . A few things to do when searching: 1) Google "[Company name] blog". So for instance "Keen Blog" will take you to this page: www.keen.com/articles/keen-blog. They've got some content, but it could be much better utilized, that could be an opportunity to get your foot in the door. 2) You'll have better luck with the bigger brands once you've established yourself in the industry a little bit. 3) As for finding the editors, start with linkedin and search for the company. I've found that's usually the best way to find the positions like "editor, director of communications, marketing/pr etc." Then use the Email Hunter chrome extension on the website to see if you can find either the individuals email address, or the common naming convention for their company emails (ie first.last@company . com) 4) Search for "[Industry] digital agency." Just searching for "outdoors digital agency" I found a number of agencies that specialize in working with outdoor companies. So if you can build a relationship with them, that opens up a lot of doors. Hopefully that gets you going in the right direction!

I’ve been working as a journalist for five years now and have honed my craft. However I have grown tired of noisy newsroom and difficult editors. Outside of writing, my greatest passion is music and I want to go freelance and work for myself.
