That was the best interview I've heard with Stephen Hendry. Two intelligent blokes (Jake and Damian) with very well thought of questions that never get asked to Stephen to address his new comeback and himself as person. I will probably listen to this a few times.

That was probably the best and interesting interview I've ever seen. To have a 7×word champion sit and be so honest and inciteful was so refreshing to see. Most people don't open up and show their inner demons like that, they usually sit their and blow their own trumpet 🎺. Fascinating stuff to listen to, but also shows the real behind the scenes stuff and what truly goes through the mind of the person who is not only at the top of their sport, but the best in the world at said sport. Hendry mentioned Tiger Woods and he's mentioned Michael Schumacher in the past, and both of them guys were the dominant force in their sport and all 3 of them had that unrelenting drive to be the best, but to hear Hendry say that he loved having the target on his back was something not many people can handle. 5 of Hendry's world titles came against Jimmy White in the finals and I remember watching them live on TV, and because Hendry is Scottish and Jimmy White was English and the final being played in England, the sound of all the booing and shouting when Hendry walked out was really bad. Especially when snooker is renowned for being a quiet respectful game, but Jimmy White was the people's champion and the relationship between Scots and English in sports is far more than just a rivalry, so to be Scottish playing in England against the English fan favourite and beat him time and time again must of been truly exceptional and have ice running through his veins to play against Jimmy White, who was a truly exceptional player himself but Jimmy had 99% of the crowd for him, while Hendry knew that almost every single person in the crowd wanted him to lose and many of them hated him too. So to me that shows just what High Performance truly is.

Stephen Hendry. The most brutal snooker player I've ever seen. He dominated the sport for a decade. Ice cold killer instincts. I remember that gaze. Total focus all the time. Ronnie has more natural talent. More than even Jimmy White and Alex Higgins at their best. More than Judd Trupp and Neil Robertson today. Ronnie is the greatest natural talent of all time. But Stephen Hendry like Steve Davis before him, dominated the game. Now, Stephen Hendry is a great commentator. Back then I was a huge Jimmy White fan, still am to this day. Hendry was to Jimmy, what Steve was to Alex. They were so consistently strong. We were lucky to see the Davis - Hendry years. And one player I'll never forget. Tony Drago. From Malta. He played with way too much emotion. Wonderful talent. He may have been even faster than Ronnie at his fastest. Tony was very emotional. I swear there were times he was on the verge of crying in his chair. Anyway, my pick for the world champion this year. Mark Selby. He's been going through tough times recently, suffering from depression. I wish him all the best. I think he'll come back strong and win the world title again.

@@williamredpath861 Can't prove that. Ronnie at 17 years old, beat Hendry in a major final when Hendry was the best player in the world. Mentally prime Hendry is superior to Ronnie/more dominant in 90's, but talent wise, I don't think so. Class of 92 all outlasted Hendry, and are still relevant today all nearly 50, against younger high-level competition, they fell off the top/ lost form for periods and bounced back. They didn't fall off hard like Steven did after 30-35. That's what some of you guys don't want to acknowledge, plus how Ronnie's personal issues held his career back until he resolved them. Judd does not have the same issues, a major reason why he wins a lot. Hendry had a strict mentor/manager around to make sure he maximised his potential and stay focused. Not to mention Ronnie's stature in the modern game in UK and abroad, the last great personality left in the game.

Say what you like about Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Selby or even Steve Davis, at their best they are all similar, but what Stephen had over all of them was the ability to play his best under pressure. The best pressure player (as Steve Davis says) and that’s why he is the best for me. Ronnie the best talent, but sport is about coping with pressure. It was scary, as an amateur player myself, what he could do with his back against the wall. People forget that. It was the final break against John Higgins in the 96 U.K. final after loosing loads of frames or the final 56 ish against Jimmy White, in the final frame of the 94 world final, after Jimmy missed the black, that only Hendry could do. O’Sullivan could not make that 56 at 17 all in the final frame of world final.

I am big fan and will be rooting for you. would love to see you against the rocket again i am, a massive Ronnie fan too and always classed your matches as amongst the highest quality snooker I have ever seen. I think part of the reason Ronnie dropped out was fear of not being able to at least produce the usual high standard obviously because of personal reasons at that time. every player has peaks and lows in confidence but class and quality are permanent.

Now that Ronnie O'Sullivan has equalled Stephen Hendry's 7 world titles, you have this 'who is the GOAT'? question going around just like the Ronaldo vs Messi argument. Now both Ronnie and Stephen says that other is the GOAT 🐐 which is very noble of them to say. However, to me it all depends on what you class as the best. Is it who can play the best shot, is it who has more titles, is it who was at the top of the sport the longest or I've even heard people say it's who plays more attractively lol because Jimmy White played the most brilliant and beautiful shots I've ever seen but never won a word title, losing in all 6 finals he reached, 5 of those to Stephen Hendry. So obviously being able to play the best shots doesn't mean your the best. Obviously composure comes in to it, how you deal with pressure and expectations, discipline and focus. Here's why I think Stephen Hendry is the GOAT 🐐 because he didn't lift a cue until 2 weeks before his 13th birthday and for that first year he played on a kids toy table with a plastic tip, whereas Ronnie first lifted a cue aged 4. Now obviously at that age he needed to stand on a box, but by the age of 6 he was making 60 and 70 breaks and made his first century at 7 and half which is incredible. Hendry only started playing on a full size table at 14 and turned professional just 2 years later at 16 and won the Scottish championship title at 16. From putting his hand on a real full-size table to becoming world champion took only 7 years. He's still to this day the youngest ever world champion. Ronnie turned professional in 1992 aged 16 and won his first world title 10 years later at the age of 26. So it took Hendry half the time to win his first world title and he'd been playing less than half the time Ronnie had been playing. Hendry went onto completely dominate the 90's and remember Ronnie turned professional in 92, but Ronnie didn't win his first world title until 2001 and by that time Hendry was on the decline. As Ronnie himself put it "they don't make them like Hendry anymore. He was just a pure winning machine and utterly dominated the sport for a decade" he then joked and said it was absolutely terrifying back then when you had to play Hendry, seriously he was an absolute monster who if you weren't 100% on your game you literally didn't stand a chance, not even a sniff. Now that is high praise but it also shows how much Hendry had the rest of the players beat mentally because he was dominating year after year after year, whereas with Ronnie you didn't know which Ronnie would turn up. The Ronnie at 100% who could wipe the floor with anyone or the Ronnie that couldn't be bothered and sit with a towel over his face. He once even walked out of the match against Hendry and forfeited the game. All in all these 2 gentlemen were absolutely brilliant and incredible, the best, but for me it boils down to this, nobody can say for definite who would of won between Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson because they never ever fought each other, but we are lucky enough to have had these 2 greatest players play at the same time and at the end of the day Hendry dominated the 90's while Ronnie was there and that's all the proof you need. Ronnie didn't dethrone Hendry the way Hendry did to Steve Davies and in the 8 years that Ronnie was playing in the 90's, he never became world champion and he never became world number 1, in fact Ronnie has never dominated the sport in the way Hendry did. What Ronnie has done though is truly exceptional too, because to have the longevity that he's had is remarkable. Especially now that there are a lot of young players coming through, and I do honestly believe that Ronnie is a snooker genius and his talent is almost 2nd to none, but Ronnie, John Higgins and Mark Williams are 3 of the all time greats of the sport and they all turned professional in 92, there must of been something in the air or the water in 92 because that's also the year that David Beckham, Paul Scholes etc came through into the Man Utd first team. All 3 of those greats of the game never ever dominated snooker the way Hendry did and it speaks for itself that Hendry became world champion only 7 years after playing on a proper table and he is still to this day the youngest ever world champion even though the players for the past 20+ years have been starting to play at a far younger age than Hendry did, including Ronnie O'Sullivan. You can actually watch a video on KZitem about Ronnie being interviewed at the age of 9 or 10 I think and he's standing in his little waistcoat and says he'd made centuries before and there's a really sweet lovely innocent answer where he was asked what do you want to be when you're older? And he replies "I want to be bigger" 😂, a great and typical child answer. Anyway I know this has been super long but to me you have to explain everything and put everything in to context, and while little Ronnie was doing that interview saying he's made century breaks before, Hendry hadn't even lifted a cue by then and wouldn't lift a cue for another 4 or 5 years. It's not subjective when talking about the GOAT when the 2 people played at the same time folks, but as Stephen Hendry said "as long as your in the conversation about who's the GOAT 🐐 then you know you've done something right".

He revolutionised the game of snooker completely with his attacking mentality which hadn't been seen up to that that point. The greatest of all time, single minded champion. LEGEND

I think when your starting your career at an early age then you have to put in the long lonely hours of practice because your learning your trade and it's always about well if I play a shot this way then my putting average goes up and like I say your still learning what's the best way to play a certain shot and how to control your emotions and play where as now he knows he has a vast knowledge of the game and his game where as he might have a little bit to learn how to adapt his play to suit where he is now in his career but he knows the technical side like the back of his hand and knows how how to control the emotional side so I think he can enjoy his come back and knows that at this point the hunger has come back but he now knows that it's not going to be the end of his life if it doesn't work out and that only comes from age and experience so I wish him all the best and hope he can really enjoy the fresh hunger without getting ate up his greatness in the game was cemented years ago

The flair of this interview is kind of strange. Especially the first half of it. Stephen is just one of the most naturally talented sportsman ever and can't really explain why he was able to perform on the highest level. He put the work in obviously but that's the basic requirement to be a professional. Everything else came naturally and was probably easy for him. The interviewers don't seem to get this. One of them said that he tells his kids to view themselves as special no matter whether it's right or wrong. But there is a difference between actually having special talents and only telling yourself that you have them. It was probably a lot more difficult for the two interviewers to set up the career they're having know than for Stephen to become a 7 time World Champion.

I find so many similarities between Hendry and Schumacher. During Schumacher's second comeback career was half hearted, and had lost the raw desire and focus that made him almost unbeatable.

Hendry was a great player of that there is no doubt but he is utterly clueless regarding the ethos of snooker. I heard him recently advocate for the frame to be called once a player has amassed enough points to win a frame without giving opportunity for the opponent to win via snookers. I mean some of the most exciting snooker is seeing a player get snookers to win a frame. It is after all called Snooker!!!

Its actually a valid point. Why should a player get to keep another player on the table indefinitely after they have all but lost the frame. Should a player be allowed to keep playing even if he needs 7 or 8 snookers to win. A line needs to be drawn with regards the amount of snookers that a player needs.
