Hi Rod …. I’ve just ordered me a Semi chisel chain, first time that I will be using one. I have only ever used full chisel all my life. I do believe that full chisel is intended for fresh green wood as opposed to the semi chisel which is for more dirty wood? Apparently it’s easier to sharpen and holds an edge longer while using. Great video, my friend…

I love your split screen comparisons 👍🏼 It’s not as accurate as timing each cut, but it gives a better real world idea of the difference in speed. This way is more useful than something like 12.8s vs 13.4s

Thanks for sharing the results of your research project. Though semi is slower, its not like its that huge of a margin. In theory, semi makes a good firewood chain. Im trying it right now and it does seem a little less hungry than full chisel chain. What I am trying to find out now is if it really is more durable in dirty firewood

great video thank you! shopping for a new bar and chain for my little Redmax gz550 and wasn't sure what type of chain to get. Great real world comparison. The only real problem with Full chisel is if you touch the dirt with it even 1 time... it's injured... then it will be much slower than the SC until you touch it up. I ran FC for a while, until I decided that it wasn't "better" for the cutting I do. I'll stick with semi chisel... it just stays sharp a lot longer.

Nice demonstration Rod👍🏼. I get mocked for being a SC fanboy🤣 I generally run FC for falling, but SC for bucking. I’m mostly working up seasoned hardwoods and it seems to me I have to file more frequently with FC. That takes time too, so in my way of thinking it’s probably a wash. Either that or it’s just my stubborn Irish heritage get’n the best of me🤣 Anyway, you put together a nice exhibition! Bless’ns to ya, Tedd

Do you have any experience or thoughts on.404 SC vs 3/8 SC? I’ve heard that.404 SC is the best for stay-sharp (excluding carbide). We have a 261 with a 32” lightweight bar and full skip square. It’s great for de-limbing/bucking.
@FirewoodMidwest

Never ran .404 so not sure about that. 32” bar on a 261? That’s a lot of chain for a 261! 😁 Thanks for watching Tim!
@PurpleNovember
Жыл бұрын
@@FirewoodMidwest thank you for the reply. 32” bar is for the reach, not for full cuts. We’ll do very very few full cuts but don’t like going over 80% bar length for a few cuts, for the most part we stay at 60% bar length or less. It’s a real back saver because we don’t need to bend over. I also run 38:1 Saber and 95 octane race gas. But yeah, that’s a lot of bar for a 50cc small bearing saw. In my experience there are not many people, even professionals, who could run a setup like that successfully. We enjoy the channel! Keep it up 👍🏻

@@Aaron_A_Lynch if a new chainsaw operator was worried about kickback, I would advise him to use a stihl green safety chain. If he wants his chain to hold a edge longer use a SC. FC will be faster cutting but dull faster. I have found that when I’m bucking medium sized logs for an extended period of time, I’d rather have a lighter saw(261) with a SC. Let’s say i buck logs all afternoon. At the end of the day I’ve maybe lost a total of 5 or 10 minutes due to using the SC. If I was to stop a file a FC Im guessing I’d lose about the same amount of time. Why mess with filing in the woods if you don’t have to.
