Hart Tool used to make the sweetest California Framing Hammers. Once I got my Stilettos, I never looked back though. They are a dream to wield. And I'm a roofer so I beat my hammers like they owed me money. I was skeptical about Titanium at first, but I'm a true believer now. I'll always have my Estwing steel hammers for demo work, but for framing & carpentry work in general, I'm all Stilettos.

Had the Vaughan 19oz, loved that hammer. Was at the dump one day and left it on the back of the trailer, was pretty bummed that i wasted around 25$. Got a cheapo 23 oz framer and regretted it. The cheapo 23oz had a straight handle that I hated, and by he end of the day framing my forearm was dead ( I was 145lb 20y/o ). After a couple months i dropped 120$ on a 16oz curved handle Stiletto at a lumber yard. I have now had that hammer for over 6 years, and I use it for pretty much everything. The waffling on the face is gone, it is now a flat face so i can use it for finish work HAHA. It still has the same hickory handle that i came with, but is covered in grease and oil. I think its a good thing the handle and head look like shit because to anyone else it probably looks like a pretty shit hammer. I don't mind it... The more you use the hammer the less you need the waffling, and the grease and oil keep the hickory from shrinking and making the head loose. I found I like the curved handle hammers more than straight handle. Something both the Vaughan and Stiletto had in common. They both also has the magnetic nail setter on top which came in handy when my short ass had to tack something up high, or pick up nails and other things I drop on the ground. If I HAD to go back i would get the Vaughan again, but since i have my Stiletto i am more than happy.

I just upgraided from the voughan 19 ounce ive used for 10 years to a 14 ounce stilleto. i got to say I loved the vaughan, it got the job done for 40 bucks, I will miss it. But the reason I got the stilleto was due to weight I'm trying to minimize the weight I have to carry around all day,, traded my fat max tape to a dewalt 25foot,. got rid of my leather belt to a nylon belt, got an alluminum speed square over the steel one I had before and it was all worth it for sure . took half an hour to grind off the waffle face tho haha the titanium is way harder than steel.

The Vaughan hammers are great. I used mine for years, but I changed for the same reason you did. The weight saved using lighter titanium or aluminum tools can make a big difference at the end of the day. Thanks for your comment.

@legalsolutions07

For form setting I'd use the 21oz Hart hammer because hitting form nails will likely deform and flatten the Stiletto waffle head pretty quick. To build a deck I'd use the Stiletto.

I assume that the titanium head hammer is used as it makes life easier for the framer? Now, I'm not being a smart-arse here, I'm genuinely interested- but wouldn't it be as beneficial just to use a lighter hammer of traditional material? What's the difference between 14ozs of steel, and 14 ozs of titanium as regards their use in hammer heads? I'm likely missing something blindingly obvious here !
@legalsolutions07

Good question. I had the same thought when doing my research on the Stiletto. I compared my stiletto with a new Hart 15oz and I had to swing harder with the Hart to get the same driving power of the titanium Stiletto. I think this has to do with the feel of swinging at and hitting a nail head with a titanium head. At contact the titanium head doesn't bounce off the nail head the way steel does and the result is better penetration with the same effort using a titanium head. Thank you for your comment.
@baldeagle13x

Thank you. Less rebound on contact with the nail, so less vibration back into the arm. I knew I'd miss the point!

I believe the thought process is to distribute the weight over more mass. You can make a larger tool at the same weight. Maybe I'm wrong idk

If you want reliability and made in California there's only two brands . Estwing and Vaughan both made in the USA . I'm using my dad's old Estwing which is a 20oz curve claw and it's 50 years old , or my 20oz straight claw . I'm a carpenter/joiner with 30yrs experience . I was considering a 16oz Vaughan Dalluge titanium but I'm really not sure if it's worth £140 .

A home builder just retired, he gave me his dalluge titanium framing hammer 14 oz. I tried it out. To use it all day or to get the job done. Will take a longtime to drive the nail in. I tried my dead on 22 oz just flip your wrist it hits with authority. The 14 ozer really have to swing long and fast to get the job done.

If the US made tools were worth buying i would. I use Japanese made tape measure. Tajima. Way outlasts any other. Many times over. Same with tongue and groove pliers. Namely channellock. I use Knipex instead of the far far inferior channellock. Zero comparison. The Knipex grab better last (so far) 8X longer. So grab better lasts longer. Worth 3x the price, no doubt.

@legalsolutions07

That's what I thought initially, but after using one they are hard enough to easily drive all nails with lots of grip. However, they are not as hard as some steel hammers and over time the waffle pattern flattens out, but I'll recut the waffle pattern with my Dremel when my hammer head loses its grip. Thanks for your comment.

I have one and I love everything except sometimes when I really gotta blast something or need a longer hammer. So I had a Vaughn 23oz for heavy framing. But I was gifted a Martinez M1 from my loving family and I won't ever go back. It's a beast and I never tire of swinging it. I had a hickory handled 14 Stiletto that had Ruger stamped on the back. I did love it but I couldn't keep the handle on it. Eventually I gifted it to a close friend and he still has it.
