Let's see..Kenny Kirkland playing two independent keyboard parts in a difficult time signature. Vinnie Colaiuta (perhaps the best live snare sound in history) and holding down a difficult signature seamlessly. Perfect harmonies. A horn section that's tasteful, in tune and dynamic. Sting playing a bass part in a very difficult time signature while singing a completely counterpucntual part without missing a beat. Yep....it's a mess alright.

@2LongGone Well colour me stupid. When I saw the Cash version, I naturally assumed that it was an older tune given how the dark lyrics were true to Johnny Cash's form. Thanks for enlightening me to that. Feeling pretty dumb now for not having a look at the origins of the song. Sting's treatment of the many cover's he's done has always amazed me. I naturally assumed this was just one such amazing treatment. Thanks for the correction.

All of the KZitem videos of this song that show the lyrics get one word wrong ...rifle into the stream. Sting does not say stream, he says sheen. What does sheen mean in this song? A sheen is "an iridescent appearance on the surface of the water." It means water. Could be a stream, or a pond, or a lake or even a well. People think that Johnny Cash misread the lyrics or changed it. I don't think so. Cash did change salt lands to south lands

For those who like Cash's version: it was a matter of convenience for him to cover a Sting "concept song." Just because he has his man-in-black, western/forlorn image doesn't mean his version is better, just more "accessible" to a mainstream audience. I actually arranged a small ensemble version of this for 5 guitars, bass and drums, and even one of the douches in the group couldn't believe it....Suck it...Sting is an enduring and genius artist...

That extra eight note is crucial for the pace and feel of the melody. As Vinnie said. Sting wanted it this way, but no one should notice. Anyway, if you play/sing this in 4/4 you remove the breathing space between the sentences. Consequently, both Springsteen and Cash played it at a slower tempo. Works OK just very different. I love Springsteens version, but nothing beats the unsentimental original by Sting.

আমি মাথা ঝুলিয়ে দিলাম.............. Lyrics: Early one morning With time to kill I borrowed Jebb's rifle And sat on the hill I saw a lone rider Crossing the plain I drew a bead on him To practice my aim My brother's rifle Went off in my hand A shot rang out Across the land The horse, he kept running The rider was dead I hung my head I hung my head I set off running To wake from the dream My brother's rifle Went into the stream I kept on running Into the salt lands That's where they found me My head in my hands The sheriff he asked me "Why had I run?"
