As a pilates teacher ribs down cue is common place. Whilst I tried to make sure it was a softening, tension was still created where I didn't want it so thank u for this helpful video and all the other great info.

Hello, Zac. Could you advice something to improve ribcage position after very unsuccessfull PRI therapy😪. I've been doing these exhalation exercises around 3-4 months, and with pillow under my upper thorax, closing down lower ribs, prescribed by so called "specialists". Result: more forward head, rounded sholders, hyperkyphosis, bigger dowager's hump, more pain in lumbar spine and sacrum I've ever had before,ugly belly😔..and my body is like falling forward. Maybe you could suggest some exercises from any of your videos? (sorry for mistakes, if there are any). Cannot manage with all these problems for more than 4 years already, after I had this therapy.

Love your videos. I’m finally starting to breath properly and can feel the tightness in my chest relax. But it’s not without conscious effort for sure. I’d love to w see some videos on cranial strain patterns in the zink cpp patterns. I’m finding without cranial work I cannot improve.

How do you differentiate a rectus strategy from the gentle ab work you are doing here? I feel ill confuse when to say this is gentle ab contraction (good) vs oh this is a rectus strategy (bad)
@ZacCupplesPT
2 жыл бұрын
Rectus strategy = pooch belly. Ab wall stays put, ribs stay down. You’ll also see sternal depression and more thoracic flexion with a rectus strategy

well why would you be actually moving your body and ribs during exhale?.... just allow to pull back (laterally) in nicely as the diaphragm domes back up into the chest cavity lol....

Awesome explanation. For a long time I was forcing ribs down and ended up with a different set of problems to where I started! Exhale for the win!!! One thing I still wonder is whats the pelvic floors role in all this? Are you expecting an increase in pelvic floor tension during the exhale, and should this tension in the PF be maintained on the inhale? Or should the PF be allowed to relax on the inhale?
@ZacCupplesPT
2 жыл бұрын
Pelvic floor - relaxed during inhale (needs to so guts descend down); exhale should contract...though I don't know to what extent this should be perceived. i typically don't cue much with the pelvic floor
@DrLauraPayling
2 жыл бұрын
@@ZacCupplesPT Okay, cool! So on the inhale the goal is to maintain some tension in lower abdominals, but to relax PF?
@ZacCupplesPT
2 жыл бұрын
@@DrLauraPayling Yes. Both will relatively "relax". You are keeping a bit of ab tensio to reduce the ribcage lifting upward

Hi Zac, one question please. If we can really target rectus abdominis one part at a time as you mentioned in the video ? Thank you
@ZacCupplesPT
Жыл бұрын
There’s selective recruitment along all muscles.take a squat for example. The proximal attachment lengthens at the bottom, and the distal shortens
@shailkumarjain
Жыл бұрын
@@ZacCupplesPT one further question, if this selective recruitment can be done intentionally ? Or its just that brain does so when in certain needs ? Like if i want to target proximal part/pelvis part of rectus abdominis, can i ? Also i dont see in Squats of any need of different recruiting of proximal and distal part of rectus abdominis. How and why ? Thank you
@ZacCupplesPT
Жыл бұрын
@@shailkumarjain I usually choose positions that would get that. I'm certain some people might be able to actively squeeze certain parts, but you can't ever know for certain what's contracting. The squat analogy was an example of how a muscle could have selective recruitment. Consider some activities could be the same for rectus.

I’m guessing it’s this video that you were referring to? kzitem.info/news/bejne/rK6PrKmNjHZ-dYY I managed to get posterior mediastinum expansion when I did it, but only once, and I can’t remember why it happened. I think being distracted helps, if your mind is elsewhere it just clicks. Trying to make it happen rarely works.
