The Welsh Valleys north of Cardiff are rich in coal, the lifeblood of industry in the 19th and 20th century. At their peak, railways crisscrossed the valleys, with collieries everywhere you looked. In the 1980s the National Coal Board set about closing unprofitable mines, the Welsh Valleys being particularly badly hit. The railway once again came to the rescue, now conveying people to the jobs located in the city of Cardiff.
