My father was an original member of the First Special Service Force, and he said that him and all the other men in the unit hated the movie "The Devil's Brigade" because there never was any hatred between the Americans and the Canadians like the movie portrayed. And my father hated it when the movie portrayed all the Americans as Rapists, Miss-fits, and Criminals, to which he said, "we didn't have any guys like that in my unit."

That was my dad's view as well. He was Staff Sgt H.P. Nicholas and was with the communications group. He had lost his wife in a car wreck and when war broke out he joined the army at age 35. He volunteered for the FSSF because he thought it was a USO outfit. Found himself in Helena doing parachute training, skiiing and mountain climbing. He got a bronze star for pushing colonel Frederick out of the way of a German 88 shell. He rarely talked about his experiences. He met my mom in a bar in Helena and married her so she would get his benefits. He did not think he would make it back since the operation plough was still ongoing. Fortunately they canceled that. Thanks for you dad's service.

Even though I'm a White, VietNam veteran, I know that the Black soldiers, that I had the honor of leading into combat, never let me down. In war, there are no White or Black warriors only men that take care of each other.
