Well no wonder your curved needle machine can be difficult! You gave it’s step sister the straight needle machine twice the attention on KZitem. If you’re gonna play favourites like this some one is gonna be hurt! Two really lovely machines that are enjoying a good home. Thanks for the video.

@@customboots The machine that we have wasn't working correctly and I've been using your video to troubleshoot. I'm trying to stitch through 3 layers of (4/5 veggie tan from Tandy) leather to make knife sheathes. I think my first problem is thread. Which thread would you recommend?

@@crystalw7537, I used to use #6 Kantstrand, and that worked fine, but I've started selling a braided thread from Italy and now I'm using that. (go to www.sorrell.shop and type "braided" in the search box) I use pre-wound bobbins from www.panhandleleather.com I haven't even tried winding my own bobbins for the Straight Needle, but my Curved Needle gets very grumpy when I try to wind my own bobbins, so I'm a big fan of the pre-wound ones.

I'd rather use wax anyway because even when you wear your thread away on your soles, the wax will still keep the knot holding the sole on the shoe.

Oh, It looks like you are running right twist thread on the bottom. I can see it unraveling while you are sewing. Have you had any trouble with right twist in the bobbin? Just wondering is all as most needle and awl machines will not do so well with right twist. We love the straight needle for sewing on replacement soles as you cannot see the stitching holes in the welting on a Landis 12 machine. The channeling knife does well for hiding the stitch on some harness parts, but not sole leather or rubber soles. You sure have a lot of neat machines. I sure hope your business is doing well. Thanks for all the videos

For an American Straight Needle manual, google "proleptic" or "Shop Talk magazine" (sorry, it won't let me post a link) click on "equipment manuals" and then find "American Straight Needle." They're in alphabetical order and there are a whole bunch of Adler machines to scroll through before you get there.

Great tutorial! Thank you so much for putting this together, it clears up a lot of questions I had about my machine. My machine does not have the stitching guide on it. Is there a place where you can buy that or is it something that you made or had made to put on the machine?

What should the bobbin tension be????
@customboots
3 жыл бұрын
Whatever it takes to get the stitch to lock in the middle of the material and not on the top or bottom. I will say though, that it’s better to do the majority of your tension adjustments on the top thread and not on the bobbin case.

David, there's not much information out there about the American Straight Needle, and finding someone to work on machines is a challenge. I believe www.gatewayshoemachine.com has someone who works on machines, and www.proleptic.net is a good source for manuals and parts catalogs.

Lisa Sorrell what can you tell me about adjusting belt tension?
@customboots
7 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be super tight. As long as it's tight enough to turn the wheel, you're good. If you're using leather belting, you can always tighten it a bit if necessary.

Hello, Thread lube defeats the purpose for securing the thread an does not protect the linen and or flax thread from the elements causing premature thread rot. Thread wax protects the natural thread and glues the thread in place. You would be better off using polyester thread. Do not use nylon.
