I know you made this 6 years ago but thank you so much. I recently got two christy cashmere caps, I assumed they would fit because I measured but sadly when I got home I realized they both squeezed my head. I was a bit worried since it’s cashmere that it might hurt it but they stretched beautifully :) I’m so happy I can wear them both comfortably and don’t have to get rid of them.

This is a do it at your own risk kinda thing, it'll work sometimes, unless it's already stretched out, it should pop out about a half a size if u do it right. it doesn't work for every cap, maybe 75% of the time it does, but be gentle, don't go nuts w the pressure.

Awesome! This helped so much. I just got two Bate's 60cm Toni caps. One fits great, and the other felt a bit tight. I was a little afraid each time I heard a pop while stretching it over my knee, but the cap is in tact and fitting much better. No more red line across my forehead. Feels a lot better. Thank you.

Thank you Kevin! I have a narrow shaped head length-wise but an absolutely humongous forehead Lol, so making sure my forehead has enough 'breathing space' is critical but I struggle to find caps that are narrow at the side and more roomy at the front, and all conventional sizes for me are either too wide at the sides or too narrow at the front so I'm going to try this tip out (I don't want to have to fork out £20 on a hat stretcher, either). You're the man! All the best from the other side of the pond, mate. Cheers.

I recently bought a Ralph Lauren wool Newsboy cap, but it feels tight. The one size bigger one is way too big, so I am really considering to try this out. My only concerns are the “what if’s”. Would this method also work on a wool cap with the lining made of 51% curpo and 49% cotton? Tags are still attached, so I should be really careful. Thanks for the reply in advance.
@quadrogong1111

Do it, if it doesn’t work exchange it. If you’re scared you can steam the back seam by the tags to make the stitching more elastic while you stretch steam it then stretch it immediately after

I got an old pabst hat delivery hat from maybe the 1950s with flaps inside should I stretch it with the flaps out or in for the best possible stretch?
@quadrogong1111
3 жыл бұрын
Probably doesn’t matter much, maybe flaps out.. if it’s a cloth cap, it’ll hold a stretch, steaming the back seam first will make the seam more elastic and less prone to splitting, steam the back seam, crank it open,steam it more.. crank some more.. go slowly, and afterwards, if it’s wrinkly, stuff it tightly w paper or tissue and steam it

Thanks, Kevin! This was great! Just stretched a 61 City Sport to 62 using this technique! Now it's on my head feeling great! Thanks for the awesome tips! Hey, had a question. Recently bought a Jiffy hat steamer like yours. How often do you need to clean it and with what? I know they recommend their own cleaning solvent but can other things (vinegar) work? Thanks man!
@quadrogong1111
8 жыл бұрын
+DavesTrumpet we never really clean it, it's something u can do every once in a while, like 1x a year..or once every 2-3 years. I've run them here on and off all day for 5 years and never clean it. more importantly, don't let the water run too low, if it runs out while u are steaming, u damage the thing.. be careful, when u first start it up,wait a minute, let the steam run a while..sometimes it pits out boiling water..when u first start it up,that happens when there is water inside the bottom part,the grey thing..u can let it squirt out on the floor until its finished,but stay away, it's dangerous.. so wait a few seconds,or a minute before u start using it,let the steam run a bit until u are sure no water i coming out. We have old steamers here and never really clean them,they can be cleaned only once in a long while.. i would ay, don't worry about the cleaning too much, u could never clean the thing and use it an hour every day for 5 years,and not a thing would change. More important, don't steam it when the water is almost gone, if u run it dry, it'll run for a bit then burn up..keep enough water in there. and for cleaning..eh. forget it. u can chalk that up to Jiffy trying to sell u more crap.

I used a tea kettle as a steamer which I suspect may pose more risk to damaging my cap than the steamer used in this video as I heat my tea kettle on my stove which produces a lot of heat. I thought I smelled heated a hat smell after I steamed it for 30 seconds. It is what I had, and I used it. I think it may have worked a little but not enough yet. I will buy a hat stretcher now. I bought identical models of a large Scaly caps to one I had that fits my perfectly, but they are a bit tighter than my first cap I bought. My first cap is more comfortable. When I was at the hat store, I tried on several pairs of the caps I was interested in, but all the caps fit a bit tight and an extra-large was too big I am not sure which hat stretcher to buy for my large head. I will take a chance and buy a hat stretcher and hope for the best. Thank you for posting this video. I wish your store were close to me.

@@quadrogong1111 people on the internet said it would mess up the surface which did a little bit .But I found a cure for it .Since it is wool you can use a fur spray cleaner / conditioner which will make the surface less scratchy and make it more uniform.My go to way to size down a cap is to pinch the sweatband in the back and sew through the pinched area .I just got a Stetson Gatsby with 5% cashmere and I love it .Take care .I will visit JJs when I can travel to America. Hi Kevin, I have a question for you, if you don't mind: I just bought a Hanna "vintage" cap in tweed that is slightly too small. (In retrospect, I should have found some place local to try it on rather than ordering online.) I measured and ordered an L, but I'm probably right in between their L and XL. It's biting my forehead. I'm debating between exchanging it for the larger size, or trying to stretch it. Of course, if I modify it, I won't be able to return. What would you advise? This technique is OK with tweed, right? Interestingly I just found this video of John Hanna himself using a very similar technique: kzitem.info/news/bejne/spqDnXV-bJOioqg Although, he looks to be applying it to one of their linen caps.

Yeah, u can stretch it, grab it so u are holding the peak AND the sides of the cap, the fabric..pull over your knee, if u hear a snapping, creaking noise, or feel it.. stop. If that doesn’t work, exchange it for larger..it’ll be fine. U can try it.. if it doesn’t work, change it then, If the next size is too big and you’re between sizes, u buy a “sweat band” from our site jjhatcenter.com for $5 and you’re dome
