My kids are all grown after being homeschooled and I just wanna say…… all those side conversations have special powers all on their own. Too numerous to count (and one can’t get away with that in school) but life long relationships are being built on hearing each other out. Crazy silly comments or bird walks or serious side walks all have immense purpose of you can step back and see the forest. I know and felt so burdened to get them to stop so we could get on with things but teens don’t just talk when asked a question it comes out randomly and only when they are ready to talk do they. Just saying to see value in that as well. My kids, youngest is 29, relate about the funny conversations they had or the “snack run” we made late at night as we read aloud. This simply doesn’t just happen when we want it to.

I feel like your describing me, when I was in public school back in the day. Lol. Bored out of my mind. My older children went to public, and I have heard them say this also. We are blessed as homeschoolers that we can change things up if we see this. 🤗

Another great video! So many great tips for us. The visuals are so good for the interruptions. We are just returning to homeschool from trying private school and I'm going to need to reinstitute some things. I'm going to try the rocket. Telling my son he has interrupted doesn't work. I know better, but we're getting back into our routine. I know that a visual works better because the verbal just creates a knee jerk reaction of them claiming they didn't, lol.

Very true! And the visual helps them “not forget!” It’s right there in front of them!

We also love Wordle and Globle and have found success in either starting the day with those to wake the brain up, or using them as brain breaks/rewards during the day. I have also just sent my son to ride his bike around the neighborhood.

Yes! I had a friend with a much more active ADHD kid than my own, and she gave her kid a physical activity break every 45 minutes! I’ve seen those bouncy exercise balls to be used as chairs to help with that as well.

I always love your videos. I make sure my kids are far away in the house to watch without stopping. My daughter doesn’t want to do school and tries to race through it. Then she gets frustrated because she has to redo it. When she is done she is always bored. 🥱 I would motivate her with candy but I don’t want bad habits.

If she needs some sort of incentive, the star chart I’ve talked about means she can earn stars and then the rewards can be whatever you want for a certain amount of stars! 😉

@@OurHOMEschoolPlanI am thinking about my daughter. She would guzzle down all the dum dums that her grandpa gave her. She is the one that will binge and purge even when she was a toddler. I told her that she needs braces one day and to get used to less suckers and such. I remember my 4th grade teacher giving us jolly ranchers when we took standardized tests. Nobody choked either. What a concept. 😮😅

Great video as always but I want to add one more reason. Lack of sleep. My two youngest don't sleep well no matter what we do so one was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea and the other is awaiting a sleep study. We are also trying to improve our sleep routines. Not sleeping well leads to inattention and moodiness too.

Good one! Sleep apnea on children is rough! I know another little boy who has that and the poor guy falls asleep in church and is a little snorer! 😴 but I feel so bad for him bc I know he literally cannot help being so tired! And we know how sleep deprivation makes US loopy!! 🤪

I agree with you, that I think ADHD is over-diagnosed. And that is as someone who worked in the schools (as an SLP) and someone with ADHD-Inattentive. My son also has ADHD-inattentive and I knew it well before he received an official dx. We've chosen not to medicate. We have that visual timer, and it is great. I also suggest a gym interval timer. You can set it to vibrate or beep in serving intervals from seconds to minutes. It really helped my son when he needed an external cue to refocus or come out of a "daze" without me having to nudge him or say "focus". You can also get a timer that has different set timers on different sides (e.g. 2, 3, 5, 10, 25, etc) and you set it by turning it and that is a great incentive to motivate dopamine-disordered ADHD brains. We have the same roles for screentime- no video games during the week, and no screens until 3:30. I give my son a "Friday Night Free Night" and that was fine for awhile, but recently he asked for a rare weekend of more time online with his friends and I have it to him and that was a mistake. Now it's been a hassle weekend and I'm going to have to return to set screen times on Sat/Sun where it wasn't an issue before.

Yes! The cube timer…we have that one too and it is a great one! Gym interval timer….interesting! So it’s normal use is like for circuit training but you use to help your son “snap out of it” if he’s daydreaming?
