The Golden Ratio is basically setting your delay times in a Fibonacci series. Each succeeding time is 1.618 times the previous one. This creates a smooth reverb like effect. I've tried this on my Lexicon PCM 81 with 6 delay lines and it works very well.

The "Gold Ratio" on the Volante refers to a ratio of the distance of the head spacing in which the repeats would not overlap each other as the repeat to infinity, with a bias toward head #1. If you turn up the repeats, you will hear the first few repeats, and then the repeats begin to sound a bit like a washy reverb. The Golden Ratio setting was first implemented by Strymon on their DIG digital delay emulation pedal. The "Silver Ratio" is the same concept, but with a bias toward the 4th head.

Very tasty playing from Dan. The Golden ratio setting refers to the the interval between the repeats such that the subsequent notes do not occur at the same time (or at least not until a very large number of repeats have occurred ) thus giving a wash of subsequent notes with no discernible 'pulse' or tempo. Supposedly plants stack their branches moving up the stem accordingly to avoid too much overlap and thereby maximising sunlight capture for photosynthesis. Apologies if that is just too geeky .

Been using the Dawner Prince Boonar for about a year, and absolutely love it! I’ve been thinking about getting a Belle Epoch Deluxe, as I don’t have an Echoplex style pedal... but I think the Volante is the direction I’m going to head. I’m enamored with the Echorec tone, but the Space Echo tape delay is awesome- and add to that all the other features, it seems like a perfect choice. One thing I’m excited to try is- using the Chase Tone Secret Preamp in front of it, as I find it to be the most incredible EP3 style preamp that I’ve heard... could be magic! Thanks again for the insight and great introduction to a truly epic piece of kit! I do think I’ll lose a few days though, noodling with the sound on sound feature! Sounded amazing!

One of the reasons I love you guys so much is the joy and love for playing the guitar that you bring to these videos. I've watched the sound on sound part over and over and over - where Mick hits the pause button and Dan laughs gleefully. Not only does that pause effect sound wicked, but Dan's reaction to it makes me laugh every time. Fantastic video mates! Just ordered mine and dispensing with my other delays. I'm going to be a johnny knowitall and remind you that in mathematics, two quantities are in the golden ratio if their ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. The figure on the right illustrates the geometric relationship. Expresed algebraically, for quantities a and b with a > b > 0, a + b a = a b = def φ , Dan - that was the best intro you have ever done, I do believe.

Got mine yesterday and literally only had time to put it on my board and head off to my gig. So my first impressions of the Volante were truly trial by fire. I love it. It's the delay pedal I've been waiting years for. And to me, the spring reverb sounds really good, of course it's not a big sky or blue sky, but it sounds better than the reverb pedal I was previously using, so the Volante replaced three pedals on my board and elevated my sound. I love it. The end.

Have been messing about with the BED and Boonar since getting them both on the board. The BED is pure absolute magic as seems to be common knowledge, but I have been completely impressed with how inspiring the Boonar is. I think what is key with the Boonar is getting the internal gain setting matched to your signal, and I think the "original" setting is far far superior to the "modern" setting. It breathes a lot better. There are so many nuanced interesting sounds inside the Boonar, it has exceeded my relatively high expectations.

Amazing how with so many of these classic FX they just got them "right" in the beginning. Vintage fuzz's, OD's, echos, mods. The Volante is incredibly tempting. It sounds amazing! This is the dilemma - breaking the gear acquisition cycle. Do I have a delay pedal? Yes, I have several - including two of the Strymon pedals you mention. Can any of them do what the Volante will do? (Rhetorical - the Volante exists because Strymon did the research and identified a market opportunity.) My solution - spend more quality time with the delays I have and work to get the most out them. There will be no shortage of sexy products in the future that you gentlemen will review on TPS. I must firm up my resolve and resist temptation. There will be a time when I succumb to weakness , but not now. Not now! (Holds fist defiantly in the air.)

The sound on sound is simulating turning the erase head off. The Roland 301 had this feature and I seem to remember some versions of Echoplexs doing this. Either that or folks put switches on the erase head. The 301 also had a CE1 Chorus built in. I really like the head buttons on the Strymon. As Mick says, much more intuitive. I worked at a Roland dealer in the 70s and could never remember which switch position did what. The stereo is spectacular. I could see just using this at a mild setting instead of a wet dry rig to get spread. I just recently started playing with the stereo outs on my HOF into two amps but this is even bigger sounding. I can only imagine what you two were going though in the room.

This is utterly MAGNIFICENT! A stunning episode of an amazing show. And, i think i have a better question... Gents, take a long look in the (rear view/wing) mirror and ask yourselves this: Isn't the big picture that echo/delay/reverb is really the only pedal that matters, the one pedal to rule them all? All that other stuff wah, drive, chorus 🙄etc is just there to support the Queen of Effects. The D&M is a stunning o'drive but listen at approx 1.05.45 when Mick switches off the delay. If you want drive, just turn the amp up. 🦉🦉🤷🏼♂️🦉

I thought I heard you say “Golden Ratio” referring to the repeats on the Volante. That has to do with a mathematical series of numbers called the Fibonacci numbers. Nerdy. Long and the short of it is it occurs in nature quite a bit in how plants grow ... the shape of a nautilus shell ... NERDY ... it’s a pleasing ratio that just seems to work. It sounded great on the Volante! Or ... I misheard you. Great show!!!

Related: Check out the Golden Ratio (Phi) compressor pedal from the guys at Crazy Tube Circuits. More affordable 1176-style optical circuit that sounds just as good as the Cali 76 (at least, I assume... I couldn't afford the Cali 76 haha).

While the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence are related, the golden ratio predates Fibonacci by a couple millenia. If we are going to be nerdy and pedantic.

Really appreciate the db meter placement guys. Thank you. I really do find it helpful to have an idea of the volume at which you are achieving these tones

Volante is nice sounding indeed, but am I alone in actually preferring the Boonar (and also the Belle Epoch) sound by quite a lot! To my ears the Boonar has more depth and sounding way more close to the analog units. I'm very impressed indeed. Cheers,

There was more bass in it. Wonder if one could achieve the same by turning up the bass and the volume for the Volante. Interesting!

Agreed. The Boonar is going to be a tough pedal to beat - it does the echorec thing better than anything else I've ever heard (besides an actual Binson).

I noticed that, too. The Belle Epoch Deluxe and the Boonar both sound far better than the Volante. As for EP3 Echoplex tones, the BED is probably as close to the original as a pedal can ever get (I have used an EP3 for years). And it's far more convenient and maintenance free. It would be interesting to hear a comparison of the Boonar and the Catalinbread Echorec. The Volante has failed to sell me, although I adore some of its features.

@@JP-kf7bs There was a previous TPS video about the Binson. Both the Boonar and the Catalinbread appeared there.

My favourite thing about receiving my new custom iem’s wasn’t listening to my music but listening to this video, glorious through Jerry Harvey Roxanne’s. My experience of TPS has instantly transformed. It’s a y’s so much about the care you put in to recording that it sounds so so good! Also thanks for introducing me to Joey Landreth! More slide specific and lap steel specific content would be incredible, maybe get Robert Randolph in? Cheers, keep it up, Rob x

A note about the Timeline comments: In fact, the Timeline can simulate many patterns of multi-head delay in its Dual mode. Also, it is possible to get a convincing drum echo tone by adjusting the low-end roll off within the menu. Fabulous video...Thanks, Dan & Mick!

"Only get one chance with me" SAME. And for me it was the Belle Epoch Deluxe, here. Sent it back even if it sounded nice, but it just wasn't working properly mechanically and there were functions essential to what I needed it to do. But, I'm happier with the Volante tbh, al the way. This thing has captured my imagination. I've had it for 2 weeks and it's already essential to my new band, haha.

Man the Belle Epoch has magic in it. Almost everything you played has its own thing. Just wish that box (the Epoch) could tap tempo

With the Strymon vs the RE-201, I think you were looking for heads 2 and 3 on the Strymon. That’s what it sounded like you had the RE-201 set on. It’s setting 9 on my RE-20, and far and away my favourite. It’s kind of eight and dotted eight together. Lovely playing, and great sounds.

I have gone through many, many delays looking for the one that sends me off playing without much fussing about. I don't care for the top end stuff of digital delays, but analog delays can have their own issues. That Strymon sounds great. Nothing is going to touch that Space Echo, though.
