Good stuff David! Had not really used the rice hulls much, however on a recent batch of wheat beer 50/50 (2row/wheat malt), I used them with great success! Good advice! Cheers! 🍻

Hi David, i brewed your Juicy IPA yesterday and had a slightly stuck mash and a slow sparge, i think down to the Pilsner malt being crushed too fine, as you suggested i stopped the sparge after 2 slow litres and gave the grist bed a good stir for a couple of minutes, could hear the water falling through the grist bed into the GF kettle almost immediately i started stirring, almost hit the numbers, 1.052 instead of 1.053 but a decent brew day after all, the wort looked very nice and its fermenting away vigorously as i type...thanks for this recipe...

Great stuff Gary. 1 point of gravity is nothing to worry about at all :) Sounds to me like you cracked it nicely.

Thanks for posting. I use oat husks every time following advice I saw some time ago from Tube Dinoz. Never had a problem now, even with an overnight slow ramp recirculation brew from 15 to 75 C; eficiency went through the roof! Cheers.

@@DavidHeathHomebrew slight addendum to that. I now do wet grain conditioning and recommended that at every opportunity. Of course, you need to get whole grains and not already milled.

I got my very first stuck sparge the other day with 14 pounds of US 2 Row, and it sucked took.a lot of fiddling to get it unstuck. Will never do that again without rice hulls. But I will say yay for whole leaf hops they do a great job filtering the wort as it goes into the fermenter. That batch is happily bubbling its way along. But never knew a ton of 2 row would get so badly stuck

I will say that, I was testing out a different way of doing the mash and while it did get stuck I salvaged it im not sure if 2 row just doesn't offer that high of a gravity or if its just the stuck sparge that did it but I Wass shooting for 1.055-1.060 I got 1.041.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I was just about to order some rice hulls & see they sell crushed, uncrushed & fine crush. Which one do I use to prevent a stuck sparge? I instinct tells me uncrushed.

Hi, yes uncrushed :) Not a stupid question :)

Hi David. Do you have a preference between rice hulls over oat husks ? I understand they are supposed to do the same thing and wanted to ask before I order one or the other. Cheers Jerry 🍺

I have never used oat husks but I understand that in some countries they are easier to get. As long as you get the job done :)

I use a credit card to set the gap. Its a great starting point at the least but I find this needs no further adjustment for many people.

Hi David, I am a bit confused on how to actually sparge with the grainfather. Grainfather themselves say that after lifting the mash cage to let all the mash drain out before sparging...this bit I do. But then it is not so clear. The say to then sparge but always leave about 1cm of liquid above the grain bed....if I do this sparging takes about 15mins, and my efficiency is low. So, recently after adding 1 litre of sprage water I let that drain through before adding the next litre, this has taken sparge time up to about 40mins and efficiency up to 80%. But, should I do that?
@DavidHeathHomebrew

+Andy N A couple of things here. It is best to not let all water to drain out of the grain before you start sparging. Let the water level go just below the plate before you start. Then sparge evenly and slowly. Leave a little under the plate before continuing. This should give you less risk with sticking and the better efficiency :)

Hope you do something on mouthfeel (build body in high gravity beer) I always struggle to get the mouthfeel I want.
@DavidHeathHomebrew
7 жыл бұрын
+Vidar Bentestuen Its really down to taste. Try mashing abit higher and experiment with different grain to give mouthfeel. Just avoid wheat in beers that will have extended conditioning time.

Hi David, thank you for the great videos. Can you clarify why Wheat is not good for beers that have extended condition time? Like Imperial Stouts for an example.
@DavidHeathHomebrew

+Jirka Sure. Wheat has a limited time before it starts to turn and go bad. This starts with the flavours going bland. In the end it will taste nasty.
