Great video rob! Queuing up Miyagi now and waiting on Midwest Backpackers! Like some have said curious about the air pad, i would venture a guess that it’s a problem of air temp in the pad in relation to a closed cell pad having very little air in it and a down under quilt using the loft of the down to trap and decrease the convection of your body temp away. Great use of the kingdom tent I have that one for base/car camping. Thanks for sharing and great video!

Much appreciated. The pad is great. It’s just hard at those temps for a pad with that rating. What’s your set up and for what temps?
@coreydelisle4342
3 жыл бұрын
I've had the same experience with a pad when it dipped below about +10F. I think it's the edges of the top of the pad getting cold and conducting toward you. I have a double layer wbbb . When you use a double layer hammock you can't wrap the top quilt around the edges of the pad. Maybe that is it? Multiple quilts did the trick for me down to -1. We don't get many sub zero days here in MA but in theory, my setup is good to -30 or -20.

Guys, I got a WBRR for Christmas. I’m going out on a 55 mile section of the AT in Virginia next week. My plan is to carry my Nemo Tensor insulated pad (so light and small). Temps at night should be high 20s. Don’t want to carry an underquilt. Trying to stay light. Will the Nemo pad alone do the trick?
@coreydelisle4342
3 жыл бұрын
@@MakingMusic4All I can't tell you if it will be good or not. Are you a warm sleeper? I consider myself average, and seem to be able to push my gear 10 past comfort rating and be cold, but safe. From a quick internet search the insulated Tensor is only good to 30, probably on the ground. I suggest setting it up on a 20 deg night and test it out. You don't want to be 25 miles into that hike and be freezing cold.

My winter hammock setup uses the tegiman hammock hot tent, the nice thing about it is it blocks all the wind because walls and doors go to the ground. The wood stove I have for it is nice but not a dependable heat source because it burns for about 1.5 - 2 hours but helps when getting to sleep and waking up.

Good to learn about the sleeping pad, sounds like it really doesn't stack thermally and was simply overwhelmed at those temps. I was happily surprised that the wool blanket didn't compress the down quilts and reduce their insulated values, got to admit I was concerned for you putting what I guessed was a moderately heavy wool blanket on top of light weight down. I believe you said in a prior video that it was being used to protect against water vapor and add insulation. Well done.
@robpelton

I initial concerns with the weight of the blanket as well. Did not end up being a issue in the slightest. I am, however, very impressed on how it mitigated the condensation issue. I just spent 2 night in my backyard testing my gear at low temps. I might suggest if using a pad in a hammock, try the NeoAir Xtherm, the way it reflects your heat makes a big difference but sounds like hundreds of dollars in down worked out. That's what I used, I order a UGQ underquilt during black Friday sale and received just in time to test in some of our lowest temps. By the way enjoy the video, keep the good work.

One big thing to help keep your hands & feet warm is to keep your core warm. I’d your torso is cold, your body will draw blood from your extremities causing them to become cold. Footwear is huge too. you are better off putting the wool blanket under, not over the down layers. The wool blanket will partly compress the down, loss of loft and warmth
@robpelton
3 жыл бұрын
Down compression wasn’t an issue. The system worked very well. Also, layering the blanket inside would have constricted me on the inside. Not to mention the logistics of getting in the hammock with the blanket inside. Also, peeing out of the hammock would’ve quite a bit more challenging. The blanket also kept my down dry from condensation.
