My mom always gets really emotional about this song not just because it’s beautiful, but it really was groundbreaking when it came out. My mom was in college when this came out and she says its impact on her and her friends - and a lot of young women - was seismic. At that point it was really expected that young women get married either right out of college or instead of even going to college and that line about being caged on a shelf and “I’ll never learn to be just me first, for myself” resonated so deeply with her and a lot of women, who just weren’t supposed to ask for that sort of right to self-determination. Trust that this song was revolutionary - and even more poignant than it sounds - when it came out.

I appreciate that you don't just focus on the arrangement (which I agree is gorgeous), as most gentleman reviewers do - but you also address the lyrics, which are profound. One of the most telling things about this song, which enhances its melancholy to me, is the repeating refrain "we'll marry." I think it speaks to the doubts, the turmoil, that many free-thinking young women experience. But yet they go in with their eyes wide shut (if you will) and get married anyway - due to equal parts of what is expected of them by family and peers vs the fear of taking the road less traveled (life without marriage). Loved this review!

Her dad was half of Simon and Schuster the third largest publisher in the U.S. She used to hang around with Judy Belushi in the Hamptons. Carly was married to James Taylor and Judy was John Belushi’s wife. Their husbands were well documented hard drug users. They were all so talented. This was her first single. A guy actually wrote the lyrics and she the music.

ANTICIPATION is Carly's masterpiece (in my opinion), and she had a lot of great hits, including one of the finest Bond Theme songs; Nobody Does It Better - from The Spy Who Loved Me(1977). Her marriage to James Taylor made them a Folk/Rock Super Duo., until their divorce.

Recently watched an interview with Carly where she sings and discusses this song. She grew up in wealthy New York Society. Her Dad is Simon of Simon and Schuster fame. She said her dad smoke and drank himself alone in the dark in his room in their house. Her mother had a lengthy affair with her children's tutor right in front of her husband. No attempt to hide it whatsoever. Meanwhile, her dad pined away for his wife. Carly saw this going on and said if this is what "love" and marriage is-no thank you.

Poignant too, since her marriage to James Taylor was unsatisfactory and I recall her wryly commenting to Rolling Stone that "if only Taylor did as much fathering as [she] did mothering", things would be better. Taylor had addiction issues, but also was evasive with her when she wanted to nail things down. They remain a great combination and still show unresolved possibilities. She recounted a phone conversation with him since they divorced and she asked him why he didn't think more about her. And he said "Carly if I thought about you when I wanted to, I'd never get anything done". I guess we aren't really meant to know what goes on in people's lives but Carly is single after another 2 relationships and it seems better that way. An astounding woman.

Although Wikipedia says that Carly's co-writer wrote the lyrics and she wrote the melody, she's made comments that suggest she had at least some input into the subject matter of the song. In any case, it's something that I'm sure a lot of people can relate to - that quote by Thoreau comes to mind how most people live lives of "quiet desperation" - and it's so achingly honest not only in its lyrics but how Carly musically bares her soul with her vocals.
@ocheltree1
2 жыл бұрын
DJ Holte, she must have. Had I not read your comment, I would have continued to assume it was her story and she wrote the lyrics, as she spoke in great detail about this in an interview I saw of her give on her memoirs. When listening to the words I was picturing it like she spoke about, it all fit...at least to me. I guess she could have told the lyricist the story and that person summarized it very well in the song. Either way, that "quiet desperation" you spoke of is something we all relate to, Carly makes you feel it to your bones. Enjoyed your thoughtful comments, DJ. Namaste.

Great reaction to a classic '70s song. Her annunciation was so clear there was no need to look up lyrics. As for marriage it has to be with the right person, no just a temporary crush or infatuation with a pretty face. I don't know if soul mates are real but it has to be that depth of feeling. For it to work each person has to care more about the other's happiness than their own that they're willing to give up anything for them.
