That doesn't really make any sense though, does it? How does that help a viewer understand what is going on? It doesn't. The fighter told him about 4 things that he noticed. When the new round began cosell told the audience what HE-Cosell -had noticed. The color man was astonished. Brawl? When? He lost their first fight... he’s boxing an exhausted Duran here... You do know the 1st and 2nd fights are fought within 6:7 months of each other??? YET DURAN LOOKS ABOUT 10 YEARS OLDER!! Exhausted! FACT! Leonard was out of order, showed his true bad-loser-massive-ego personality... Duran wins when both 100%... Duran celebrates and parties, puts on lots of weight, quickly spending his biggest ever payday, AND THEN deflated, depressed, considering to quit boxing SRL, crafty and pulling the media strings, although he’d lost, being the American golden boy... he dictated WHEN the rematch would take place, if Duran wanted it... he needed it, and Ray Leonard knew it, and exploited it, and that’s WHY Leonard looks AMAZING and so much better, he’s fighting an exhausted Duran... who’s looking 10 years older n sluggish YET it’s only 6/7 from his win over Leonard... EASY looking great against a guy who has spent the previous 8 weeks in a sauna, not eating, gorging on laxatives etc... FACT! Not my opinion.... ALSO FACT THAT LEONARD chose retirement before having the balls to fight a sluggish Hagler.... Duran fought Hagler in ‘83.... Leonard fought Hagler in ‘87.... 4 years later... 4 years Marvin was calling out SRL and Ray Leonard was ducking and running, even retiring before seeing Hagler had lost his edge, THEN MIRACULOUSLY decided to come back and fight Hagler!! Remember, Hagler was calling out Ray for FOUR YEARS... Hearns stepped in to fight Marvin in’85.... STILL TOOK SRL and his Lion Heart another 2 years to find his gloves!!! Leonard is a master of his legendary status! He’s talked SO MUCH ABOUT THE ‘No Mas’ fight THAT many casuals are unaware Leonard got his arse kicked earlier in the year by Duran... and will belittle Mayweather for not fighting Manny Pac-Man two years sooner, BUT FORGETS TO MENTION HE RAN FROM HAGLER TIL MARVIN WAS NOT THE FIGHTER THAT FOUGHT HEARNS 2 years prior in ‘85!! He has admitted that losing to Duran was devastating and never vowed to lose again... he beat Hearns fair n square ONCE, had admitted that Tommy won the draw... should’ve got the decision he says... therefore the only man he beat when they were 100% was Hearns... He wasn’t the GREAT he looked... Same as Lewis? Makes out as though Tyson was better in 2002 than he was in ‘90 , when losing to Douglas... Lewis forgets to tell his audience that he was STILL an AMATEUR boxer in 85, 86, 87, 88 when Tyson was at his PROFESSIONAL PRIME! Lewis didn’t win his Olympic gold til ‘88... Tyson lost in ‘90 and was practically finished! Forgets to mention that when asked about beating Tyson. Forgets to say how Mike was far better in ‘90, and that Douglas beat a far better Tyson than he did!! SRL and Lennox Lewis are the most gloating ‘Greats’... Lewis didn’t fight Holyfield til ‘99?... yet watch Bowe/Holyfield 3... Boxing commentators, other professionals, pleading for Holyfield to retire because he’s FINISHED, has nothing to prove, shouldn’t be ALLOWED a boxing license if Evander insists on continuing to fight... AND, yet, we see the big tough guy Lennox Lewis GLOATING about his fights with Evander as though Holyfield is at his peak!! Leonard and Lewis both craftily orchestrated their records far more than Mayweather ever did... SRL and Lennox Lewis talk their careers up like they were big bad lions but actually, very conveniently, they managed to avoid ALL THE BEST.... at their BEST! No offence intended, fella. Was once told that, in boxing, mass-opinion isn’t necessarily FACT... ‘Everybody says Leonard was ‘the Greatest ‘ of his generation! But was he? Cheers

@@bluefluke9647 Except Leonard wasn’t fighting his usual style in the first fight and Duran got in his head so Duran wasn’t exactly fighting a 100% Leonard either.and yet Leonard didn’t get knocked out and he stood toe to toe with the knockout artist and would then beat him a third time on top of that and by then Sugar was out of his prime as well. Hell he even defeated Tommy Hearns who would knock out Duran in two rounds and then tie with him again(I know Leonard said that Tommy won that fight but that can still be debated by watching the fight it self). I bet money that a prime Sugar Ray who fought his usual style and was mentally cool would have beat Duran and outboxed him.Also while you can make an argument that he ran from Haggler he still ended up fighting a very dangerous Haggler who could have demolished anyone at that time. The fact that he came out of the fight in decent condition is astounding.And on top of that he beat Wilfred Benitez who also beat Duran. Edit: Also the fact that even if it was a weakened Duran. Leonard still mentally broke him and made one of the scariest boxers ever just quit in the middle of the ring. So even if it was a 100% Duran. How could you know if Leonard still wouldn’t have made him break?

@mcharleau Yeah I think people just have a bias for Duran a little. I do believe that Sugar ducked Marvin a good bit but he still beat Hearns, Held his own against Hagler, and beat Duran Twice. Duran had really sloppy habits that fucked him up in the ring but he still was a great. I absolutely don’t want anyone to think that I hate Duran but I just think that when you look at the evidence, he was the weakest king at of the bunch. Still a great but couldn’t hang with Hagler and Hearns.

SRL? Mastered the style of exploitation and manipulation!! Duran kicked Leonard’s arse 6/7 months before this act of exploitation by SRL... yet Duran looks 10 years older... WHY? Leonard’s superior talent?? Ok. So why didn’t Ray want the DECIDER with Duran, if he’d win so easy, prove to the world by winning 2-1... he didn’t! Why? Leonard dictated when this fight took place, KNOWING that Duran was unable to make weight in such a short space of time and be ring-sharp... DURAN IS NO QUITTER!! He’s exhausted. FACT. SRL quit, retired from boxing, in an attempt to avoid fighting a sharp Hagler... Duran fought Hagler in 83, Hearns in ‘85... LEONARD was running UNTIL he knew Hagler was beatable AND STILL ONLY AGREED TO FIGHT MARVIN if he dictated details? Time, place, weight, ring size, even down to choosing the referee. So Duran had balls to fight Hagler at middleweight 4 years before Ray ran and ducked Hagler.... if SRL fought Hagler in ‘85 like Hearns did, at middleweight, JESUS, he got beat up by lightweight Duran...HAGLER would’ve walked through him. SRL admitted that after losing to Duran, he hurt so bad, he truly considered retiring and not boxing... His ego took a battering... he saw an opportunity in Duran being overweight, out of money, with nobody to fight, needing a payday, and Ray had the TV money pull/power, in USA, over Duran, although he’d lost their first bout... SRL was sneaky, not dignified, showed zero sportsmanship, purely exploiting Duran.... HOWEVER, at least he admits this now... SRL admits and has admitted, that he couldn’t beat Duran if Duran was 100%... and that’s why, I guess, he avoided such an easy 3rd fight so quickly... Leonard is looking great here because he’s fighting an exhausted Duran...

@@williamdavis8855 I agree, the modern era doesn't even come close to the 80s. The likes of Leonard, Hearn, Hagler and Duran. All their fights with each other will never be got again. Fighters also fought far more often back then, hence the insane records. Unfortunately boxing is different today, tis even more corrupt and fighters are protected and fight less often. That's not Loma's fault. I'd love to see him fight Tank or Haney and hopefully we'll get to see such fights before it's too late. I just think Loma is a phenomenal boxer and his style is a great example of how the sport has evolved...and given that he and Leonard fought at a similar weight, I didn't think it's blasphemous to make a comparison. 😂 It doesn't take away from Leonard's greatness and I agree he has a long way to go to achieve such legendary status or to be held in as high a regard.

SRL? True Greats? Out-boxed Duran? Very easy when Duran hadn’t had time to train! Thanks to Leonard determining when the rematch took place! Age difference of Duran in the first fight and Duran in this fight? He looks ten years older, yet both fights happened within 6/7 months. Just look at the number of views THIS fight has compared to the first fight. True Great? You do know that Duran fought Hagler in ‘83... Leonard ran from Hagler for FOUR YEARS... retired from boxing, with Marvin calling him out, ONLY making a ‘Comeback ‘ coincidentally WHEN Hagler has lost his edge.... LEONARD best Duran so easy? Why not have the easy decider and pocket a huge payday??... Duran would never be manipulated and exploited like that again. Therefore, he’d be mentally and physically fit, like in the first fight, and WIN... SRL has spoken about the ‘NO MAS’ fight so much and beating Hagler... but Duran can’t speak English and not exactly media gold, and Hagler lives in Italy and can’t be arsed with it all, therefore Ray has harped in about beating these two greats, that some mates of mine that are casual boxing big fight fans, were UNAWARE the first fight took place.... and SRL will hardly tell the world how he ran from Marvin for 4 years. SRL was so powerful, even after losing to Duran, he pulled the strings. Duran wasn’t OLD in this fight, but looked it due to exhaustion, after struggling to make weight in such a short space of time... thanks to the ‘sportsmanship’ of SRL... Ask yourself why he didn’t want a Third fight, and win the trilogy, prove himself if so easy... He knew he couldn’t beat a 100% Duran... and he never did!!!

@EinsteinKnowedIt

No, there is now an intense debate I'm having with myself between Ray Leonard or is it today's Terrence Bud Crawford or is it yesteryear's 1940s Sugar Ray Robinson? See Bud Crawford is yesteryears Sugar Ray Robinson incarnate. See, I've never seen since Ali anchor punch to Liston such a punch as Bud Crawford snuck on Spence for that second knockdown. That is the punch only a DRAGON MASTER GUNSLINGER could pull off.

Sole Trek his great footwork and great handspeed worked hand in hand. ray's jab really was long and straight. this was a clinic for how a tall fighter should keep an inside fighter away. people think being tall is a great advantage in a division, however most can't keep guys off of them. ray made it look easy.

That’s what you call “making a guy quit” “say uncle”, getting outclassed by a strategy-fighter. Sugar Ray trained a lot differently for this fight. He strength-trained more, and did more hand speed training also. On Duran’s best day he wouldn’t have beat Leonard on that day!

@@karl24-75 outclassed.....right. that is why Duran is known in boxing circles as the higher ranked fighter, all time. and that is why, when both were at their peak performance, Duran won. Cosell asked Ray after the fight in Montreal on why Ray didn't move, even after Dundee had pleaded with Ray to do so.....Ray said "because I couldn't, what Duran was doing, wouldn't allow me to move around the ring, so I had to fight him". 2nd fight, Ray gets an out of shape Duran and starts to mock him, Duran had been fucked over by his own people in allowing this fight, decided he wasn't going to stand there and watch Ray make a mockery out of the sport. To this day, Ray still says that the 'win' is not satisfying to him......it's because he knows deep down, he didn't beat the best of Duran, he only beat the name.

@@blite13 , you are another incredible historical revisionist whose biases must dim both your mind and your eyesight. Only Ray Robinson and Thomas Hearns truly rival Leonard as the best welterweights we have seen in the last 40 -50 years, so SRL was among the Super Elite and an undisputed ATG, (as was Dutan ) yet you still feel the need to conjure up ridiculous ass excuses as to why Duran - an experienced and seasoned professional boxer was not ready to fight his best fight AFTER HAVING 5 MONTHS to get ready even though he told Cosell that the 2nd fight would be a much easier fight and he would knock Leonard out. I could go on and on, but I bet you already heard the one about the man convinced against his will...

@@karl24-75 that's right, Duran was 70+ fights and had just won his biggest fight and wanted to enjoy it. Then, as Ray says, he saw Duran getting fat. Ray admits his strategy was to get an out of shape Duran. What kind of fighter wants to fight his biggest rival when the rival isn't ready? Ray admits it himself and this is why it will NEVER be satisfying to Ray HIMSELF. Because Ray knows he didn't fight the best of Duran that night and when he did, he lost.

He tried to. Duran caught him and hurt him early. It's hard to get on your bike the way Leonard did in the second fight when you're hurt. Duran also did a more effective job cutting off the ring in the first fight, which prevented Ray from getting out of his punching range. In this fight he spent too much time simply following Ray around.
@bryangan2224
4 жыл бұрын
It's not like he could - Duran was countering him sharply at range and punishing him in the infighting range. More than anything, this fight went the way it did because of Duran's terribly conditioning. Ray himself said that this was the plan all along, to get a weakened Duran on fight night by catching him in the middle of his partying. Duran was well over 200 pounds and he had to get to 147 - that's a QUARTER of your body weight. You can see it from the start of the fight. Duran lamely goes to touch gloves, whereas in the first fight he couldn't wait to go and hurt Leonard. Dude doesn't even wanna be there. It's not like this fight was totally unwinnable either, Duran had a couple of rounds on the scorecards, and the fight wasn't even halfway over.
@Matt-uv8rz

@@bryangan2224 There's some mythologizing on both sides of this. Leonard fans have bought the myth that Leonard simply brawled with Duran in the first fight, thereby making the strategic error of fighting Duran's fight. That isn't consistent with the fight tape. Leonard clearly tried to box and counter Duran in theor first fight. Duran just outboxed him and outfought him. On the other end, while Duran was clearly not in peak condition for the second fight, I don't think he was as grossly out of shape as some claim. I don't doubt he was probably in the 180 range maybe as high as 190. Bit I think the stuff about him being north of 200 before this fight is hyperbole.
@bryangan2224
4 жыл бұрын
@@Matt-uv8rz Indeed. But if you actually watch the fight, it's not so much that Leonard tried hard to brawl Duran, it's more like he just couldn't get away and kept getting sucked into the infighting. His attitude towards Duran is one, but strategically, Dundee and camp also felt that Duran as a pressure fighter could not fight off the back foot and they should therefore press him there. They also didn't figure that a natural lightweight could bully their fighter into the ropes so easily. On the other hand, he did quite well in the 2nd fight, not by dancing outside of Duran's range, but by throwing fast and exiting cleanly whenever Duran did manage to catch up with him. His outfighting is not that great, Leonard always struck me as more of a puncher than a boxer, but it did frustrate Duran to the point of quitting. Nobody knows who would have won if Duran had been in better physical and mental shape, but it does have to count as a big factor, because those are really big deals. They are both all time greats, obviously, though I rank Duran higher than the rest of the Four Kings/Fab Four (most historians do) for pretty clear reasons.
