Every time I hear callers like this, I am reminded of the monumental abyss of ignorance and uncritical thinking that we, the human species, are yet to crawl out of. Many of us have reached the top -- a sensible, reasonable understanding of the universe and how to be present and good in the company of our fellow human beings and other creatures -- but so many, so many are still crawling up the walls, doing their best. Shows like The Atheist Experience, which has been airing for years and years, are some of the best ropes we have to help people come up and think better. Callers like these might be discouraging, but I try to focus on the undeniable audience this show has, which will contain people who are inspired to be more intellectually honest. Ultimately, that's what gives me hope; I try to think of the people watching.

Darwin published his book on the 24th of November, 1895. However, evolution was proposed as far back as c. 600 BCE (Anaximander of Miletus) , but age has NOTHING to do with the truth of ANY claim, because it's the testability and predictability that demonstrates a claim's truth. Plus, we admit that Darwin got some stuff wrong in his book, but you can't seem to admit anything's wrong with your book because you seem to think progress is a bad thing because it's a type of change
@almightyshippo1197
9 жыл бұрын
It's funny that a lot of Creationists seem to think that Darwins book is the ONLY information about evolution, and ignore the rest of the research that has happened since then. It always baffles me when they try to claim things along those lines, just like this caller. To continue what you said, yes, Darwin got things wrong, and we moved past that. It may have been a great starting point for research on evolution, but all good theories start out with some problems that get worked out as they get refined. I don't know of any hypothesis that started out with 100% accuracy. It just doesn't happen. ^_^

Religion in the UK is just for show, kind of like the monarchy. They keep it around because 1) it's pretty, and 2) it's too complicated (to the point of not being worth the bother) to extricate it from public life. Very few people actually believe in it anymore. Redundant churches all over the country are being turned into housing, shops, restaurants, etc. In the meantime, the US without a state religion has religions with a stranglehold on its government, who whine about persecution every time they're forestalled from imposing their doctrines on others, and who would never, ever elect an atheist to any Federal office despite a Constitutional provision prohibiting any religious test.
@the-chillian

***** It amuses me no end that you apparently think I'm British. It's not even a poorly-kept secret anymore that the Church of England has long ceased to be a bona fide religion, and is instead a cultural institution. As long ago as the 1980s, a TV program like _Yes, Prime Minister_ only had to semi-joke that half the bishops were atheists. I do not doubt that the number is actually higher today. I recall a massive controversy that erupted round about 1980 when a candidate for the diocese of Durham publicly announced prior to his consecration that the virgin birth and resurrection were fictional. Those who were yet under the impression that the C of E was a religion were shocked and mounted a massive letter-writing campaign. But the establishment didn't care in the least, and the consecration went ahead even as protesters marched outside the cathedral. Nowadays, this kind of thing isn't even surprising. I'll say this though: I have long been convinced that anyone who cannot acknowledge a plainly obvious yet unpleasant truth about their nation, taking it as a personal affront when anything less than admirable is pointed out about it no matter how true, is no true patriot. If you can only love some fictitious, falsely perfect version of your country, your patriotism is equally false. A true patriot acknowledges his country's faults and strives to correct them. What I said about the role of religion in American public life is hardly a strawman. So you can take your own rant about hypocrisy and read it back to yourself while looking in your own mirror.

Very odd accent from the caller.. I can't identify it for sure, but think it might be eastern European... Estonia? Poland? I don't think he was brought up British. Please Note: Creationism is still very rare in UK, despite lots of American money being spent to push it up the agenda here, even to the point of taking advantage of new legislation allowing "faith" schools to use public money... (yes, that's a cock-up.....we do have SOME right-wing idiots here, and a few of them have managed to insinuate their way into our present government.)

True. I'm from the UK and I've never actually met a young Earth creationist. I hadn't even heard about them until I was about twelve. I think us Brits are largely secular minded anyway and religious worship is a genuinely private matter.

***** I might just as well ask you what on earth is the attraction of Fundamentalist Christianity as practised by the Creationist faction of USA? It happens we have an immigrant population of Muslims in the UK because of the British Empire, which had previously existed in many Islamic parts of the world... (so did France, BTW, which has even more Muslims than we do because of their previous involvement in North Africa.) Like Europe, and USA, everybody has freedom of religion in UK. But quite why anybody would CONVERT to Islam, I just cannot guess.... .... but I realise there are some people who feel supported by strict religion, instead of merely confined by it. Moreover, it seems the stricter the religion is, the more support they THINK they're getting. [???] It's just the sort of people they are, I suppose...(shrug). I hesitate to call them inadequate to the demands of modern life, but that does seem likely. Then again, as an atheist, I think ALL religious people are making a serious mistake about the nature of reality.... but then, I WOULD think that, wouldn't I? I'm an atheist, and have been since I was about 8, when I looked around myself in Sunday School and thought, "These people are grown-ups, but, worryingly, they believe total rubbish, a mass of lies, when even I, a little kid, can see it's all nonsense!" My attitude to adult authority changed that day, not just my view of religion. Sorry I cannot give you a better explanation. The workings of the minds of the very religious, especially what sucks 'em in from ANOTHER religion, will always be something that makes very little sense to me, because...... *Anybody in a position to compare TWO religions, should be in a better position than most to see they are BOTH total bollocks.* Final point: The number of native British men and women converting to Islam is very low. If you got the idea it was some sort of problem, and you got it from American "documentary" television... which does not enjoy a reputation for accuracy or objectiveness here in UK... then you got a false impression.

***** I'm well aware of the Tennessee shooting. And neither would I refer to Islam as the "religion of peace" as I wouldn't refer to Christianity as the "religion of peace" either. Almost every week? Come on now...

I got tired of reading god, prayer requests and religious posts on facebook, so I left a post "this is not facebook church" I got unfriended and blocked by some of these fanatic Christians just for posting that. Not that I was surprised I actually expected it, and I didn't care they just proved my point

I didn't have a personal experience one time with Jesus. I didn't pray to Jesus and what do you know he didn't appear. Therefore Jesus does not exist. That's this callers logic
