We spent New Years at the beach to ring in 2018!!! In this video I was testing out a new camera and settings. This footage was taken with a Canon XF400 in 4k 60fps 150Mbps using the built in Sunset program mode. You can use this video to test out your new 4K TV that you got from Santa! I didn't get one, sadly. But I'm ready for when I do one day.
I rendered using Adobe Premier Pro CC 2018 at a bitrate of 60 Mbps with no color correction - this is straight off the camera's sensor in 4k. It's also pretty relaxing with the surf audio, so if you are not into cameras, just enjoy the sunset and the beach!
At 7:37 I replay the video at 800% speed.
I was inspired to post this footage after watching Abom79's Adventure Channel cruise video. He has some great sunset footage in his video here: • Caribbean Cruise Vacat... . His travel channel and main channel are fantastic - check them out and subscribe!
Location: Rosemary Beach, Florida
Date: Dec 30, 2017
Temp: in the 60's during the day, much colder after and for New Year's Eve
Raw Footage: 12.7 GB
Rendered Footage: 3.05 GB (due to reduced bit rate)
Audio: Mic used was a Rode NTG4+ connected to the Canon XLR Input 1 on the camera handle. Gain was set around 4 to 5 and is a little low. I did not correct gain in post - it's as is with no effects. The NTG4+ had a dead cat installed, but still picked up some wind noise - it's not too bad so I left it alone. The waves are below the scene and are realtime, except for the sped up part of the video - I just copied over some audio to fill in the 800% segment.
I'm really uncertain about using 4k - I love taking footage in 4k, but the files are large and memory cards and hard drives have not taken that next 'leap' to make it very practical. Most people will watch this in 1080p so there's a very real case to just filming in 1080p and it's much faster to process and render. The render time on this was over 20 minutes and the upload to YT was 3 hours plus....so it's a big lift to process 4k video. If I had gigabit fiber I would not worry about it, but I'm on 6mb upload cable service - makes uploads a problem. I did this overnight, so no big deal, but it's slow!!!
Note: technically there is no reason to film this at 60fps - it's one of the slowest scenes you can film, but I did just because. 24 fps would be fine for a sunset. 60 fps does add some smoothness to the waves, though.
Anyway - hope you enjoy the video - no tractors in this one, but it's pretty satisfying. I plan to post more videos in a Camera Testing playlist for folks learning about video. I've got some more great footage from this beach trip I'll upload over next few weeks. If you are here just for the tractors, you can skip these.
