Hey Mike, Nice job on the HID shootout. Yes, 130 yards is a little short on distance, but you make do with what you've got. Even with the limited range for this shootout, it still shows that there's a difference between ANSI and Chinese lumens. I've got a couple of other lights to add to your next shootout: The Peak Beam Systems, Maxa Beam. The Maxa Beam has used an electronic focusing mechanism for years. The Polarion PF40 The Polarion Night Reaper The Surefire Hell Fighter 3 and the Hell Fighter 4 which has a internal Lipo pack.

85W Ebay Light: I twisted it and it did tighten up the hot spot. I still think it is weaker than the other lights, but for the money, it's a reasonable buy. Lumen rating on lights are like fast food advertisements on TV. The food advertisements look a whole lot different that what is actually served. The same is true on lumen ratings for many HID and LED lights. Thanks for the comments.

Gunda Dinn, Thanks for the post. It is difficult finding a good venue where I live to do beam shot tests. The football field does a good job showing off the beam pattern, but I would agree that is it a little short for evaluating a light's maximum throw. For that reason, I tried to illuminate an electrical tower that was a 1/4 mile away. I need to find a more worthy long distance target. . Regarding lumens, I think a lot of manufacturers exaggerate on the true output. That is why Beam shots show the real thing. HID Ballasts are not 100% efficient. For example, a 50 watt light that boasts a lumen output of 5500 lumen is probably exaggerated. A 50 watt light would probably put out 4500-4800 lumens in my opinion. I would be up to doing another beam shot round with you, pending where you live. It is getting a little cold in Ohio but there's probably a few more mild days available.

Hi. Good video. It would be interesting to compare them to a couple of Nitecore led lights. Regardless of the lumen output I think the leds will be far superior. Not only can they have a very bright hot spot, they also would light up the field at ground level all the way to the grandstand. Just my opinion.

no maxabeam? it has a motorized beam adjuster, and extremely good optics, like laboratory grade optics, entire hollywood uses them as a prop, xfiles, Jurassic park, etc.

Maxa Beam by Peak Beam Systems is a great light. It has been used in a lot of Hollywood movies. It costs more than $2,500.00 new, so not many people (including myself) can afford it. I would love to have one, though.

they have a very good lamp, it has a prolonged bulge, you cannot really buy it anywhere since i think they have them custom made, there is an equivalent 75W lamp with a round bulge that some people use though, anyway, you can get it used, as a lot of people/companies keep them unused, and if its 75W id get it, because everything in it is replaceable, ive read of people getting it for as low as $250 used

Is there any advantage hid lights have over led lights? If not I would rather suspect something like the Thrunite Catapult v6 would hold its own against these ones.

Someone mentioned I should look at the Ace Beam X45, which is an LED light that says it produces 16,500 lumen running off 4x18650 batteries. It is impossible to produce this amount of light based on the voltage and watts produced by these batteries. I built a 20,000 LED light, I should know (I have the build on my Channel). If you look up the output of the XHP70 LED on the CREE website, is says it may only product up to 1650 lumen. If this light has 4 LEDs, that does not add up to 16,500. This is another example of companies exaggerating the actual output of their light (They know the normal person cannot measure it). Buyer Beware

Most people don't own a lux meter to test any given light.Yes manufacturers love to stretch the specs like bubble gum and the Chinese are the worst of the bunch! I saw a shootout between a Acebeam K70 and a HID 85 watt light and the K70 was a clear winner hands down for throw. There will be a new throw king by the end of the year that will surpass the K70,TN 42,etc. so I am holding my breath!

mwstoll The Cree xhp70 is capable of producing up to 4022 lumen at 32 watts per physical die. I can say from personal experience, if you have a driver that can handle the immense current and a good enough sink they absolutely reach 4,000 lumen a piece.

This website below says the LED has a maximum output of 1590 lumen (see below). I would agree, if you have a Driver, a good heat sink and enough battery power, you can power an LED to it's limit. 4 x 18650 batteries is not going to produce anywhere near 23 watts of power. I made a 20,000 lumen LED and I have a heatsink that requires a fan due to the amount of heat produced. Also, I have a lot more battery power driving it than 4 x 18650's (see my KZitem Build). www.arrow.com/en/products/xhp70a-01-0000-0d0bn20e1/cree?PRODUCT+GROUP&gclid=CJ7R8d_DptQCFY6EaQodsq8Evw&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CIjDieDDptQCFVE5Twod9NUGpg.

mwstoll Oh man where have you been I have 18650 batteries that can produce 80 watts a piece minimum. The LG HG2, Sony VTC5, and Samsung 26R all have continuous rated outputs of 20-30Amps, that's 120 watts at full charge. www.cree.com/led-components/products/xlamp-leds-arrays/xlamp-xhp70
