Is it normal for GT500 race car drivers to shift down that fast? It sounds painful to the engine but I don't know anything so could someone explain?

In case you haven't got the answer within 8 years: Racing engines are kept in check by air restrictors or in other series by a rev limit. In both scenarios they can theoretically rev much higher than their rev limiter, epecially on downshifts as there is no pressure in the cylinders from burning fuel. Shifting down early gives you more engine brake, which is useful on a qualifying run. Of course, you risk locking up the rear tires though. However, these GT500 machines had monstrous amounts of downforce so you could do it on a one lap qualifying. And it is more the gearbox that takes the penalty rather than the engine. But after qualifying you could change everything anyway back at those times.

@@Bleifuss88 Some of these drivers like Kogure do it in races also. Painfully raping the gearbox. Most sincere mechanical sympathies.

Aero package that year was probably really good, combine that with the mid-engine layout.
