I always loved the opening to this movie. I remember when I saw the very first Superman movie in 1978. I was 6yrs old. Loved the John Williams Score and naration by Marlon Brando (Jor- El). Back in the day they opened up for Superman 2 with the General. Too bad they didn't keep Brandon Routh as Superman.

People dont give Superman Returns enough credit and it is really a loving homage to Christopher Reeves Superman. One of the few film sequels that actually has the same feel as the original films. I Like the bit with his ship just speeding away from Krypton, was nice how you just slightly put that in. Yes way better than the cinematic version.

I know I am in the minority, but I really like this movie. I liked how they paid homage to the Christopher Reeve movies and made it a continuation of those rather than do a whole reboot, and it was great how they had a dedication to him and his wife. I also loved the Marlon Brando lines that were in it and how Kal-el repeats the lines to his son. There were some things that weren't done well in the movie, but I felt overall that they did a good job with it. I love this alternate opening and feel like it should have been the opening that they released with the film, but I will just edit it and add it into the movie that I have.

Visually, "Superman Returns" was great in blending in both the Salkindverse Superman films and the Golden Age comics, however it suffered from poor scriptwriting and to the fact is that elements of the 2000's were incorporated into the film as opposed to setting this film, let's say in the mid-1980s.
@csh1921
Жыл бұрын
@@rwboa22 Setting the movie in the mid-2000’s as opposed to the mid/late 80’s was due to Singer wanting SR to be a “loose sequel”. Yes, the movie’s essentially a re-telling of Superman 3, but many people either hadn’t seen the first two movies or didn’t remember them. There was no 80’s nostalgia in 2006 so moving the timeline forward was the best decision. The rest of the movie….. well….. that’s a different can of worms.

This movie had such potential. It has some great Superman moments, most notably the scene in which Superman lowers the car; reflective of the artwork of the original comic. But unfortunately it suffered too much from being a great homage to the original Reeve-era films than a successful reboot of the character. The subplot about Kal-el and Lois having a child for instance could have been explored more. That said, who can not feel great when John Williams awesome music sets the scene.
@TheLAGopher

I agree. I so desperately wanted this movie to relaunch Superman and the potential of a masterpiece was there, but Bryan Singer totally reran the entire plot from Superman The Movie. Everything up to Superman confronting Luthor on the island was great. Instead of making the continent full of kryptonite to ward off Superman, the story should have had Lex creating Doomsday. In the film, Luthor bragged to Lois about having access to Kryptonian weapons when he said "Bring it on" in response to her warning that the nations of the world would rise up against him. Seeing Superman be defeated by Luthor and his goons in what looked like a prison shower rape scene really took me out of what was an enjoyable Superman film up to that point. When Superman arrived, Lex should have faced him in a scene similar to the one we saw in BvS where he gloats about man creating the devil to destroy God as Doomsday is birthed and attacks Superman. You could have had a massive brawl between Superman and Doomsday where Superman gets stabbed by Doomsday's spikes and falls into the ocean and is later rescued by Lois, Richard, and Jason. Superman recharges as he did in the actual film, and relaunches his attack on Doomsday, perhaps with a Kryptonite spear, Luthor made as a backup to Doomsday, that Lois stole from him and gave to Superman. The Kryptonite weakens him, but by sheer will, he runs it through Doomsday's heart killing the monster, and Luthors goons are crushed by falling rocks knocked over during the fighting. Superman then has to lift the continent off the planet with the cause of his weakness being the kryptonite spear and his beating from Doomsday and not the trillions of tons of Kryptonite he's holding over his head he's somehow surviving when a sliver of it in the form of a shank in his ribs nearly killed him. We would have gotten the perfect Superman film where he saves the people of Metropolis during the earthquake and gets to fight his physical match. When he is forced to kill Doomsday, he is killing an abomination of Kryptonian science that is soulless.

Superman Returns is one of those rare over-due sequels that actually worked. It's such an under-rated film, one of my friends practically had to force me to watch it a year after it's release. Superman Returns was a great movie. I like they kept John Williams theme, the special effects were amazing and the story was great and despite being too young for the role Brandon Routh did a job as Superman almost closely resembling Chirs Reeve. The only issues I had with it were Superman having a son, his suit, the fact they used Lex Luthor for a 4th time instead of using another Superman villian but other then that it was great.

I Think this movie had potential, just the wrong kind of story-yes we know lois loved superman. I think the deleted scene where we went to krypton should of been added. I think a new villain should of been added aside from Lex, maybe brainiac(Kal-el brought a fragment or something of brainiac back to earth) bizarro, someone different then Lex. The movie just lacked attention in the story. Think that's why it didn't do to well at the theatre.

Superman was an anti-hero/anti-government in the very early comics. But you're right. He grew out of it as the US grew out of the depression. He's a symbol of hope now. Or was anyway. I hate to see what he's going to turn into under Snyder's hands. He's dying to make a Dark knight movie with Frank Miller's Superman included.
@JSSTyger

You posted this four years ago. Snyder has since destroyed Superman. He made him a brat who acts like being a hero is a chore rather than a responsibility. In the next movie, Justice League, he'll have his black suit and will probably be evil. I wish this Superman was buried 500 feet into bedrock.

@KHMSeries20 Yes of-course, it is set after Supermans 1&2 so ignoring Superman3 lol. I really luv this movie, and I like that (as you say) it keeps in line with Donnor's superman films, something that is rare today for movie remakes and sequels of classic films. Its just ashame that the young mainstream audiences of today dont see it that way. I've always thought what Richard Donnor and the late Christopher Reeves achieved was indeed the ensence of what "Superman" is about ever since the comics.
